August Great and Valorous King Sihanouk also played sports and succeeded in popularising them across the country when he was head of state. The sports he played were mainly football, volley ball and basket ball. Volley ball was the most popular and there were many volley ball grounds throughout the country. It was cheap, just a small plot of land, 2 posts, a net, and of course a volley ball. In those days, Cambodian volley ball team (sponsored by the National Bank of Cambodia) was among the strongest in Southeast Asia.
Now our Prime Minister Hun Sen is playing golf, a sport for the rich and powerful. How many Cambodians can afford to play such a sport? Golf courses are costly. Membership to any golf club is costly. Golf playing gears are costly. And golf players need to have proper clothes and shoes!
