Kathmandu, Nepal (AHN) - Nepal's former king Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, and the last monarch of the Shah dynasty, which reigned for almost 240 years, is now a commoner and will be living "amongst his people," after vacating the royal palace Wednesday night.
A statement issued Nepal's Peace and Construction Minister Ram Chandra Poudel said,"The former king has become an ordinary citizen now. He will get the same status and benefits from the government the other citizen are getting."
Early in the day, Gyanendra met the members of the press for the last time at Narayanhiti palace. The former king was stripped of his power as ruler of the Himalayan nation after the Constituent Assembly declared the nation the newest democracy on May 28 and abolished the monarchy.
The government gave Gyanendra 15 days to leave the former royal palace and offered him the Najarjun palace as his new residence. The Narayanhiti palace will be turned into a museum by the new government.
The former king's new home consists of 10 buildings including the ex-royals' residence, three guest houses, one office secretariat and one staff quarters.

I would like to say that this Nepal King is very wise and very intelligence for leaving his palace with peace. He will be remembered by his people heart. In time of need, his people will invite them again to lead their country. They have left their Palace with dignity and pride. They are so wonderfull. They are fully different from Sihanouk for calling Vietcong to onslaught onto Cambodian people within days of their fall. I wish Nepal King and their royal family with good health and long lives. This is an example or good model to the country. Instead our former kings Sihanouk took Cambodia's matter into his own hands by siding with the Communist and seek revenge to those who didn't want him in early 70s. For what I'm understanding about Sihanouk back then when I was following his news and Cambodian politics Sihanouk really mad that Cambodian under Lon Nol doens't want Sihanouk anymore because Sihanouk gave sanctuary to VIET CONG inside Cambodia. When he got disposed, he didn't bother to come back to take control because LON NOL had invited him to and his wife (fromer queen) also play a big roll not seek reunification or reconcilation over Cambodia and let Cambodia went down hill. Inclusion, Sihanouk really took this matter as his revenge. I wish he could have think more about the country. For Napali, the former king had left with pride and dignity.

as human being there are good and bad people, when you come a cross bad king or price, princess from royal family doesnt mean all of royal people are bad, he ordinary people can be bad too, otherwise our country will not become as today state, hunger, desperate people, curruption, health care, justic, role of law, everywhere you go you will see how people suffer from natural disaster, poerfulman encroching for the health and power to the poor, when you go hospital,they ask you for money. these all happened because the bad, unhonest people in power.

In Ventiene, Laos, when there are people on the motor cycle or bicycles and if the person have their hat on thier head they took it off and slowly walk instead of riding or walking through. wake up cambodia, no more just about the "palace" as cambodia is way in the majority than a small special interest group of rulers. what is the big deal. look around the world, monarchy are being abolished all over the world since the 1800s and 1900s and even into the 20th century. however, that doesn't mean cambodia hate the royal family members and monarchy. it just means the royal needs reforms in order for people to love and respect royal as this is not the dark ages anymore and never will be again. so, it's a wake up call not to be so arrogant, so elitist, so hierarchical etc. be respect the constitution and laws as no one is to be above the law of the land anymore. there are still plenty of time to reform and win love and respect from the people, please don't let it slip away wastefully. that's all! god bless the khmer royal family and cambodia as a whole.

The Khmer King (royal family) today doesn't have any power. He's just the representation of the monarchy of our long history. Our country is born and rests till today because of the King foundation. So he should be kept to be this symbol (long history).
Hence, the main power today is in someoneelse's hand. The power of governance is in the PM's hand. If you are alway good at criticize someone else, go ahead to support the political party that you think better or you start to create a political party yourself if the other parties you are not satified. To say out loud it is easy, but to do is a better way to show your motivation!

well, it's called changes as the world does not stay the stay. of course, cambodia was all ran and ruled by powerful monarchy for ages, so does most of the world's countries out there, then. i think cambodian people want that, however, they also want a respectable royal person not the kind that abandon the country and cause problems from overseas and then run back overseas and never stay home in cambodia to carry out state duties for the people and country. how can people still love and respect? plus, history, cambodian or world, has shown that absolute monarchy is outdated and no one or country will tolerate that kind of government anymore like during the dark ages when people had no choice and no law, so then was great; however, 2008 and beyond cambodia and world for that matter, it's just not feesable any longer to have absolute monarchy. so, have to follow the rule of laws just like everyone else. did the KR taught cambodia that lesson already by their ruthless killings and stone age revolutionary vision? i guess some people did not live under the KR regime so they have no clue what's life was like then for most cambodians. i think a good leader should have been through difficulty in life to feel for the suffering people. otherwise, they can not claim to be a good leader without some sort of bootcamp experience in life. god bless cambodia.

There will be no state of Vietnam and Sihanouk did not destroy Cambodia. Vietnamese have attempted to take Cambodia for a long times ago. They took and shared Cambodia with T'ai. Cambodia was freed from T'ai but not from Vietnamese, because French brought them along with. True we all knew that Kheatakors are Vietnamese.
Why the Vietnamese have wanted to take Cambodia? The Khmers used to invaded Vietnam and Champa before T'ai destroyed Angkor.

Some of you have made comments regarding our kings in the Angkor Wat era as some of the greatest kings of Khmer. I am agreed with this claim to a certain extends. They left a national treasure to be proud and share with the world. However, please do not give all the credits to the kings. Sure, it was the kings that had plans to build such a monumental for us to enjoy years later. But, we should give some of the credits to our ancestors that sacrificed their lives building these temples throughout Khmer. It was their sweats and blood that pushed each temple toward the sky. I don’t have the evidence to support my claim, but I believed that most of the Khmers were force to perform these heavy labors.
Therefore, they were the real heroes in my eyes. For the Khmers to catch up with the rest of the world, we should start to realize that Kings are not god. They do not have special power anymore than any of us. There were thousands of Khmers sacrificed their lives building Khmer Empire, not the kings. True, a family must have a head of a household and a country must have its leader. A great/true Leader is a servant to his or her people, But kings treated people as their servants.
Therefore, we all should come to a realization that Khmer Empire was built by all of the Khmers over thousands of years only to be destroyed by terrible leaders such as Sihanouk, Rannarith, Pol Pot, and Hun Sen in less than 60 years.
My Khmer brothers and sisters, we must not kneel down to our knees for any mortals. We must not believe that we are anything less than other mortals. We must not continue to give credits to servants’ masters (kings). We must not fight amongst brothers and sisters (Khmers).
My Khmer brothers and sisters, we must keep our head high and believe that we are an equal being. We must honor our ancestors (servants that built Khmer empire) for sacrificing their lives for us to enjoy (or destroy). We must stand side by side with our brothers and sisters through good and bad time.
Khmer empire was built by Khmers and Khmers should preserve and continue to build Khmer empire (not destroy). We shall never forget the past and we shall learn from the past, but we shall live in the present and prevent past mistakes to repeat itself.
