Royal astrologist uncovers a rat: Wives of high ranking officials will be stewing in anger ... hopefully no more Pisith Pilika-type case

Cambodian royal astrologer says Year of Rat will bring angry wives

Phnom Penh - Cambodia celebrated its New Year's Eve on Sunday, with the royal palace astrologer predicting a troubled Year of Rat ahead, including poor crops, inflation and angry wives. Like neighbouring Thailand and Laos, Cambodia follows the Chinese horoscope, but celebrates its lunar New Year in April each year.

"This year's agriculture is not good, with half of the vegetable and fruit crop destroyed," royal palace astrologer Im Borin said by telephone.

"There will be many people killing each other, the good and kind will be looked down on by society ... the price of salt will increase, and wives of high ranking officials will be stewing in anger," he predicted.

Cambodia brought in a controversial monogamy law in 2006 which made adultery a criminal offence punishable by 18 months in jail. The law is believed by many have been devised under pressure from powerful and jealous wives of high-ranking officials.

However it has done little to curb the common practice of men who can afford to taking mistresses, or "second wives" and there has only been one successful prosecution so far.

One high ranking male official was even reported as endorsing adultery as a good way of relieving tension and spicing up a marriage in an interview with the English-language Cambodia Daily newspaper soon after the legislation was passed.

Cambodian wives have become internationally notorious for taking out the competition by hiring gunmen or dousing them with acid, making Year of Rat a year of living dangerously for many young Cambodian women if the astrologer is correct.

soothe sayers are good for spiritual well-being, however, these believe can be override by the cynical people because not everybody are believers like this. mental ability are as strong as the human minds allows it to be. it's all in the mind. some changes in attitude can overcome all of these traditional beliefs. just look around the entire world in order to understand this. this kind of believe are very local and specific to certain individual and location of society on earth. however, it can not affect others who do not believe in them. this is why the world have so many cultures and tradition that are very specific to a nation or region. it won't have any power if people don't give it power. all about the mindset tied in with culture and tradition. i mean, it's not always bad, though; actually studies in psychology showed that cultural or traditional beliefs can actually cure mental illnesses in many indigenous cultures around the world. having said this, people should respect others' rights to believe or worship what they want as long as they don't try to impose it onto you, then leave those individuals who do believe in such spiritual healing alone as it is their rights as well as yours not to believe it. this is only fair to say.

i think one's traditional belief is only good gor the well-being of the mind, and it's not really good for development and invention as beliefs are too superstitious and too rigid and too sensitive, etc... so it's a good idea not to mix this kind of mind with anything to do with science and modern development concepts. leave them separate so not to interfere on other people belief or disbelief. this way, there is no problem when we know the boundary not to cross.

study social sciences, they are very interesting. plus, one will understand this very complex concepts of the human beings.

Never believe in anything hastily; what can harm one the most, a believe can do the same. The Buhhda said, "Believe nothing on the faith of tradition, even though they have been held in honour for many generations, and in divers places. Do not believe a thing because many speak of it. Do not believe on the faith of the sages in the past. Do not believe what you have imagined, persuading yourself that a god inspires you. Belive nothing on the
sole authority of your masters or priests. After axamination, believe
what you yourself have tested and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto."
"One should honour only one's own religion and condemn the religions of others, but one should honour others'religions for this or that reason. So doing, one helps one's own religion to grow and render service to the religions of others too. In acting otherwise one digs the grave of one's own religion and also does harm to other religions. Whosoever honours his own religion and condemn others'religions, does so indeed through devotion to his own religion, thinking 'I will glorify my own religion.'"
