Cambodia to demarcate border with Thailand

Cambodia is to install more markers along the Thai border in a bid to more clearly demarcate the state line, Var Kim Hong, chief of the National Border Committee said Saturday.

“We have to install more border poles because the 73 [colonial-era] markers installed by France are inadequate,” Var Kim Hong told The Mekong Times at the “Smile of Angkor” art exhibition.

Calling the demarcation “our duty,” Va Kim Hong said Cambodia should emulate Malaysia which has planted over 10,000 markers along its border with Thailand. It is “not clear” when work will begin or how many markers will be needed, he added.

“We are examining markers planted by the French in Pailin and we hope to finish this task soon,” Var Kim Hong said.

Cambodia has an 805 km land border with Thailand but 73 markers between Cham Sro Gnam pass in from Oddar Meanchey province and Cham Yeam in Koh Kong province, planted by the French in the early 20th century, are the only official demarcation. Between Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provice there are no markers at all so quarrels are common.

To reduce such disputes, Cambodia and Thailand created a bilateral committee to demarcate the border in 2006.

Va Kimhong said that the scheme “relies on whether we agree or not.”

Son Chhay, chief of the Foreign Affairs committee of the National Assembly, opined that the demarcation of the border with Thailand “may be easier than Vietnam because border markers from the French colonial times still remain.”

The opposition Sam Rainsy Party parliamentarian urged the government to “do the task with reference to maps, not by running a straight line from one marker to another.”

Throughout its history, Cambodia has been plagued by border disputes with neighboring countries.

Negotiations with Vietnam, Thailand and Laos over border demarcations are ongoing.

It is nice to have the border markers concept but there is a better concept than a border marker concept and I recommend build the fucken wall like the one located between North Korea and South Korea called the "DMZ"! I recommend digging over 10,000 trenches and install over 10,000 border guard posts and equip with machine guns and rocket launchers ready to retaliate if the fucken Thaicong want to start shit!

It is time to end all economic dependency on the fucken Thaicong and Cambodian people are better off using the sea to access to the outside world!

By the way the number one trade routes are by sea and by air and not by land! I certainly don't recommend eliminating the land route but use it only with the nations that can accommodate Cambodian interest!

Cambodia is definitely ready for the DMZ style like the one located between South Korea and North Korea!

God bless Cambodia!

Are the 73 "markers inadequate" or lost? We must be clear about that.

The border demarkation is Siamese problem, and I beleive THAT up to 50% are lost because of Siamese embitious, they have removed, there is no trace of its especielly in these two Provinces (Bantey M., Oddor M..)near poipet and Prasat tameun the pole markers used to be there through the Khmer Rouge regime then later after it was behind Prasat ta-meun toward Siameseland now Siamese is possibly displace or distroyed its all, what kind of neibuorgh is it?. As we know Siamese is actively hampered uor Country to registering Prasat Preah Vihea into UNESCO world Heritage, Siam is intentionally to eradicated the old border Markers, and further more they try to foolishing International opinions on the area 4.6Km2 around Prasat Preah Vihea, and the border eloguently. This act Siamese won't have any intention showing PEACE with Khmer, their ravenous embition is quarrelly presented. GO HOME AH THEIVES SIAMESE !..
