The National Security Council (NSC) is satisfied with the new version of the border map of the Preah Vihear temple site re-drawn by Cambodia, but says a field survey is still needed to verify all the details.

Experts from the Royal Thai Survey Department will conduct a joint survey with Cambodian officials to make sure the new map does not include the overlapping areas, the source of the long-running dispute between the two countries since the International Court of Justice's ruling that the ancient temple belonged to Cambodia.

The NSC's decision was announced following its meeting yesterday. After the completion of the survey, the matter will be forwarded for cabinet consideration before Thailand replies to Cambodia whether it agrees with the new map, said Tharit Jarungwat, chief of the Department of Information under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The map was re-drawn and handed to Thailand last Thursday following an agreement between the two countries to do so during a Unesco-brokered meeting in Paris late last month.

If Thailand approves it, Cambodia will use the map in applying with Unesco _ the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation _ for registration of the temple as a World Heritage site early next month in Canada.

Supreme Commander Gen Boonsrang Niempradit said in most part the redrawn map by Cambodia was in line with what Thailand wanted, and the disagreements that still remained only involved some minute details.

''The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should be handling the remaining problems [the disagreed part] so that relations between the two countries are not affected,'' Gen Boonsang said.

He expects the two countries to soon reach a deal on the issue.

But an agreement on the joint development and management of the area could be signed in future, he said.

Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama earlier said that according to the new map only the temple and 30 metres of its adjacent areas would be put up for listing.

Cambodia's previous proposal to Unesco also included the disputed 4.6-square-kilometre border between Si Sa Ket's Kantharalak district and Preah Vihear province for listing.

there shouldn't even be any disputed on this temple. but it is true that the thai is enchoarching on the khmer territories everyday.
they come in to village and terrorize villagers to move out in side of our own land. if we were smart our government can just sent a batch of army to wait untill they are int the khmer soil then just open fire on all of them.. kill them all then international communities will not say a thing cuz they were on khmer land and we shot them we are right.

Anything the siam want they get it, next step is gruadally move in to occupy the temple. You might as well give to them now rather than wasting your time defending andarguing about it.

This is a win-win situation.

Thailand is not stupid like Cambodia under former communist regime. In 10 years do we Khmer habe chance a land for living?

During the Khmer Rouge era, the Thai was afraid to cough, but to have redrawn the map would have an overwhelming response militarily.

yes. this is bullshit.
Khmer think they gain something, but in fact they don't. The temple and land there already belonged to khmer. Thai would not agree to anything if they don't gain something. They have diplomats and news media working overtime trying to convince the world that they are right. Khmer have nothing and nobody to work for them. They will always lose.

Both Yuon and Thai have been enchroaching on our territory time after time because our leaders are less patriotic than selfish and idiotic.

khmer thai is a traitor! you assimilate to the thai nation, and let them live in khmerland. you don't deserve to re claim. and you don't even deserve to be khmer anymore. The Thai was just a wandering troop that had no culture and place to live. they got defeated by china and burmese. khmer traitor let them in the country. they are theif in nature, when angkor decline, they took advantage to use khmer troop and techniqe to fight Angkor. Thai is slave in nature. they consider lucky that khmer let them live in Khmerland. They deserve nothing.

All the bad things happen to our country why???????? Because we don't know how to united RIGHT? Who are we going to blame siam, youn or Khmer ourself? Just for talking we are number ONE but for other we are number what?? hun sen, chea sim, heng samrin do you know how hight of their education? Do they knew how to united? GUESS??? For talking and action or only talk without action which one is best? I don't think it's hard for all of us to understand. When we were an EMPIRE's KHMER we were together.

We khmer deserve the be encroached by land, air, and sea because we support an uneducated leaders like Hun Sen and Sihanouk. So where is Sihanouk?

Look at Thai they use their supreme commander to itimidate Ah Hun Sen and Nam Hong. Ah Nam Hong signed everything that his neighbor asked for. Ah Nam Hong gets bribe money from Hanoi and Siem.

Thank you Thailand who fight for your land where Khmer leaders fight for giveaway land. So How dumb are our leaders? They're so dumb and shit.

As one comment says, let Thai have all the temple because just 30 meters that Thai left for us is nonething. When the visitors come to visit the temple and step one foot into Thailand, they'll be in trouble. Next time sign a stupid palace and Tourl Krosaing to Siem and Hanoi. Don't forget.

True, don't know when we going to have a nationalist to protect our country from these hungry neighbors. HUN SEN will be having a bad name like Sihanouk that our leaders like them kept on loosing our lands, sea, air to these hungry neighbors. Why can't just do anything it takes to protect our belongs. Look at Isreal they are really strong and surrounded by most populous Arab (close to 200 millions Arab) and Israel only have 3-4 millions. Come on! we can do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, but it's better to lose land to Khmer than to Zimbabwean.

Anonymous said...

We the people know how to unite, but our leaders are the dividers.

Isn't this guy 11:16PM know what is Zimbabwe looks like? Does he know the history of Zimbabwe. In reverse talking he is talking about HUN SEN regime that going to be as Zimbabwe. Is he stupid or what? Every words he is mention about Zimbabwe. He needs to be learning more about Zimbabwe history. To all Khmer, I really applaud you all that we respect each other on national interests except this guy he doens't know what he is talking about. Jayo! Khmer!!

the way i see it is that thailand do not know how to approach cambodia diplomatically on the issue of preah vihear as it is a very sensitive issue for cambodia as well. however, the real issue is not preah vihear as that was ruled in cambodia's favor already since 1962, and that was permenant, regardless of the state of cambodia was in since then. just because preah vihear temple was being isolated due to civil conflict in cambodia doesn't mean thailand can go back and discard or disrespect the world's court ruling. the court rule was permenant, regardless.

that said, the other problem thailand have is miscommunication with cambodia. for example, they tend to mix several issues into one that seemed like they are still wanting preah vihear for themselve by ignoring the 15 June 1962 court's ruling. for one, the said that they are not disputing the actual temple, but the surround or adjacent or overlapped area near the cambodian temple. but they tend to mix all of that together to look like they are disputing the temple. well, there is no actual dispute on the temple as that was already ruled in favor of cambodia by the world as our witness; however, thailand claims that the so-called "4.6 km2 area is in dispute, yet they continue to say that when cambodia draws up this "new map", that cambodia can not later go back and claim this so-called "disputed area" in exchange for preah vihear. i say what the hell is thailand talking about? the temple and the "disputed area" are two separate issues here, again, don't mix them up with the temple. and definitely do not misunderstood that just because thailand agreed to preah vihear temple listing with unesco that cambodia can not later reclaim the so-called "overlapped area or disputed area." what a dispecable trick or act for thailand to say this thinking or hoping cambodia is dumb enough to go with their plan. cambodia do not buy that. they are two separate issues. don't forget that. so, that mean, this "disputed, overlapped area" of so-called 4.6 km2 still needed to be worked on or marked properly with the agreement by cambodia as well.
