Senators asked the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation yesterday to defer consideration of the listing of Preah Vihear temple as a World Heritage site. They want Unesco to wait for a joint nomination for the ancient temple's listing by Thailand and Cambodia.
Their petition, with the signatures of almost 300 supporters, said such an important and disputed site should not be proposed for listing by Cambodia alone, as it borders both Thailand and Cambodia.
Phnom Penh closed the temple to visitors on Monday amid fears protests in Thailand over its listing would spread. Adjacent structures such as Sra Trao, or the ancient lake, two stupas, and ancient rocks and caves are all in Thailand.
Senator M.R. Priyanandana Rangsit urged Unesco to carefully examine all the information coming out of Cambodia, particularly details of the location of the related structures as they may not all be correct.
''People say that under the present proposal the listing of Preah Vihear may also absorb some Thai territory. But our group is looking beyond the border demarcation issue. We want to propose the best solution,'' said M.R. Priyanandana, deputy chair of the Senate committee on foreign affairs.
Sheldon Shaeffer, director of Unesco for the Asia-Pacific region, said he will send the petition to the organisation's head office in Paris.
Unesco's 21-member World Heritage Committee will begin a 10-day meeting in Quebec on July 2, with Preah Vihear on the agenda. Thailand and Cambodia will not be represented at the meeting.
Unesco adviser Richard Engelhardt said the questions raised by the senators about the integrity of the site were interesting.
The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) is also opposed to the government move backing Cambodia's latest bid to have the temple registered as a World Heritage site. The PAD turned to the Administrative Court for a ruling on the matter yesterday. The court accepted its complaint and will start considering the case tomorrow.
The PAD asked the court to nullify the June 17 cabinet resolution endorsing the new map of the temple boundary and the Thai-Cambodian joint statement allowing Cambodia to propose the registration of Preah Vihear to Unesco.
Key PAD leader Suriyasai Katasila said the movement was not trying to discredit the government. It was only fighting for justice, he said.
Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama said before yesterday's cabinet meeting the government was working with Cambodian authorities to reopen the temple as its closure was affecting tourism and cross-border trade.
Saman Sri-ngarm, who led a protest against the listing in Si Sa Ket's Kantharalak district, which adjoins the temple, reaffirmed his group would not end its rally until Cambodia withdraws its listing application.
Hang Soth, director-general of the Preah Vihear Authority, told the Associated Press yesterday that Cambodian authorities will consider reopening the entrance ''when the situation becomes normal and Thai demonstrators stop protesting in front of the temple.
''We decided to shut down the border entrance because we are afraid Thai demonstrators will reach the temple and cause problems for our people who live near the temple.'

Hello Abhisit Vejjajiva,
A quiz for you - why is one province of Cambodia (where Angkor Wat is) named "Siemreap"?
Patiently awaiting your answer to see if you are any smarter than a 5th grader?
Truly yours,
One 16-year-old Cambodian kid
urge all they want, unesco can not give way to favoritism or criminals. they only look at lawful court ruling of 1962. law is law and 46 years ago to make a violation now won't help the case either. god bless cambodia.
AH Abhisit Vejjajiva said that the Phrea Vihear case is a knock out punch for Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej to resign from power!
Well! This is what I can say to AH Abhisit Vejjajiva and I hope he become the Prime Minister of Thailame in the future but don't you dare set foot in Cambodia mother fucker!
AH Abhisit Vejjajiva is a modern day terrorist and disguises himself as the leader of democratic fool!
If you have ill will for Cambodia and her people and Cambodia and her people will have ill will for you too!
AH Abhisit Vejjajiva will be the last man on Earth to set on Cambodian soil!
We called Siamreap cause it means the Khmer had crushed the SIAM back then. SIAMREAP=Crush you till you flat. Or it means when the Khmer defeated SIAM there.
I see, and that is why Siam changed its name to Thailand.. you should know that, too.
The lowliness of the damn Thai is obvious. How low can you go, you shameless piece of crap. Your mother used to be my bed-partner. And I should share her too. I just can't find a strong enough word to curse you, because you're an animal.
What an ashame Thailand to the World!!!
Thai magazines described "Abhisit Vejjajiva" as Thailand's sexiest politician...it is very wrong for him to use Preah Vihear issue for his own political gains and to oust PM Samak from power.
Thai citizens should read and understand the verdict of ICJ of 1962 carefully. Preah Vihear sits on Cambodian soil and Cambodia has the rights to list it as a world heritage at its own will. Please stop meddling in Cambodia's internal affairs and have some dignity. God bless Kambuja.
If the Thais want the temple of Preah Vihear so much...I think we should sell it to them with one condition that they post the truth about the temple's history and origin.
Abhisit Vejjajiva, the sexiest?????
This guy looks so gay and fuckgly~~!!!
To Cambodians,
I am a Thai. Please not get Thais wrong. Abhisit is just a shit of Thailand. He wants to be the prime minister, so he trys to do everything to achieve his goal. He accuses that the minister has a benefit with Cambodia. But please not get Thais wrong. Many Thai professors who have profound knowledge in history say that the temple belongs to Cambodia, not Thailand. Many Thai people agree with that. The prime minister harshly criticizes Abhisit for trying to fuck up the relation between Thailand and Cambodia. But the media has never shown it. The prime minister comes from the grass roots of Thailand. But the media is owned by the middle class and the elites of Thailand. So, the media favors Abhisit and tries to makes up that Thai people are angry with the prime minister. This is a lie. If most Thai people had not liked the prime minister, they would haven't elected him. (Abhisit has been the candidate twice and he has lost all elections.) It's just a fucking politics of Thailand. And I would say that this is not the only political tool they use. If you follow Thailand's news, you will see that this fucking party of Abhisit always accuses that the party of the prime minister sells their lands to other nations such as Singapore and Burma. They just use this fucking nationalism to stir up people. I hope you understand. I am not less angry with Abhisit than you are.
Hey 8:06 PM,
I am sorry for what has boiled down this far. I understood that this guy Abhorshit is insane. As I have been told, many Thai/Siam has Khmer blood in them and understand the situation too. Sometime hitotry got twisted and spoiled the new gnerations. I have studied the history of Khmer/Cambodia they always got counter attack from both side YOUN and SIAM. But the Khmer seems to managed all and exist till today. If Khmer have the same thought as you Thai nowaday, we would go around and instigate our brothers that currently living in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam to wake up or rise up already. But seem today or this modern time is a new time for us Khmer to build up country we don't to have anything to do of bringing war again. Khmer needs peace. We have soo many wars we hardly develop country. We wasted our time almost half a century that brought Khmer backward. If we have peace and progress in our country would be really advance than anyone in this region. During the 60s Cambodia and Singapore is on the same line of living standard already. I've studied the history alot and the Khmer people are scatter all over Southeast Asia. With the population at least with the total of 50-60 millions. Khmer, Khmer-Mon, Khmer-Khom (Khmer below) Khmer-Loeur (upper Khmer), Khmer-surin, Khmer-issan, etc...And we proud to be Khmer and Khmer language still spoken until nowaday. You know it too, history will repeat and Khmer will be up there again. My grandfather used to tell me that the two neighboring countries never want to see Khmer strong, they said if let the Khmer strong will be the same as the Angkor period. Khmer very mighty. Don't get me wrong, the Thai's royal families or the Loung in their palace still and always speak, practice and preach Khmer's royal language. Though, the Thai's king could have Khmer's blood line in him. At the end, I hope this Abhorshit won't set up any flare to cause Khmer-Thai relation go sour. We are ready if there is war between us. Cause have been through this so many times already. I bet 100% Khmer will be behind this if war breaks out. Khmer will win.
To 8:05PM,
Good to hear that there's some people like you (8:05PM) from Thailand who may understand and side with the truth. Thanks for the understanding.
You may have already fully known that the people and nation of Cambodia do have enough of the sufferings in the past due to all the ills of the world including war, colonization, and internal conflict, and so on. We have managed to survive and experience the old and modern tastes of bitterness and sourness of the history. As a result, we want nothing but to live in peace, with dignity, with mutual respect—with people all over the world, especially with our neighbors.
We have learned and understand the history, and try to accept it with a big, though sore, heart. However, there are some part and pieces of the history so very sensitive between our countries that really need careful handlings in all manners. In dealing with this touchy-feely type of history, two things merit utmost attention at all times—Truth and Justice—in order for us to be able to move on side by side, though either maybes or not hand in hand. And I want Thai and Khmer to consider the truth and the justice fully and clearly.
Truth and justice, if and when both are achieved altogether, are the best of all scenarios. Thus, it’s most ideal to accept the truth and have justice.
Justice cannot be called justice without the truth or if and when achieved by means of no, exploited or manipulated truth. Hence, the truth is core and key to justice.
However, sometimes when the truth is recognized and accepted, it may subside if not entirely substitute the feeling of not having justice since it is understood that the means and the ways to achieve justice might be impossible or may mean endless bloodshed or mutual great loss particularly with regard to teritorial issues. And I know contemporarily civilized Cambodia and her people want just this simple humble reality—GIVE AND ACCEPT THE TRUTH.
........however, we want no war, my friend (8:54 PM)!
