SRP Demonstration WILL Take Place in Front of the National Assembly

New information in red

CALLING ALL OUR COMPATRIOTS TO JOIN
THE MASS RALLY ORGANIZED BY SRP MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TO DEMAND THAT THE GOVERNMENT LOWER THE PRICES OF MERCHANDISES
OR PROVIDE SALARY INCREASES FOR CIVIL SERVANTS AND WORKERS COMMENSURATE WITH THE PRICES OF GOODS

THIS MASS RALLY HAS RECEIVED PERMISSION FROM THE INTERIOR MINISTRY

SECURITY AND SAFETY WILL BE ENSURED
BY THE PHNOM PENH MUNICIPALITY AUTHORITIES

(Following a meeting between the Sam Rainsy Party and the Phnom Penh Municipality this morning, Saturday, April 5, 2008)

THE RALLY WILL START ON SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 2008 AT 08:00 A.M.
IN FRONT OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING IN PHNOM PENH

When H.E. Sam Rainsy was the Minister of Economy and Finance between 1993 and 1994, the prices of goods on the market were low and stable. At that time, the price of one liter of gasoline was only 600 riels, and one kilo of rice cost only 600 riels.

In order to reduce the prices of goods on the market right now, the SRP demands that the government adopt the following measures:

1- Lower taxes on gasoline and lower the profit margin made by gasoline distributors.

2- End the commercial monopolies granted to a number of cunning merchants and dishonest companies which allow them to increase the prices of goods as they please because of lack of effective competition.

3- Ensure an adequate economic, financial and monetary policy so as to preserve the stability of the riel.

4- Control the printing of bank notes so as to avoid issuing paper money in an irresponsible and disorderly manner. If the government continues to inflate money supply, the riel will continue to depreciate and inflation will continue to accelerate.

5- Implement land reform by distributing unused state-owned lands to landless farmers or those who do not have enough land to live on, so as to increase agricultural production nationwide. For the tens of thousands of hectares of lands grabbed or stolen from the State or from the people by corrupt government officials and cunning businessmen, they must be returned back to the people so that Cambodian farmers can effectively plant crops needed to counter inflation.

If the prices of goods double, salaries must also be doubled

Well, what is wrong with it?

Non-violent public demonstration is the best choice to uphold democracy and sustain the principles of democracy. Does non-violent public demonstration is useful for Khmer society?

Simple answer is YES:
1. Providing public education in some constructive measurements suggested by demonstrators. In this case, SRP has intellectually proposed with their five solutions for the hike of commodities price ie low taxes of gasoline, halting commercial monopoly by cronies, adequate monetary policy, limit currency printing, and give back unused lands to the farmers.

These five measurements are impregnable for the incorporation of opposition party with the government. It is only for the benefits of Cambodian peoples and their nation. It only helps the government to envision their policy.

2. Political leaders surely require political will to transform themselves from "power-thirsty" to "nation-building". In this manner, non-violent public demonstration is just another effort to exercise genuine democratic principles that is solemnly guaranteed by Cambodian national constitution.

To achieve this principle, government requires political will and scarifying, and opposition party requires courageous and striving as Sam Rainsy has always stood on this vision.

3. Some previous negative causalities of non-violent public demonstrations such as grenade attacks, offending to mass protesters, and the burning down of Thailand embassy are the fault of authority, (not government or CPP because authority must be neutral), importantly authority failed to safeguard, protect, and prevent such causalities.

In sum, there are many ways to help develop our nation, and among those public opinion expression or non-violent demonstration is the cornerstone of genuine, democratic development in Cambodia.

SRP has been aware about this. When mass media and public opinion are colonized and bombarded by the CPP especially the five suggestions of SRP has been niglected by the government leadership, the non-violent public demonstration is inevitable. It is not called political opportunity or political agenda that CPP has always stereotyped to arrest or accuse dissents and demonstrators, it is the potential tool to develop Cambodia nation politically, socially and economically.

i'm glad oppositionis setting up demonstration to demand the gov't to look into controlling commodities' prices in cambodia and to bring attention to gov't to help increase gov't workers' salary as well to meet the cost of living allowances (cola) as nothing is the same like 10 or 20 years ago in cambodia. so it seems only fair for gov't employees to receive increase in their salary as their daily necessities are getting more expensive. this is way to bring the cause to the gov't's attention so hopefully the gov't can help with this problem. thank you and god bless cambodia.

it's called keeping pace with the growing economy as nothing is the same anymore, say like even 5 or 10 years ago. everything is changing like on a daily basis, so it's a good reminder for gov't to do something to help the gov't workers of cambodia. thank you.

Anonymous said...

Yeah but what is their complaint? our salary change is better than what they expected to make up for inflation.

when gov't can help with the increase of salary, it is like an economic stimulus for the country because, even in the western countries like the USA, their gov't is help the economy by passing law to help increase salary such as the recent economic stimulus signed into law by president george w. bush. so this is something gov't of cambodia can do to help the cambodian workers, too as cost of living is increased so increase of salary should be look into serious to help everyone.

even a few dollars increased can help and goes a long way for cambodia to offset higher cost of living. it's called helping cambodia and her people. thank you.

Good job SRP. Finally you got permission.

Anonymous said...

No confusion about the responding from Ministry of Interior. It is gravely wrong to cal it "Permission" to hold demonstration.

No Permission is issued, it is only Incorporation from the Ministry of Interior.

SRP didn't request for permission, they request for Incorporation to protect the non-violent demonstration.

So don't call it PERMISSION, but call it COOPERATION.

Khmer Young said...

According to National Constitution, no Permission is required for non-violent demonstration.

When we think of inflation, we think of rising prices instead of the actual causes of inflation. Since the ultimate outcome of inflation is always a general and sustained increase in price levels. It is thus easy to define inflation in terms of its ultimate results - the price increases that it causes - and ignore the underlying causes of inflation - the underlying forces that caused those results.

And, when people said that policies that hold prices down can be inflationary, this is no minor matter. It leads to the common policy mistakes that arise from the belief that anything that holds prices down is "anti-inflationary" - when the opposite is often actually true.

When allocating blame for inflation, cause must be carefully distinguished from mere effect. Those government policies that increase demand without increasing supply or that restrict supply or decrease productivity, are "inflationary." These government policies must bear all the blame for the rising prices, loss of purchasing power, slow or nonexistent productivity growth, capital flight, stagnant capitalization or recapitalization, stagflation or inflationary depression, and all the other ills that inflation causes.

Cyclical recessions can occur normally in a capitalist system due to the cumulative impact of the natural imperfections of private economic decision makers - although it is not difficult to think of any recession in Cambodia history where government policy mistakes did not play the primary role. However - only governments can cause inflation.

WTF, 2:09? You expect the constitution to spell out everything?

Anonymous said...

Cyclical, my arse, 2:17, stop living in the stupid textbook, will ya? In the real world, when price of good goes up, it rarely come down lower then where is was, except for a couple cases where, For instant, if you move manufacture to a cheaper country, then the price for whatever you manufacture will come done some.

demonstration for good cause i will support, make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

Will there be phallic symbols of the opposition party leader (Sam Rainsy) during the upcoming demonstration?

I believe, if you people are pressing forward with the demomstration, you should , at least, have an accurate representation of the phallus of the retarded gorillas and the leader who leads the demomonstration.

Of course, undoubtedly -- we'll have our riot police officers and equivalent law enforcement personnels poised to rain on your demonstartion in case you misbehaved.

Advice: this is not how to bring about changes in the country.

When H.E. Sam Rainsy was the Minister of Economy and Finance between 1993 and 1994, the prices of goods on the market were low and stable. At that time, the price of one liter of gasoline was only 600 riels, and one kilo of rice cost only 600 riels.

That was 15 years ago and at that time the price of crude oil sold on the New York stock market, Singapore was well less than 60US$/barrel and now it is over 100US$/barrel. Don't expect that the current price of crude oil combined with government good will to low tax and levy will bring down the price to the level of 1993

If this is the fundamental of author to compare the price of everything 15 years ago to current price of goods then author may have to compare that number of casualties during the 1993 election was much higher than current casualties which have been recognized by International community, and the atmosphere of since the election in 1998, human rights Etc.. is much improved also recognized by the US State department

1- Lower taxes on gasoline and lower the profit margin made by gasoline distributors.

Can tell you if the government can reduce tax and levies on import goods the distributors will also pass it on to consummers and they love to see that happen. However, one must bears in mind that the price of gasoline will always be fluctuating due to the cost of crude on the stock market even if the government lower the tax and levies.

If the prices of goods double, salaries must also be doubled

In any democratic world, there is not such a thing that government would allow the salary to increase by two fold.

For example, Australia housing now comparing to the last 3 decades is increased by 400% while the salary for the same period is incrrased to a merely 120%.

Mr. Rainsy is well awared of the living condition in France, the salary bench mark, in particular working hours which has been reduced to 35hrs/week and the paid salary is also less but government there did not agree to double the salary in according to inflation either so please Mr. Rainsy where the hell in the world that fundemental justification or economy equation which can be best fit to "If the prices of goods double, salaries must also be doubled". USA is in trouble at the momment and million plus people have lost and will lost their house because cannot make the morgage repayment and again the USA administration did not double the wages their in accordance to the inflation either.

He got the fundamental justification or economy equation from Planet of the Ape, mate, where else?

Sam Rainsy must be careful. On 30th March 1997, the Interior Ministry gave permission to hold demonstration in front of the National Assembly and 4 grenades were thrown killing 19 and injuring 200 people. Is it a sense of deja vu? Watch out, Rainsy, Hun Sen might organise other grenade attack.

Let see the funny poll

That is not a realistic poll, 8:42. The trouble is, about 70 % of the voter in Cambodia live in the rural don't care about all that stuff and they will certainly to vote for PM who made their land value perpetually goes up and richer years after years.

Accordingly, the CPP will easily win by a land slide.
