A SRP MP wrote a letter on 23 June addressed to King Norodom Sihamoni, asking him to help intervene with the Vietnamese leaders for the release of Monk Tim Sakhorn.
The request by opposition MP Son Chhay, Chairman of Committee No. 5, in charge of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Information and News of the National Assembly, was made at a time when the king plans to visit Vietnam between 24 and 26 June, the king also planned to deposit a flower wreath at the mausoleum of the Vietnamese communist leader Ho Chi Minh.
Monk Tim Sakhorn was the former abbot of Phnom Den South pagoda, located in Takeo province. He was arrested by the Cambodian authority and deported to Vietnam which charged him of undermining the alliance between Cambodia and Vietnam. He was subsequently jailed in Motr Chrouk province (South Vietnam) since June 2007.
Son Chhay asked the king to request the Vietnamese authority, as well as President Nguyen Minh Triet, to provide decent living condition rights for Khmer Krom people whom reports indicated that they suffer the Vietnamese authority’s duress.
