Phnom Penh - Cambodia's royal palace officials on Sunday strongly denied an enigmatic letter distributed to the press by former king Norodom Sihanouk indicated that his son, King Norodom Sihamoni, might abdicate. But the palace did not say what the letter actually meant, while Sihanouk himself remained silent. The letter and its possible interpretations has caused a stir in some quarters with a national election looming in July.
In copies of the letter, handwritten in French and distributed Friday, Sihanouk speaks of a looming crisis for the Cambodian monarchy "in the near or far future", using the French words "chances" and "deposee."
He also speaks of a "simple life" abroad in Paris.
The monarchy is a pillar of the Cambodian constitution, and the king, seen as a demi-god by many ordinary people, is widely recognized as a symbol of stability.
Sihamoni took the throne in 2004 after his octogenarian father abdicated, citing old age and ill health.
Sihanouk may be the only monarch in the world to abdicate twice - once in favour of his own father so he could take a political role in the 1950's, and again, after many hints and false alarms, four years ago.
Sihamoni, 55, is popular with the public and politicians alike for his quiet manner and stately bearing. Unlike his father, he rarely makes public speeches or statements.

Isn't it very clear that Royal members are insane people. The Cambodian monarchy is an insult to its people
He is over eighty. He may be senile or on the verge of insanity. He should let his son speak out for himself about abdication. Or use another blog website like the old Ruom Rith one. Circulating rumour using own name will create credibility for the royal family, and it is not good for the stability of the country.
A sign that the monarchy is under a lot of political pressure. The abdication news was not good for a certain group/individual. It is damned if you do, and if you don't.
It seems like the monarchy is only needed as an instrument to legitimize a certain group/individual existence - to show that they are for a Constitutional Monarchy system.

Hun Sen and CPP want to get rid of the royal family. These are facts! They should thank him for his help. We know that for sometime Hun Sen repeated tirelessly that he is the Sdach Korn incarnation and undoubtedly, the sole and real master in modern Cambodia! All the Khmer republicans and friends of Youn should be happy with this help from the King father. And this came before at a good time, just before the election taking place. So they can freely campaign for a second Khmer Republic or Khmer-Youn Republic and let Cambodians know they are against the monarchy in Cambodia. We know very well that their masters are Youn Communists. Their allegiance goes to Ho Chi Minh not Sihanouk or King Sihamoni. So go for it and let our King alone. His is near ninety, even older than their own parents. Could they let him alone?

Sihanouk was a weird politician that has ever existed .A prince from a royal family who loved French's food,women ,luxury, and have multiple wives but so cozy with COMMUNIST a system that pride itself on hatre toward capitalists but can't live without them.It's so obvious that nobody but Sihanouk himself who made the khmer people distrust and spurned the royal's families and perhap who know may be abolish the monarchy altogether.
