The number of foreign spouses in Korea has topped 116,000, the Ministry of Justice said in a report Monday, and if those who took Korean citizenship are added, the number jumps to 160,000.
The ministry released the report one day before May 20, or ``Together Day.’’ Enacted in May 2007, the ``Basic Law on Treatment of Foreigners Residing in Korea’’ designated that date as the day for foreigners.
The report showed the number of foreign nationals married to Koreans doubled to 116,475 over the past three years from 57,069 in 2004. Almost 90 percent of them were female.
Among these, 96 percent were Asians. Two percent were from North America and 1.5 percent came from Europe. The number of spouses of other nationalities stood at 124, including Tajikistan, Moldova, Latvia and Mauritius among others.
``Korea needs to work for a multi-cultural environment that understands and respects other cultures,'' said Won Hyung-gyu, head of Seoul Immigration Office. ``We can further develop our country by integrating all foreign nationals into society.’’
By county, Chinese formed the biggest group of foreign spouses with 66,115 or 57 percent, followed by Cambodia with 25,640 and Vietnam with 23,301. Filipinos and Japanese numbered 5,306 and 5,711, respectively.
Some 86 percent of them have lived in Korea less than four years and more than 30 percent of them lived in Gyeonggi Province including Incheon. Seoul has about 25 percent of the foreign spouses, South Gyeongsang Province including Busan has 12 percent, while 10 percent of them live in Jeolla Province including Gwangju.
