Original report from Phnom Penh
09 June 2008
Former king Norodom Sihanouk said Monday there was no plan for his son, King Norodom Sihamoni, to abdicate the throne, but he said the royal family does have a plan if ever the monarchy is abolished.
"This is not an abdication, but an exile without protestation, if Phnom Penh would abolish the monarchy," Sihanouk wrote in a letter issued Monday by the Royal Palace.
Sihanouk said in a letter Friday the monarchy had a chance of being deposed, but in that case his son would return to France and he would live in another country. He asked that his name not be used in association with the founding of the coalition party, Funcinpec, and that politics put the throne "under risk."
"In waiting for this abolition, we thought a long time ago about following a plan," Sihanouk wrote Monday.
In the meantime, the royal family would remain in Cambodia through the election period, leaving Aug. 1 to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
"After that King Sihamoni will have a general check-up at the central hospital of the state in Beijing," Sihanouk wrote. "After the check-up he will return to Cambodia. My wife and I will continue to stay for some period in Beijing to have general check-ups and medical treatment."
Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith declined to comment on the message.

well, get smart, khmer people, maybe this is a hint from the beloved ex-monarchy that the royal family of cambodia had agreed to not get involved in politics any longer as the people's wish. however, don't expect the monarchy to surrender openly as to save the royal dignity as well. perhaps is is a subtle admission being hinted by one of the world's most skillful monarchy. after all, the ex-king wasn't born yesterday; give him some credit for he too did a lot of good thing for cambodia. just because the KR did a brief interruption in cambodia doesn't mean the ex-monarchy was all that bad. the ex-king was human and all human beings make mistake in their life. as god said no one is perfect. anyway, this is just my opinion as i think it is. this is better planned that a coup which could be bloodless or bloody, but who want to take that chance given they have everything for them, like money, luxury, wealth, etc..., why risk losing it all to a stupid disagreement! compromise is better, if you ask me. god bless the monarchy and cambodia.
i don't think the monarchy label themselves as god-king; the people of cambodia gave that title to them as they love the monarch so much, and thus the royal family stuck with that title which is ok as long as we understand that. thank you.
Sihanouk,
You have seen already that your fate and the fate of your monarchy rest entirely in the hands of the Viets and those of Hun Sen, haven't you?
You will also see that finally, you can count on nobody to save you, not even your so-called "Petit peuple" because your petit peuple is controlled and oppressed by the Viets and Hun Sen himself, won't you? And then, are you still hoping to be burried next to HO?
Just one Cambodian lad
We'll keep the king as an international community bargaining chip.

Everyone should know by now that our culture ties heavily to the monarchy. Destroy the monarchy is destroying ourself!!!!!!!!. King or Queen can live with us. Sure they can co-exist. As long as they know what they are doing or we know what we doing. Another word " Respect " my friend. It plays a huge role across the globe today and it should play a huge role in Cambodia. If you don't have respect for other people, you just cann't live anywhere.
As nice and innocent as King Sihamoni, we let him go?!!! For what???!!!!!!!!!!for another chaostic and trouble for Cambodia??!!!!! Please don't say that we are a damm fool once again! Think and please think my friend. THE MONARCHY CAN CO-EXIST JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE!!! EVEN THAT IDIOT HUN SEN AND HIS CLAN OR BUDDIES CAN TOO. Where are they suppose to go? Their country is Cambodia just like the rest of 14 millions of us.THEY JUST NEED TO KNOW AND RESPECT REAL LAW OF THE COUNTRY AND GO ABOUT CONFORMING IT. Look! republic is welcoming, because it's great, but so does the country with the monarchy, especially with the one that don't really have the executive power and only the symbol of the country! KIng should have certain power for the better of the country. What do you think? Shouldn't the republic and the monarchy co-exist be better???????? Please take a look at Britain or the rest of the monarchies in Europe. How did they survive? Why does it always have to have violence or fight for power? To hell with Nepal!!!! If the want to go on without their Monarchy, let them go and let them find out out the hard way. We have been there and Done that. Don't need the stupid way again. Ever!!!!!!!!!!
yes, mutual respect is mandatory in a civil society; this is so anywhere in the world as well. you can't just go around and calling names or whatever. respect goes both ways as well. you don't deserve one if you can't give one. so there!
Well my friend, respect is the key here. However, kneeling down to your knees and kisses "A-sdach's ass" every time you meet with a-sdach is beyond respects my FRIEND. You don't even do that to your parents, but you would do to a-sdach. Wake up my friend, this 2008. Why a-sdach any better than any of us? His shit smell just like yours and mine and they bleed and dies just like all of us. All sdach are murderer and robbers.
Therefore, this is a great opportunity to abolish a-puch-sdach (murderer) once and for all. Sure, we abolished one bad apple we will discovered another bad apple, but atleast we have one less bad apple to worry about. They can find their ways to live just like you and I. We should not continue to provide them with special privileges, let’s give those privileges ($$$$) to the Khmers that really needs it. A-puch-sdach, get off your asses and find ways to feed your own family.
Smarter Khmers Generation!!!
Yeah, this stupid royal family use too much money from the government budget by doing nothing (only singing, partying, medical checking-up,...) while the poor Cambodian people work very hard.
Yes, and so does Ah Scam Rainxy and his useless cyclo drivers clan.
Between monarchy and republicanism, I choose contitutional monrachy after the English model. Off course no one wants to go back to the absolute monarchy of yesteryear nor to feodalism. We want to preserve our monarchic tradition, culture, royal dance, royal classical musics (ramanaya), and royal language(pali-sanskrit bases)... Look at Angkor Wat for example built by our great Khmer kings. Because they are of high world standard of developments, they were copied from us by the Thai and the Lao since Sukhothai. Ask the Loa people now, how sorry they are now for eliminating their own monarchy (King Savangvong killed in 1975 by the communists). NO, to the return to the republican regime in Cambodia.
Cambodia is a weakest nation in Southeast Asia. Abolish the Monarchy is giving a weapon to the foreigners to enjoy the land they have fought for many centuries finally they got.
Great for Thailand who keep and preserve Khmer culture as their own.
Cambodian monarchy under King Norodom Sihamoni is an English Model.
I have to admire the Vietnamese who have been struggled for many centuries to fianlly almost defeat their stubborn enemy (Khmer Kings).
They are getting close to shut the door of Cambodia. The reclaim of Preah Vihear by Thai monarchy is appropriate, because some of Thai Kings were Khmer Morn.
Don't worry Sihamoni you mother Monique would not accept you resignation. Even after her death she will still haunt you to keep you as her puppet, for her hidden agenda (that we all know about).
If people want to keep sdach let them vote.Having monarchy is like having cast system. They are the superior and we are the dirt inferior.Just listen when they speak to each others.Their language alone is not real,i.e preah karona thlay vises, preah korona chivit domkol leu tbaung, krap krorm laong thouli preah bat.....it's just SUCK. We the khmer doesn't want that anymore.
To 7:24am ( smarter Khmer generation ,
Please find your God damm way to marry into the royal family then you may be off stupid! Look! may be your daughter will never be the future Queen of Cambodia or it's really hard to bow your head down on the floor for King and Queen, but who says that bad behavior and attitude cann't not be changed by law? or somebody else didn't want their daughter to be the future Queen of Cambodia? You're not giving your thought thourought enough for everything. Like Cambodia doesn't need a stable ground for those foreign investors to come and do business here, right? Are you trying to demolish this stable ground that had been established by the UN for us since 1991? and restart your whatever system in your dream from ground zero up just like ah Klout KR did? You're out of your God damm mind.
You need to act like King yourself man. That's all you need to do and what kind of King are you? can you invent or pull one? and even demand for one? Come on!
Sick and tire of someone or family that is so important to Cambodian Nation being ignore like shit. Did any politician or King or Queen or Prince ever pay attention to Khmer's great artist? The Sinn & The Ros's family live like dirt when millions live to enjoy their golden voices and creations like there is no tomorrow. That is us Khmer. Shame and shame on us. Keep destroying what you already have and you sure can build more and higher on it. Correcting it stupid and not at all destroying!
