The statue of Lady Penh – who was at the origin of the city of Phnom Penh – was inaugurated on Friday 16 May in the capital. King Sihamoni, Heng Samrin, the president of the National Assembly, Kep Chuktema, the city governor, were all present during the official ceremony. Students, civil servants also participated in the event. Altogether, about 2,000 gathered for the event.

The sanctuary in honor of the founder of the capital was under construction since 2006. It was built to the south of the Wat Phnom hill, the location of the former residence of Lady Penh. The project was led by a team of architects from the royal palace. Made out of copper, the statue measures 2.7-meter high.

“It will allow us to show to the new generation the history of this hero from our past,” Kep Chuktema said during the ceremony.

King Sihamoni who personally contributed $8,000 to the funding of the project, stressed that he rejoiced about the city development. “This statue embellished the capital. It brings value to the Khmer culture,” the king said.

This monument is the third one inaugurated this year, following those of Chuon Nat and Poet Kram Ngoy. These statues were built in order to showcase the country’s past.
