Noppadon Patama (L) and Sok An (3rd from L)BANGKOK, May 24 (TNA) -- Cambodia has agreed to register only the ancient Preah Vihear temple ruins themselves as a UNESCO World Heritage site, leaving the surrounding area disputed by Thailand and Cambodia unresolved, and to prepare a new map showing the ruins for consideration by UNESCO and Thailand, Thai Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama said Saturday.
Mr. Noppadon, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officials met in Paris for 10 hours on Thursday. The Thai foreign minister told a press conference that the meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere.
The Cambodian government agreed to limit its registration of the Preah Vihear temple only as a World Heritage site, and would submit new map of temple premises to the Thai government and UNESCO for consideration on June 6.
Thailand supports Cambodia in registering the ancient temple ruins as a World Heritage site, Mr. Noppadon said, indicating that he would forward the outcome of the meeting to Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and related government agencies as soon as possible .

It made me laugh when I read comments by Srisakra Vallibhotama, a Thai archaeologist from Silpakorn University. I was wondering what kind of education he had when he was studying archeology that gave him such an imaginary interpretation of the sacredness of Preah Vihear Temple. I doubt also if his understanding of the sacredness of religious monuments in general, as reflected through his comments, just illustrates a kind of stupid and crabby academic tradition at Silpakorn University, where his department of archeology is based. Or he said that just because he wanted to present himself to the world in such a way that he should be known as a great joker, but not as an archaeologist? If he wished to do so, with his comments in Bangkok post, published on 22 May 2008, I think he had done a good job.
Srisakra Vallibhotama, the world's greatest joker, said "Preah Vihear belongs to neither Cambodia nor Thailand - it belongs to sacred powers. It has been a holy place for pilgrimage." He added, "Watershed lines were traditionally considered by ancient people as no man's land, belonging to no one. Crossing the areas required the performing of rituals." He also said, "The troublemaker was France, as they introduced the concept of borders".
Everyone knows that Preah Vihear was built by a great Khmer King Yasovarman who had also built some other temples including Phnom Bakheng with significant cosmological landscape. It was no accident that HM King Yasovarman had chosen Preah Vihear and Bakheng mountains to be the sites where the sacred temples to be built. There has been archeological evident indicating that HM King Yasovarman proclaimed himself to be devaraja (divine king) whose divine power was legitimated through devaraja cult. Michael D. Coe, a professor of anthropology, at Yale University, with his PhD. in anthropology from Harvard University, said, "The priest-king of the Khmer Empire was the intermediary between his royal ancestors and his realm. The royal cult centered on his devaraja, a stone lingam housed in a great temple-mausoleum which on his death became a temple dedicated to the worship of one who was now God-King. He added, "Some of the most important Khmer monuments were thus not palaces or even temples in the ordinary sense of the word, but rather what Coedes calls "funerary temples".
Actually, Michael made a valid point when he pointed to the legitimacy of the divine king who politically, religiously, and ethnocentrically acted as the intermediary between his royal ancestors and his realm. In this respect, devaraja cult which was the source of his supreme power, his ultimcy and his permanency before Lord Shiva, symbolized the supreme, ultimate and permanent kinship between the King and his ancestors, his successors, and his people respectively. Some scholars argue that devaraja cult represented Khmer's unity and solidarity. It was true; devaraja even represented the sacred kinship and solidarity, which was not subject to temporariness, but to ever-lasting bonding blessed with sacred power from Shiva, the Lord who had killed Yama, the Lord of Death. One century later, his successor HM. King Udayaditiyavarman wrote in an inscription found in Nokoreach(currently in central Thailand), "“If I will be rewarded for my meritorious acts, I wish to be reborn in Kampuja". Obviously, through the inscription, the King expressed his nationalist sentiment towards the Khmer. There is no doubt, the divine power of the King remained the symbol of permanent connection between past and present which bore the ultimacy and permanency of Khmerness, which would never been eroded in time and space. With no exception, Bakheng and Preah Vihear bear witnesses to the Khmer glorious civilization, marked by Khmer’s ability to communicate with Lord Shiva. With their perfect cosmological landscapes, Bakheng and Preah Vihear as the pillars of devaraja cult were the gates through which sacredness was brought to Khmer transforming this race into the sacred one. Those who failed to communicate with the Lord were treated as barbarians. There was no way for Bakheng and Preah Vihea to be dedicated to such barbarous race. According to the Rig Veda, although barbarians were not directly mentioned, in principle, the barbarians’ status was even lower than Shudras who sprang from the feet of Manu, the primordial man. Consequently, by principle, they did not get lighted with knowledge and wisdom from the Lord. Their minds were polluted with illusion and greed, the sin, thus they were banned from entering the sacred place. People who dream a lot during the day time like our great joker Srisakra Vallibhotama, whose mind and body are polluted with maya illusion and greediness should also be banned from entering the sacred place.
To the main point, Preah Vihear, as a pillar of devara, representing connection between god, human beings, and nature, had been a holy pace connected to the Khmer political, religious, genealogical and ethnocentric backbone of the Khmer, whose sovereignty was represented by the divine king known as devaraja or the Lord of Universe. Preah Vihea could be a holy place for pilgrimage. However, not every one was allowed to enter the premise of Preah Vihear Temple for it is only for khmer whose genealogy, through devaraja, was connected to the race which bow before the Lord. For that reason religion came to have racial meaning. Preah Viear and Bakheng bear to this definition. Preah Vhea belongs to the sacred power, of course; but this sacred power blesses only Khmer but not Thai.
Just like Bakheng and other sacred temples dedicated to Hinduism in the Khmer Empire and elsewhere, Preah Vihear as a sacred place have never been limited to the physical body of the temple complex. Preah Vihear represents the interrelation between human, nature, and god. Any attempt to break this interrelation means illusion, a curse, and chaos, for damage in this interrelation would bring destruction and disorder to the cosmic order. There have been a strong belief that those who committed such a sin would be reborn in hell. I doubt if Aka Desvacar(literarily means a great monkey teacher) Srisakra Vallibhotama understand this significant meaning which is universal to any religious monuments devoted to Hinduism. If he does, why does he support the shameless juridical interpretation of the conclusion ruled by Hague International Court, circulated among Thai extreme nationalist politicians and civilians? According to this interpretation, “The World Court only passed a decision to return the right of possession over the sanctuary and the surrounding area, not the whole mountain.” Does he know that compared to other temples located in other astro-geographical location, in Hindus belief, Preah Vihear Temple, measured on the base of ancient astrology, is located in the best position with cosmological landscape corresponding to the axis of universe or axis mundi?
When talking about axis mundi, every archeologist, except Aka Desvacar Srisakra Vallibhotama, knows that axis mundus is the axis of symmetry formed by the joint between two vertical axis, one above the ground, while the other below the ground, representing a point of connection between the sky and the earth, between the heaven, this world, and under-world, and between masculinity and femininity. Marcia Eliade, an authority of religious studies, established that " Centers are always powerful because they constitute a point of intersection between the three regions: heaven, earth, hell. Here at the center a breakthrough is possible and communication between these three worlds is opened up. Usually, there is a vertical conduit of some sort at the center of the sacred space that acts as the channel of communication". According to Eliade, the conduit is an archetypal axis mundi, an earth axis "which at once connects and supports heaven and earth whose base is fixed in the world below". Eliade's explanation of axis mundus proves to be valid when it comes to all religious monuments devoted to Hinduism, as well as to Buddhism, in Cambodia, and other regions belonging to the Khmer Empire. Aka Desvacar Srisakra Vallibhotama, if you were not blind, you would use your eyes (but not brain since you do not have it) to read some reports of excavations in some temples either in Cambodia or in current Thailand and Laos. Then, you would have learnt that beneath the base of each temple complex, there is always a hole dug down to the earth. This hole was not made just for fun; it is the negative axis, standing below the ground to represents the underworld, while the base represent the point of beginning and the present world, so it is the earth. The mountain along with the temple complex rising up to the sky in the form of a column is the positive axis, which signifies the heaven. It is this point of connection where the sacred manifest itself in the representation of cosmic order in which time and space is bonded to the Lord. Preah Vihear and Bakheng bears witness to the permanent connection between the Lord and the sacred Land of Kampuja, the fatherland of Khmer, the race blessed by the Lord. Aka Desvacar Srisakra Vallibhotama, together with another drunken Thai historian Dhida Saraya, your misconceptions of Hindus thoughts leads you to think that Preah Vihear was dedicated to all men. You could say so if this temple was dedicated to Buddhism, since Buddhism never discriminates against people from different belief, thus it embraces different people with different beliefs. But Preah Vihear had been a Hindus temple, whose significance had always been attached to caste and racial connotations. While in every theist religion, there is a boundary between sacred and profane, Preah Vihear temple bears witness to the religious idea of hierophany, explained by Eliade that "something sacred shows itself to us". That simply means, the sacred of Preah Vihear Temple shows itself only to Khmers, but not to Thais. At this point, I agree with Prof. Son Soubert, who rejects the statement made by Thai police that vandalization of Phnom Rung Temple, which was built by a Khmer King and now situated in Thailand, was related to the ritual of ethnic Khmer living in that area.
Ultimately, Preah Vihear temple, Preach Vihear Mountain, the underground structures of both the temple and the mountain are inseparable body of ultimate Lingam-Yoni made ultra-sanctified on the ground of combining micro-cosmos and macro-cosmos, the svāyambhuva linga linga(natural linga, as represented by the natural mountain in the shape of a column) and sathapa linga( which, according to Ang Choulean, refers to man-made lingua representing Shiva), the temple complex and the ground, the stone Linga, and Yoni all in the name of the replica, repeating ad libitum the same archaic image of God. Preah Vihear, in its original sense, is the oneness of the sacred space in which the linga, the temple, the mountain, and its vicinity expanding up to the sky and down to the inner core of the earth become one; that is the sacred space of Kambuja.
May Lord Shiva bring curses to whoever demands the split of the sacred space.

anyway, cambodia, please make sure to use old maps that going back early 1900s and 1950s, etc. as the newer maps i saw in tourist brouchers aren't official and they ten to be very biased against cambodia. cambodia out set aside our officially recognized map of our country with the UN and always go by those maps so in the future, our children don't have to worry about losing more land or territory to the thieve neighbors again. on top of that, if we continue to lose more land to neighboring countries, maybe it time for us to reclaim all of our original lands back from the time of our great khmer angkor civilization when there were no such thing as thailand, laos, vietnam in the present areas. just because cambodia has a unique culture etc., doesn't mean the thieve, greedy neigbhoring countries can take full advantage of our leniency. enough is enough already! cambodia is not made to be conquered forever! maybe it's time that we reconquered our lands back, especially if they keep trying to claim cambodia for their own without any regards to our sovereignty and national interest as well. any justification they have makes no sense to cambodia and we definitely do not buy it. god bless cambodia.
alos, cambodia please don't forget to educate the world (through their embassies in cambodia) every thing about cambodia, even the maps, etc, etc., i mean everything. we have to educate the entire world about our country as the world is still very much ignorant about cambodia. believe me when i say this because i live outside of cambodia and i can see what is going on around the world and see from a different perspective that the world is still very much ignorant about cambodia in many way. it is everyone's job to try to educate the world about our country, i mean everybody can do this to help cambodia. we may be a small country, but still we are very old and very rich in history, unique in culture and more...for example some people only know about siem and youn food as there are thai restaurants almost every corner of the world and people world know about vietnam because of the vietnam war, etc..., i think cambodia should make our country be known to the world as well as the thai and the viets do their to the world. afterall, we have our great khmer heritage; we also have our beautiful coastline with great sunsets; we have some of the world's most unique ecosystem and unique and rare animals species not found anywhere else in the world like our river dolphins, the great variety of fresh, tropical fish in our great waterway systems, not to mention our great, unique khmer culture like the world heritage royal khmer ballet and other cultural tradition, etc, etc... and so on... we can share our cultural and traditional wealth with the world if only we make it know to the whole world. because, often, those lucky fews to happened to visit cambodia would often say that they fall in love with cambodia easily once they laid their eyes in cambodia. seeing is believe is very true. so please educate the world about cambodia. thank you and god bless cambodia.
