Thailand and Cambodia settle border temple dispute

Bangkok - Thailand and Cambodia have resolved a border dispute over the Hindu-style Preah Vihear temple, paving the way for the ancient site to become a UN World Heritage Site candidate, media reports said Sunday. In a meeting brokered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris Thursday, Cambodia agreed to a Thai proposal that only the temple compound, and not territory surrounding it, would be included in the World Heritage Site proposal, Thai Foreign Minister Noppodon Pattama told the Bangkok Post.

Thailand had previously blocked Cambodia's bid to get the temple listed as a world heritage site on the grounds that the proposal included land around the temple compound that was still subject to a border dispute between the two countries.

Preah Vihear, or Phra Viharn as it is called in Thai, has been a contentious issue between the two neighbouring countries for decades.

A dispute over ownership of the ancient temple, which straddles the Thai-Cambodian border, was taken to the International Court of Justice, which ruled on June 15, 1962, that the site belonged to Cambodia.

Although the temple, perched on a cliff overlooking Cambodia, is now under the management of the Cambodian government, the easiest access to the site for tourists is via Thailand.

Cambodia must now draw up a new map for its Preah Vihear World Heritage Site proposal and send it to UNESCO by June 6. The new sites will be announced by UNESCO in July.

Too bad, we lost out to Thailand. The World court decision in 1962 clearly said Preah Vihear temple and the surrounding land are in Cambodia, based on the treaty of 1904-1907.

Since Preah Vihear and the surrounding land are khmer according to the Wold Court 1962 decision, we should list both as world heritage sites. How can we list the temple without the land around it. Since we can't access the place the listing is useless.

Thailand like Vietnam, they are good in protecting their territory land. Cambodia is incomparable for its kindness to cede some land to others in order to find compromising. I dare say this referring to Hun Sen administration only.

Let check the decision of Hague international court again, did they include the land site or just the temple?

Nonsense Ah Khmer-Yuon, if Khmer leaders has ever been good in protecting its territory, Cambodia would not be the smallest country in the region.

some folks could have asked Khemara Times, insurance brokers, and some realtors who are Hun Xen's best bootlickers living in Long Beach; they are able to help settle down the dispute, and win back our lost land.

Preah Vihear issue is not yet done. It is going to be more headache to come. Cambodia should solve the issue of Preah Vihear now once and for all. We don't want to hear Thailand having a hand in our sovereignty again. Cambodia just allow the issue to go on... I am sick of them. Cambodia must know that when we have we must solve them; sweep under the carpet will not go away... It is better to solve it now... I think we just allow them the opportunity to come back and haunt us again.

people, you don't look at historical cambodian weakness as a pattern or a failure that seems to go on forever, you should look at historical data as something to learn from and take a different approach if possible. however, you don't want to make the same mistakes over and over again like the past. the past is history. plus the past dark age was lawless and the world as not that educated either, then. so, focus on the bright, new future to come, cambodia. please learn not to repeat same stupid mistakes again and again if we want our country to be better than the past dark age. everyone makes mistake, but the difference is they learned from it. i hope cambodia is wiser in that regards. two wrongs won't make it right. this is a very powerful statement, please expedite it. don't forget to always learn from the entire world around you. god bless cambodia.
