Koh Kong to become ‘second Hong Kong’ : Thaksin

Koh Kong province is to become an investment hot-spot with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra proposing billions of dollars worth of development.

Thaksin told Prime Minister Hun Sen that Koh Kong had good potential for economic development that would drive poverty reduction for Cambodian-Thai border areas in a May 23 meeting at the premier’s Takmao residence. Saudi Arabian and British investors were also present at the talks.

Eang Sophalet, a personal assistant to Hun Sen, said yesterday that Thaksin’s intended investment focused on the environment. “[Thaksin] spoke of his intention to invest in building a city which is environmentally sound, with hospitals, houses, and hotels.”

An international port and shipyard will also be constructed, Eang Sophalet said.

The newly renovated 152 km National Highway 48, including a 1,560-meter concrete bridge, has piqued investors’ interest in Koh Kong, with several projects planned for the formerly isolated province.

Hun Sen welcomed Thaksin’s ideas, Eng Sophalet said. “Samdech Hun Sen asked Thaksin to cooperate with the Council for the Development of Cambodia to make sure the project contributes to Cambodia’s poverty reduction,” he added.

No information about the total cost of the project was revealed, but the project is thought to be worth billions of dollars. Though there was no timetable for construction, Thaksin has told Thai media he wants Koh Kong to become a “second Hong Kong.”

Hun Sen and Thaksin are the best friends so all contracts will be done easily. don't forget that nowaday, Koh Kong seems to be a province of Thailand when the people speak only Thais, learn Thais and use Thai currency and if Thaksin develops this province with billion of dollars Koh Kong will be likely become to Thai territory automatically.

Historically, Hawaii (not by choice) became the 50th state of the United States following sugar interest, which led to overthrow the king. Therefore, the natives did not have much say; nevertheless, they (natives)do not have much to say until this day (because the natives were tricked by the Americans).

Cambodia had the French for nearly 100 years, 1:22, but we didn't see no Hawaii here except for us were getting poorer and poorer.

Remember one thing my friends, soon the so-called Cambodian people commonly referred to as "Petit peuple (little people)" by Sihanouk will be Vietnamized from Head to Toes...

Whatever happens to the real poor Khmer people, the Khmer-Yuons don't care; they call it development when the poor are unjustly kicked out from their huts.

Congratulation 10:21PM for your patriotism. Now, you knew your prime minister and his CPP allowed yuons to come an settled all over your country. My question to you is ;are you going to do something to save your country , or just barking and doing nothing and hope for the best .If you are just doing nothing your people will call you ah CHA TA THESS. Another contradiction, you seem to hate yuon ,we all do,but your sdach ta was yuon's friend, your sdach ta was vietcong's darling , how can you praise your sdach ta and hate yuon at the same time ?.

Thing is moving, 7:15 if you are a young person you will see throughout your life; i don't have to response you any thing else. I have a technical question for you to thing about, have ever you seen a dog seat down, then how long is it?. you will remember my question why I have mentioned a dog as exemple. My SDACH-TA is talking, the more he talks, the more iritation on the theives are. He is the major obstacle to them both, comparable to a needle within their occulars.

Long lives the KING (SDACH-TA) and Khmer people.

Thaksin didn't succeed turning Thailand into a second Hong Kong, now he'll try it with Koh Kong. I guess if he fails again his next stop would be Myanmar.
Keep up the good job Thak we 100% with you.

why is there so racism? is patriotism such a good thing? everyone seem to be so against the neighbouring countries, the vietnamese and the thais. what help does this bring to your poverty-stricken country? if there are people who are willing to invest in the country it will only help it prosper, especially investment in infrastructure. they plan to invest huge amounts of money and this will only benefit the area. there will be people moved or evicted but even if they were not moved they would eventually move out of there anyway if the area is not going to grow. more and more people are moving to cities for a good reason so if the investment brings employment and wealth to the area whats the con in that?
