Meeting at Psar Thmei in Phnom Penh on Sunday, April 6, 2008
The sharp increase in the prices of goods in Cambodia is due to corruption and incompetence on the part of the government.
When Sam Rainsy was Minister of Economy and Finance between 1993 and 1994, the prices of goods on the market were low and stable. At that time, the price of one liter of gasoline was only 600 riels [now 4,800 riels], and similarly one kilo of rice cost only 600 riels [now between 3,000 riels and 4,000 riels].
In order to reduce the prices of goods on the market right now, the SRP demands that the government adopt the following measures:

In order to reduce the prices of goods on the market right now, the SRP demands that the government adopt the following measures:
1- Lower taxes on gasoline and lower the profit margin made by gasoline distributors.
2- End the commercial monopolies granted to a number of cunning merchants and dishonest companies which allow them to increase the prices of goods and services as they please because of the lack of effective competition.
3- Ensure an adequate economic, financial and monetary policy so as to stabilise the riel.
4- Control the printing of bank notes so as to avoid issuing paper money in an irresponsible and disorderly manner. If the government continues to inflate the money supply, the riel will continue to depreciate and inflation will continue to accelerate.
5- Implement land reform by distributing unused state-owned lands to landless farmers or those who do not have enough land to live on, so as to increase agricultural production nationwide. For the tens of thousands of hectares of lands grabbed or stolen from the State or from the people by corrupt government officials and cunning businessmen, they must be returned back to the people so that Cambodian farmers can effectively plant crops needed to counter inflation.
If the prices of goods double, salaries must also be doubled

Sounds like a good advice for gorillas in Long Beach.
Go for it!
To 7:22 PM,
Hey, where are you, man? And What do you do for a living, a decent living? If you are Khmer, and have been living in Cambodia, you must have known what has happened to Cambodian people, your family and friends politically and economically, especailly during such a crisis of food supply and espeically for the poor and powerless. The fact that you always show no respect for and no sympathy toward the hardship and misery of poor people due to various economic and political problems in the country proves that you must have benefited from these situations and thus tired every means possible everywhere you can have your hands on and your nose in to simply further enrich you and your cligue.
You'll have your day, man! god knows and watch your action all the time!
This leaflet is plainly asinine. This is just like Hillary Clinton pointing to her 'experience'. Sam Rainsy has virtually no experience save for his brief tenure and he was greatly assisted by French bureaucrats without whom he would have been completely lost. I was there. I know. Comparing prices and living conditions of 1993/4 to today is talking apples and oranges. Only fools and demagogues argue like this. Like prices in Europe or the U. S. are still the same. Gasoline in the U. S. was 83 cents a gallon in 1996, it is $3.5 a gallon now. Rice from Asia has tripled. Shame on the SRP and Sam Rainsy.
To 10:13PM,
But, why are you ignoring the fact that the price of gasoline is more costly in Cmbodian than in the States? And I believe you may know just why. Monopoly, collusion, corruption, nepotism, clannism, are all dictate the price, and of course power, control in Cambodian gov't. Get it?
Actually, the high price of gas in Cambodia in comparison to the US is due to the US refine their oil, and we didn't.
Hey Viet troller/pimp/parasite/plunderer @7:22PM,
You Viet troller/intruder admitted yourself to be a Viet-born and national here on KI-Media.
You Viet troller/intruder has been dumping tons of trashes here on KI-Media over God knows how long.
You Viet troller/intruder pretends to be Cambodian/Khmer speaking up for Cambodian/Khmer and giving Cambodian/Khmer a bad name.
You Viet troller/intruder trashes everybody here on KI-Media calling Cambodian/Khmer all sort of names to boast, to sabotage and to destroy Cambodian/Khmer for the benefit of you Viet intruder/plunderer....
Now, you Viet trash/troller/intruder @7:22PM calls that a debate?
Does history and now a live example of you Viet trash/troller here on KI-Media tell Cambodian/Khmer anything about the Viet's trustworthiness?
Cambodian/Khmer and the whole world know the true colors of you Viet troller/intruder/invader/plunderer full well already.
In plain and simple English, now, and again what part of you "getting the fuck out of KI-Media" don't you freaking Viet troller/intruder/pimp/plunderer understand huh?
10:40
12:08 stated one reason, another one is bulk contracts. The U. S. buys more than any other nation, including China.
Have you ever checked the prices in Europe. Don't be so ignorant. Rising costs and prices are a world-wide problem. It is simply wrong for the SRP to blame it on incompetence and corruption. There is plenty of those to go around but not in this regard.
But, then how come the gasoine price is cheaper in Vietnam. And do you think Sokimex has a better deal with Vietnam for the gasoline imports into Cambodia, and also on the same token Hun Sen gov't has a great deal with Sokimex the gasoline pricing and supply in Cambodia? Too naive, 12:08 & 1:04AM.
Yes, VN has somewhat less costly gasoline price than Cambodia. Sokhimex benefits both Sok Kong and Hun Sen gang at the expense of ordinary Cambodian citizens.
That's right, 2:02AM. Every can see that.
2:02 Vietnam also refined their oil to reduce the price. Plus, VN government used to subsidize the gas price, but they will stop soon.
Sok Kong just a director for Vitnamese goverment copany to collect due from As stupid PHD have no education!
Know you see what he (A lup Kwack Hun Xen) need to pay for get PHD with no education!
Who care about shit like that? We are only concern with growth, development, and jobs creation.
1- Lower taxes on gasoline and lower the profit margin made by gasoline distributors.
Can tell you if the government can reduce tax and levies on import goods the distributors will also pass it on to consummers and they love to see that happen. However, one must bears in mind that the price of gasoline will always be fluctuating due to the cost of crude on the stock market even if the government lower the tax and levies.
If the prices of goods double, salaries must also be doubled
In any democratic world, there is not such a thing that government would allow the salary to increase by two fold.
For example, Australia housing now comparing to the last 3 decades is increased by 400% while the salary for the same period is incrrased to a merely 120%.
Good point, mate (5:10)!
Any argument?
