Motorcycle taxi driver Sem Somanthorn urged Cambodians to stop voting for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party if the anti-corruption law cannot be passed.
About 100 Cambodians, from motorcycle taxi and tuk-tuk drivers, vendors and politicians, met in a public forum Friday, urging the end of graft and the passage of anti-corruption legislation.

Representatives from Funcinpec, Norodom Ranariddh Party and Human Rights parties joined drivers, vendors and others in a forum sponsored by the Cambodian Center for Human Rights.

“Sellers always suffer, because bad officials confiscate their goods and demand their money,” complained Von Pov, president of the Independent Democracy of Informal Economy Association.

Motorcycle taxi driver Sem Somanthorn urged Cambodians to stop voting for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party if the anti-corruption law cannot be passed.

“If your political party wins the election, will it make an anti-corruption law?” driver Kim Sophan asked the party representatives. “And if you were to be prime minister, would you dare to step down if the anti-corruption law could not be done?”

Funcinpec parliamentarian Khieu San told those gathered at the forum that even though Cambodia does not have an anti-corruption law, Cambodian law can still punish those who commit corruption, and many such people have already been imprisoned.

The Coalition of Civil Society Against Corruption said Friday more than one million Cambodians have signed a petition to push for the approval of the anti-corruption law.

Justice Minister Ang Vong Wathana could not be reached for comment Friday.

CPP lawmaker Cheam Yiep said Friday Prime Minister Hun Sen has often pushed for the passage of the law. The CPP is able to safeguard people throughout the country and bring economic development, he added.

A disease that starts from the head is very hard to be cured. To eliminate corruption in Cambodia means to eliminate Hun Xen and his clique because the core of corruption starts from Hun Xen and his whole families, Sok An, Cham Praseth, and Hok Lundy, etc.

It is good that there was such a forum allowed ordinary citizens to voice their concerns, questioned politicians from other parties.

If any one could remember during the 2003 electoral campaign, where most people such as vendors [at olympic market], moto-taxi, students were rally behind the SRP. However, when it came to the crunch - on the date of election, such a rally was disappeared on the ballots.

What was wrong?

People are always often listen to their heart and not their head.

Well, if you are looking for perfection, it going to take a long long time to get it right.

At any rate, the laws is not going to help much when the country is poor and people are constantly tempting with Hollywood lifestyle.

Just look at Vietnam and Laos, they even got capital punishment against corruption and it didn't do them that much good; thus how much can we expected the stupid Anti-Corruption law to do for us. This is all bullshit, but politic bashing.

Only gods can attain perfection; ordinary people cannot. If ordinary can attain perfection, there will be more to be worshiped. Actually, what we need is to punish the corrupted in accordance with the laws of the land, but how can we do it if the corrupted
are always above the laws?

everyone has to have inquisitive mind! what is holding up the anti-corruption law from passing? what is the hold up about it? i always say if people didn't do anything wrong, then why are they being afraid of doing the right thing? think about it, they're only hurting cambodia and her people.

to 06:26am.you are wrong completely.i live close to the border of vn and i know that very well.because of their laws, the people of vn have developed soo much, they are happy, don't worry about steelings ,corruptions etc.we have a motorcycle,we are worry about the life's safty because some polises involve with thieves.they don't look after the the people.some are really corrupted.so we need that law badly.

What you mean I am wrong? Both Laos and Vietnam are corrupted also. Vietnam is a little better than Laos because they are a little richer. What we really needed is jobs to reduce corruption. No law will work under poverty and temptation condition.

Yes, the SRP has evaded taxes for many years now. I wont be surprised that they owed millions to the government that can be used to giver all civil servant a healthy salary raised.
