Original report from Phnom Penh
16 May 2008
King Norodom Sihamoni called for Cambodian unity to help develop the country, saying too that people living in the capital play a crucial role.
Speaking at the inauguration of a statue to honor Grandmother Penh, on whose legend the name of the capital rides, King Sihamoni said national unity, helped by citizens of Phnom Penh, was the key to raising Cambodia out of poverty.
The statue, he said, was a testament to the capital.
Phnom Penh was established as the capital of Cambodia relatively recently, but it has been central to the country’s economy and politics for nearly 600 years. It was established along with five pagodas after 1422, when King Ponhea Yat abandoned Angkor to the jungle.
Many tourists these days opt out of seeing Phnom Penh altogether, focusing instead on the rediscovered ancient capital and the temples of Angkor.
Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema told VOA Khmer Friday he hoped the statue would help tourists reconsider.
Meanwhile, Meach Ponn, an advisor for the Institute of Buddhism, said the municipality should research the stories of other Khmer heroes, such as Achar Sva and Krala Homkong, to build more statues in the name of Cambodia.

Agreed on HR's calling for the national unity which in turn will also strengthen the national moral, territory and sovereignty.
Tourist flock to the ancient capital - Angkor, is simply because the direct flight from any all those destinations. If Phnom Penh shall be the international gateway, then people would have briefly stop in Phnom Penh for a while before proceeding to Siem Reap.
The downside of direct flight to Siem Reap is the incoming tourist don't have to land in the capital of Phnom Penh, and the bright side of this [direct flight] will definitely attract more tourist to the already booming tourism Siem Reap.
Gentleman
It is good to see our king has called for UNITY of Cambodia. But on what platforms does UNITY is based on???. Has our constitution, of which was agreed to by international communities in 1991, been implemented by our government???.only partial, WHY???
Our citizens, poor sufferers have long been at loss, but growing more of cronism. It demonstrates that ABUSES of cambodian rights( rights to live sensibly) has not existed. Social groups of common concerns have expressed that.
Our ancestors have tried many generations for better prospect of Cambodia.
It is the time for our KING to see the pain and sufferring of our nation, rather than promote cronism.
I humbly pledge our king to FULLY undertake social roles prescribed by nation constitution, and work with social groups nationally and internationally, to really set on UNITY. Otherwise the called UNITY becomes meaningless, but providing opportunity to ABUSERS again and again.
Long live poor cambodians, and CAMBODIA!!!.

Unlike King Sihanouk, King Sihamoni has kept out of politics and has concetrated on being a constitutional monarchy. I think we should judge him on that. As a constitutional king, his hands are tight on many issues affecting the nation, especially when the PM does not allow him to fulfil all his constitutional rights and constitutional powers. His inability to do certain things stemmed from constitutional constraints and the PM who does not want the king to do things without asking his permission. I think he has earned respect from many quarters of political persuasions, except from the republicans.
commenting on the 1st poster.
Its very easy for you open your filty mouth. Put you ass in his shoe. Then, maybe have the nerves to speak.

It is not Phnom Penh the tourists do not want to see; it's the dirtiness, the cluttered sidewalk and the dangerous crosswalks. Actually Phnom Penh has a lot of potential to draw toursts but it's the lack of vision to do it. It's like they had never other cities beside the dirty PP.
And he got PHD IN FAGGING...Gay Ass the TINGMONG king
Simplement p.d!
i supported the king's call.
please do not curse the King. He represent the nation. If you look down on him, it means you look down on our nation as a whole. Cambodia is a Kingdom, not a republic that some are dreaming of.
