With election campaigning underway, Prince Norodom Ranariddh said from exile Thursday the only way he could currently return to Cambodia was for his party to win the election.
"My return to Cambodia relies really on the result of the election," the prince told VOA Khmer. "The people of Cambodia, if they are willing to see me to go back home, and to help the country…the best way is to vote for NRP."
The Norodom Ranariddh Party, which splintered from the royal coalition party, Funcinpec, ahead of local elections in 2007, is one of 11 parties competing in July's national election, and the only one to be campaigning without its leader at the helm.
Speaking by phone from Kuala Lumpur Thursday, Prince Ranariddh compared himself to former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who, ousted and exiled by a coup, came back to Thailand following a victory of a supportive political party in elections in 2007.
"But the difference between Thakisn and myself, Thaksin will now apparently not make any politics any more, but Norodom Ranariddh will continue," Prince Ranariddh said.
Prince Ranariddh faces an 18-month prison sentence and $150,000 fine, for breach of trust, if he returns to Cambodia unpardoned.
The Cambodian People's Party is widely expected to dominate in July.

some people out there can remain in exile forever until time catches up with them. i don't think anyone on the planet can live forever as history have shown. good lucky. i think it is better to come home and help with national development etc, if they want to be remember as a good statesman. god bless cambodia.
I appeal to Rannarith to prove to his supporters that he is one of Nelson Mandela by coming into Cambodia and face with the reality. If he is a good man, he will dare to be arrested and be jailed. If he is really an innocense, his supporters will fight for him to be released. Mr Mam Sonando has been jailed twice. But he is still for strong for what he is believing. It is true that Takshin no longer in politic for the time being [5 years ban] but he decided to get back to his country so he can fight and clear his name from all charges while he was PM.
Hope that beloeved Prince could take such a step to clear his name and not telling his supporters to turn him in as guinea pig.
The lesson learned about Ranariddh, he is the most money hunger, major corruptions. No difference then the CPP.

He is one of the high-educated Cambodian men, but when it comes to talking about his personality and characteristic as a Khmer leader, he has none.
Well said 3.59 AM, it is about time to prove who he is whether he is a man of democratic processes,or once again only selfish attitude and asking cambodians for respect. Comparison's statement between him and Thaksin proves that he does not have a ground to stand on but opportunist as all stated above.

Not really, Somdach Euv had enough of Ranarith long ago. They both very independent people. Ranarith thinks he's a lot better and smarter than Somdach Euv because he got Phd from the mighty France.

If I am asked between ah cho m'ray Hun Kvack and Rannaridh, I will take a sleeping pill. And if I will be beatned up to answer, I rather kill myself. Neither one is good for Cambodia.
I knew Rannaridh too well, he has no feeling of compassion toward his people, and whoever supported him and spent all their wealth just to support him until become poor, Rannaridh saw nothing, and he never said thank you. In his mind is going after pretty girls and he won't stop. Rannaridh will lead the country into disaster and corrupt worse than ah Kvak.
Rannaridh and his big sister Bopha Devi are children of a former Apsara Dancer. Their mother was former Princess (Neak M'neang) Kanthol. She was sr'em & beautiful and full of charm, but was not a good mother to her children. She was busy with new men and new children after her broke up from King Sihanouk. She kept her anger alive and told her children what led her to break up from her first man (Sihanouk).
From 2 parents were not good parents, Rannaridh and his sister were wild and bad. Without their grand mother, Queen Kosamak helped them, these two would be whores, oh yea they are still whores except his sister is too old and now she has to stay with her last elderly husband Kheik Vandy.
This old whore Bopha Devi is no different from the oldest & youngest daughters of King of Thailand today who love to party dancing all night and sleeping around with handome husbands of every Thai women.
Rannaridh, a son of a whore. Rannaridh was so angry and accused his step mother as Youn, but when asked to prove, he shy away. His own mother ka-gnol married to a sino-khmer and even his own mother was half black Chinese already.
He betrayed all his supporters just for a piece of puzzy. Go back to France and stop coming back, you disgrace to all of us who supported you.
