SRP: Standing Up For Our Workers, Together We Can Bring Change

Source: SRP

STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE 122ND
ANNIVERSARY OF INTERNATIONAL LABOR DAY

STANDING UP FOR OUR WORKERS
TOGETHER WE CAN BRING CHANGE

Cambodian workers are working harder than ever but eating less than before. Cambodian workers are saving harder than ever to support and bring their families out of poverty but their families are falling further behind in debt. Prices for everything, from gasoline to groceries are skyrocketing, health care is expensive and landlords continue to ruthlessly raise rental rates. It is these workers that have contributed to our growing but are direct victims of corruption and a poorly managed economy. It is insulting to reward the workers' hard efforts and sacrifice by a paltry and clearly insufficient raise of US$6 a month.

THIS IS WHY SRP IS STANDING UP WITH THE WORKERS AND THEIR UNIONS TO DEMAND THAT THEIR RIGHTS BE RESPECTED AND THAT THEY BE GIVEN A DECENT AND FAIR MONTHLY WAGE TO ENABLE THEM TO LIVE WITH DIGNITY. IN ADDITION WE DEMAND THAT THE GOVERNMENT ENSURE THAT EMPLOYERS MEET MINIMAL INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS, SAFE AND FAIR WORKING CONDITIONS AND FREE HEALTH CARE FOR THE WORKERS THAT DRIVE CAMBODIA'S ECONOMY.

On this occasion of the 122nd anniversary of international Labor Day, SRP reiterates its stance on economic and social justice and demands the end to the exploitation of our workers and full protection of their rights and freedoms as enshrined in the constitution and the Labor Law.

Cambodian workers deserve better! Cambodian workers should not continue to struggle for what they have earned through their own hard work and initiatives. The government must understand that in an economy such as Cambodia where natural resources are badly managed it is these workers that drive our economy. It is the government that has failed the workers by not implementing appropriate policies to manage inflation levels and address the high cost of living.

SRP proposes the following solutions to address the pressing needs of our workers:
  • a new Labor Law that includes a minimum monthly wage of US$75;
  • reduction of the price of gasoline by reducing the tax on the sale of gasoline;
  • free health care;
  • full protection of workers rights, including the right to strike and the end to the use of force by police;
  • full implementation of the labor law;
  • creation of a Labor Court.
Economic growth can not be sustained without the lack of political will to end corruption. Real economic growth can not occur if our workers are exploited and devalued. This will only lead to an economy where the exploiters benefit, not the society as a whole. If we as a nation are to prosper and reap the benefits of economic growth we need to reduce the great divide between rich and poor and ensure equality for all our citizens in line with the principles of democracy and good governance - principles already practiced by many of our neighboring countries. In this way Cambodia will gain global respect and recognition and attract good investors and develop a stable and sustainable economy.

Thus we come together on this fortuitous day – Labour Day – and remind our workers that they have a voice to bring about change to the current crisis in their lives. On Election Day 27 July, 2008 that voice will be heard again and signal that change is needed and inevitably change must come.

It is true. Together We Can Bring Change. We can change them, him, her and you but not Rainsy. Rainsy is always Rainsy. You can not change Rainsy.

not to mention that before forming the Human Rights Party, Kem Sokha met with San Rainsy in Son Soubert's house. Kem Sokha at that time requested the meeting as the last hope for forming an alliance. At that meeting Kem Sokha's conditions was that Sam Rainsy restructure the ever more autocratic internal party structure and addressing the internal fracture within the SRP. Close observers knew all along of the disgruntle steering committee members--about half of the SRP's steering committee members have never made a single decision. and about half was not happy. Lots left the party without speaking out to avoid further fracture. At some points, the steering committee made decisions to only be overturned by the socall "permanent committee" which according to the internal rule of the SRP has the power to make or overturn any decision; and it is the president who have all the final say. *Please check the members of this "permanent committee"--it consists of the Eng's clan and the Sam's clan--husbands and wives and in laws(one example of this is the nomination of Mr. Ket Key to the deputy president position in the National Authority on Land Conflicts which was overturned by Sam Rainsy and his wife within the "Permanent Committee" to hand the position to Eng Chhay Eang instead. The position is lucrative and Eng Chhay Eang was silence within this position for more than 2 years until recently. Other examples include the nomination of two people to the National Election committee, etc.

Had Sam Rainsy made effort to unite, it would have been a lot easier than. He only need to reform the steering committee and make the steering committee a true assembly with certain ability for overview. One of the other main ideas was to limited the maximum number of the steering committee to avoid power struggle and dilution. Unfortunately Sam Rainsy did not accepted. Worst, there was a promise to not speak to anyone outside of the few people who attended the meeting--less than one month after the meeting, Mr. Sam Rainsy himself gave interview to Rasmey Kampuchea, a CPP's paper, all the detail. So doing prevent future meeting as no one trust Sam Rainsy anymore. Sam Rainsy wanted to destroyed other people involved so they lose the funding and showed that he made efforts to unite but in reality all he did was criticising Kem Sokha in the whole meeting. Unfortunate!!!

Khmer democratic parties will not have a unity. It should happen long time ago. And it cannot happen now.

A few days after the coup, the western gave a big support and idea for the 3 main democratic parties to form a UCD (United Cambodian Democracies). They asked Kem Sokha to be a middle person. Son San accepted it. Ranaridh was OK with it. But Rainsy refused. He said the same thing as now "His party will win. His party does not need anyone else". If they united at that time, they would already win the CPP.

After seeing Rainsy's attitude, Son San's team later joined FUNCINPEC.

After staying with FUNCINPEC for awhile Kem Sohka saw no hope that FUNCINPEC would go up but to come down. He then secretly talked to Rainsy to bring about half of FUNCINPEC's team to join Rainsy. But Rainsy refused again.

Later on Kem Sokha throw a Human Rights group organization to gain his own popularity. Seeing and fearing of popularity of Kem Sokha, Rainsy and his wife then secretly met Kem Sokha and offered him a Vice President at Sam Rainsy Party. But it was Kem Sokha's turn to refuse.

Later in 2006 one of the western countries tried to put these two men at a round table in Phnom Penh and asked them to work together. But Rainsy refused again. He said "His tree has grown strong roots. His ship is going toward the goal. His party is OK. He does not need anyone."

Again in 2007 after Kem Sokha launched the Human Rights Party, a group of western countries tried to put them together. They arranged for both of them to meet in Switzeland. Kem Sokha and Son Sobert showed up, but Rainsy did not. Rainsy and his wife went to Paris instead.

I think it was the final attempt of the western to help these two groups to unite. And I think they will never be together. In their heart they become the enemy now.

They both are now trying so hard to gain votes and seats in order to be a partner with CPP to run the government. But they are wrong again. FUNCINPEC will win a few seats (2 or 3 at least) that will add up to 50+1 with CPP. Then they are still a strong partner for government.

It is too late for Kem Sokha, Rainsy or anyone to call for the unification.

Ah Sam Rainy is a bullshit artist. He's no democrat. He's a dictator with no plan to run Cambodia. Therefore, just vote CPP and say "NO" to Ah Sam Rainsy and his clan and cronies.

The statement is brilliantly thought and done to attract more supports for the up-coming election, however thre are many questions to be asked.

Cambodian workers are working harder than ever but eating less than before.

From the workers point of view, the price of food are on the increased day by day. From the vendors point of view, they wil have something in common with the workers - "High cost of material used in cooking, grocery, meats and fish Ect" and therefore they will have to pass on to consumer. Believed that SR himself will not say "This is the sole practice in Cambodia and not anywhere in the world".

May be it is time that our workers shall learn how to budget and do home cooking instead of buying ready cooked food selling at the factory gate.

Cambodian workers are saving harder than ever to support and bring their families out of poverty but their families are falling further behind in debt.

Yes do agree with that but there are 2 kinds of debt we are talking about.

1] is the debt for the better use in order to support the family.

2] the self and uncontrolled debts which occurred purely because of self indulgent, thing I have to have Ect.

Prices for everything, from gasoline to groceries are skyrocketing,

Inflation is in every corner of the globe but it is a matter that it is low or high. Gasoline price is fluctuate every single minute of the day at the New York stock exchange and any stock exchange around the globe. Something that government shall look into reduce the import taxes and excise and the stations shall pass on the consumer it lower price as possible.

health care is expensive.

Health care in Cambodia is always expensive dating back to the Sangkum Reastr Niyum.

and landlords continue to ruthlessly raise rental rates.

As many people come to city in search for job and hope to make big bucks then the demand of rental properties available are also short and therefore the landlord will not hesitate to hike the rent at all. Don't think anyone or government can provide cheap accommodation for everyone.

It is these workers that have contributed to our growing but are direct victims of corruption and a poorly managed economy.

No doubt that workers are contributing to our growing economy however corruption is not something new or just happens during this era.

If asking "our ordinary citizen" to honestly answer this question"

"if they have ever bribed anyone purely because they wanted to have their way?

Don't think many people wanted to anser that but rather answer that "Yes I have bribed because a particular person asked for it".

It is insulting to reward the workers' hard efforts and sacrifice by a paltry and clearly insufficient raise of US$6 a month.

US6/month pay increase is not much, however in percentage is equavlent to 12% pay rise based on US50/month]. SR himself also aware that ordinary workers in France pay rise has never been 12% in any calendar year but might spread over 2 to 3years.

THIS IS WHY SRP IS STANDING UP WITH THE WORKERS AND THEIR UNIONS TO DEMAND THAT THEIR RIGHTS BE RESPECTED AND THAT THEY BE GIVEN A DECENT AND FAIR MONTHLY WAGE TO ENABLE THEM TO LIVE WITH DIGNITY.

Can't see that Unions are supporting SRP or SRP are supporting Unions at all. If one can remeber during the last demonstration last month about inflation, the Unions did not ask their members to show up in amss and support the demonstration citing that SRP did not coordinate the issue with them.

LESS AND LESS KHMER PEOPLE NOW SUPPORT SAM RAINSY. Go to Cambodian and see it yourself.

There is no doubt that SRP is loosing grounds in a number of places to HRP. They do not enjoy supports they had before commune elections in 2007 anymore, at least from the places we supported in Kampong Cham, in BTB, in Takeo and in PNH.

Our message to SRP oversea supporters to audit your financial suuports received by SRP elites. As activits on the grounds no oversea financial supports are being used as intended. We are operating on our own funds for the benefits of a few elites based in Phnom Penh and abroad.

We, in Cambodia, loose faith with SRP leadership for many reasons. They are ineffective in making the case. They have been in opposition for more than a decade and they will be theoppositin again if they are so arrogant as today. They spent our time, resources even lives too much for nothing. They still fighting internally to sideline the minority as they want to run the group for life. They never treat the diffirences as assets. No point to support them any more.

Yes, I agree with that.

People learn about SRP's internal problem. People learn about Rainsy's attitude and how he treated his team. People are tired to listen to the same stories again and again.

If you go to a village that used to have 1000 people or more, for example, came to support and listened to him, now about 100 to 150 only came to support him.

Talking about USA, his main resource (money) and supported people are in Stockton, California. Last week he came to Stockton. Less than 100 people came to his banquet. In the past he could draw 400 to 500 people.
