Hun Sen Defends Rice Cartel

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday defended the proposed creation of a Southeast Asian rice cartel that he said could help ensure supplies and stabilize prices of the staple grain.

Dwindling supplies and rising costs of rice have hit many countries across the region in recent months, but leaders in some countries do not support the idea of Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam joining together to control rice supplies.

Hun Sen said Monday an organization of the rice exporting countries should not cause alarm.

Such a grouping could “ensure rice security,” he said.

The OPEC countries join together to set up price and to protect limited oil supply. All of these countries are very rich now. Now is our turn the ASEAN (except Phillipines & Indonesia)to protect the price and continuous supply of rice to the world. If we are getting rich in so doing, that is ok. There are billions of people out there that are addicted rice as to oil. Cambodia can double rice yield and export from the present 2.5 miiliodns ton since our yield per hectare is only half of Thailand.I hope our farmer will be rich not the middle men.

Well, middle men don't worked for free.
