This is my response to Dr. Chhim Phal Vorun' s statement.
Dr. Chhim Phal Vorun, Director of the Institute for Civil Education and a constitutional expert, stated that the royal family members have the rights to be involved in politics. To this point, I totally agree. The constitution does afford members of the royal family to be involved in politics.
Khmer people understand that members of the royal have the rights to be in politics. The fact that the law of the country allows them to do so does not mean that they should. One can easily argue with the same logic that the law of the land does not say any thing about corruption; therefore, it is O.K for some in the government to be corrupted. Corruption is unethical and it ruins the country.
Members of the royal family involve in politics is mater of conflict of interest. The argument that member of royal family are still Khmer citizens, and therefore, as citizens they have the same rights is fallacy.
While I agree with Dr. Chhim Phal Vorun that all members of the royal family are citizens, I don't think that they are as the same as all of us ordinary people. To this point, I respectfully disagree with Dr. Chhim Phal Vorun's statement.
As members of royal family by implication, they are in privileged class. One has to address them with special title. They have special access to King and the palace. Some of them can be very incompetent but if they choose to be in politics, they are given special positions. These are some of the reason why they are not as the same as ordinary Khmer citizens.
My point is yes, they are Khmer citizens but they are citizens with special privileges.
I don't mind that they are afforded with special privileges. It is our tradition. It is our culture. It is our heritage. I am proud of them as much as I am proud of myself for being borne to an ordinary Khmer.
I do mind when their involvement has a potential of ruining the country that I love dearly. Dr. Chhim Phal Vorun, an educated man, should know our history and I do not need to go there.
Although the constitution does not prevent members of the royal family from involving in politics, it is an enormous conflict of interest with our current system of constitutional monarchy. Why take any chances of making this institution marred by the involvements of royal members in politics.
The monarch should be the neutral arbitrator of political conflicts of the nation. If members of the royal family are in politics, it is highly likely that they will be in the middle of the conflict. That will put our monarch in a very difficult situation. I am not saying the monarch cannot be fair. Why take any chances.
Yes, they have the rights to be in politics, but for the sake of the country and the for the sake of the reputation of Khmer Monarchy, members of the royal family should not be in politics.

i think although every khmer citizen, given they had good education and a college degree, should have a right to be in politics, if they chose, especially if they have a good vision to lead cambodia in a good, lawful direction. however, it is just not a good idea for any member of the royal family to be active in politics, and there are good reasons for that. first off, royal family members are considered very respectable with the atmost dignity and so on. for that reason alone (although there are numerous more reasons), i don't think it is good to mix royal with active politics. royal member is prestigious and should only be ceremonial and no power involved as history has shown that have interfered with modern political decision as khmer do not want to argue with royal member. plus, politics itself is considered dirty and nasty and a lot of stress and headaches involved in political decision and debates, etc., and if a royal member still want to participate in active politics, that individual royal person ought be stripped of royal privileges. please study from england as how their royal stays out of active politics as that is good for the country. i think they (royal) have that rights as well as anyone else with good education, however, they have to choose one or the other. that said, though, please keep in mind that in cambodia now, nobody should be above the law of the country. i think royal members should be a supreme judge of the land, though. in other word, the khmer royal members can be active in the judiciary brance of the gov't like judges and mediator position only as that can help safeguard justice for the khmer people in general. god bless cambodia and her beautiful khmer people.
3"43am i WISH SOME DAY YOU BE JUDGED BY RANARITH NORODUMB!
BY constitution any one over 18 have the right to be inpolitic, stupid 3:43AM! do not need to accept faked PHD from the son of Ah goat face AH Ho Chi Minh!
one has to wonder, what is so special about being in politics? once corruption law is in place, politicians cannot be corrupt and rip off khmer people again. so, what is so special about it, beside having interest to serve your country. there ought to be a strict law to make politician's asset being under the radar screen so this kind of corruption practice that people tend to think goes with politicians, i mean all politicians in cambodia or in the world for that matter. this way, people would think twice about wanting to join in politics. make the requirements to be a cambodian politician hard like they do in colleges and universities each year to increase the number of courses requirements in order to graduate. same concept ought be apply in for top political position is cambodia so people will think twice about wanting to join in. this is let anybody with good interest join politics the same opportunity or something, and only the best and serious candidate will join for the purpose of serving your country, cambodia. god bless cambodia.
I think the Royal Family members should stay out of politics. The Monarchy should be like in England.
Cambodia should keep the Monarchy like in England.
2:53 AM and 3:26 AM.
