Hun Sen wants to condition the members of the upcoming Cambodian government with a new measure: the end of all service cars (for VIPs).
Hun Sen made this announce to “all ministers, secretaries of state, and under secretaries of state” during the yearly meeting for the reforms on public finance administration. “If this does not please you, resign now!” Hun Sen warned them before explaining that money is becoming tight and that it preferable to dedicate (the budget allocated to service cars) to priority actions, such as the construction of new infrastructures (roads, schools, health centers…).
Hun Sen also referred to the IRI survey which showed that the majority of Cambodians welcome the country’s efforts in this direction.
Pragmatic, he advised the high-ranking officials to use their own vehicles.
Keat Chhon, the minister of Economy, declared that he supports Hun Sen’s initiative and he promised to put this order into application.
Hun Sen reminded that during the first legislative mandate in 1993, not only did the government buy cars for its high ranking officials, but the MPs benefited from tax exemption on two imported vehicles. This favor was revoked at the end of the second mandate.
Hun Sen indicated that from now on, there will no longer be tax exemption.
