A battle on two fronts

July 25, 2008
The Nation

Matichon ran a political analysis on its third page yesterday entitled, "The government's status amidst the conflict with Cambodia: a battle on two fronts".

It commented on how sensitive the Preah Vihear issue has become since Cambodia was successful in its bid to list the temple as a World Heritage Site at a meeting in Canada on July 7.

The conflict was not helped by groups within Thailand undermining one another by coming out to express differing views on the overlapping area covering the 4.6 kilometres adjacent to Preah Vihear Temple.

First, the difference in opinion was most notable in conflicting views expressed by the Democrat Party and those of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and Noppadon Pattama, the former foreign minister.

Secondly, there were the conflicting views between the Samak government and the People's Alliance for Democracy.

In short, below the surface of the conflict with Cambodia there was wide conflict among various domestic groups.

Matichon said this domestic conflict existed before the September 2006 coup. It started when Shin Corp decided to sell a majority stake to Singapore's Temasek Holdings. The target of the protests then was former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

But now the conflict issue has shifted to the reaction of whether Thailand has lost sovereignty relating to the Preah Vihear scandal, while the focus of the conflict is Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and Noppadon.

The dispute has expanded and spilled over and may threaten Thai-Cambodia bilateral relations.

The confrontation between the government and the Democrat Party, and the one between the government and the PAD and academics, ended up with Noppadon's resignation. The National Counter Corruption Commission then received a petition from a group of senators encouraging action against the government's decision to sign the Joint Communiqu้ between Thailand and Cambodia.

Besides, Cambodia has inflamed the conflict by decrying Thailand's moves to the United Nations and Unesco.

Matichon said that while Cambodia has proceeded aggressively, the Thai government has been behaving like a lame-duck administration. The country does not even have a foreign minister to take care of the case.

It said that the current government does not have the ability to deal with any conflicts, both those on the domestic front and international ones.

This battle on two fronts will thus be a very tough test for the Samak government to survive, the paper said.

That's right. Thailand should not argue any more. All Khmer wants is, return back their land. There will be no conflict and war.

No problem, if you can get the US to return the land to the UK, or at least, get Canada to return the land to France, Thailand will return all the land to Cambodia. How's that sound?

neither the U.S, nor Canada, French or the U.K own any of those land. In case of Khmer land, its already in Khmer country and control. You want to steal it you gotta come get it through the U.N which will just as impossible as UK getting back U.S or France getting back Canada. Get it?

Be realistic ok, we know that it is hard to ask you to give Bangkok and other Cambodian lands that now are under your teritory back to us; however, what we are saying that, don't try to steal our 4.6km-land from us again. Enought is enought. You what's happening to your coutry. Budha knows who is wright and who is wrong. That is your Karma. I advice you to learn more about your history before coming to this blog. How's that sound?

hey 2:26am, I think you've gotten backward; i don't you're Siamese by nature. But, anyway the Siamese labeled us Khmers -- "the savage race". Have you not known if you are Siamese that live on the Savage's land?

The American Indian, by nature the Siamese would labeled them as Savaged people. They are the one that owned the land you've mentioned. And those countries you listed have nothing to do with the North America Continent!

We should tell this thai troll to take his protest to Northeastern provinces. I'm sure he will be very welcome.

frankly, preah vihear has nothing to do with thailand and they should claim that it is theirs or whatever. the icj verdict has settled this 46 years ago. but no, the thai think it's in their best interest to ignore the icj verdict. that is the real problem with thailand, here. as long as thailand continue to ignore the icj verdict and ignore the treaty of 1907, cambodia will never agree with anything thailand is saying at the meetings or whatever.

overlapping boundary my ass!!! there is no more overlapping boundary since the treaty of 1907 and didn't the icj verdict told thailand that already? so, what is your problem?

i know, it's like me saying i don't like the traffic signal, so i have to run the red light. yeah, right! when i go to court i can tell the traffic court that i don't like the stop light, and guess what the judge will tell me? same concept with the treaty of 1907 and the icj verdict, here, thailand. educated your ignorant people to abide by it!!! get use to it!!!! law is law; irrelevant is your emotional feeling about it!!!

Stupid Issan dude again. Well, at least you did your homework about the Issan region, which is in the north eastern of Thailand. We Khmers don't want the dispute gets out hand either. So, the Thais solders should withdraw back the status quo before July 15. Of course, you guys will gain profits too from the listing of the temple. The secrete deal the Thailand and Cambodia did was to let Cambodia own the temple and the rich Thais can build hotels and Casinos to make money from tourists and gamblers. This is called joint development. You understand? You people living the region can come and visit as well. Don't worry, you have to pay the fee to get in.

From Khmer Issan living in Preah Vihear Province.

2:40, the UK used to own the US just as Cambodia used to own Thailand. If the US can return its land to the UK, Thailand would have no problem returning all of the land back to Cambodia. Do you think you can get the US to return all of its land to the UK? If not, tough luck, my friend.

3:46, stop being so nosy. It is none of your business who's getting rich or poor in Thailand on a Joint Development. The Khmer Leu in Thailand didn't have any problem with the Thai and asked you for help, did they?

You right, 3:29, but that doesn't mean Thailand can't petition the court to removed the useless traffic light, does it?

2:58, what are you talking about? You are a savage race when you used the Nazi to steal land and temple from Khmer people in Issan Province.

In the past, Khmer lost its land to Thai due to Khmer leaders listen to pathetic words of Thai leaders. In the war at Angkor, Khmer leaders sympathetically accommodate unfortunate, but deceitful, Thai army. Soon after that Khmer lost the war to Thai because of that blind sympathy. Khmer, once, kindly sent troop to help Thai fight with Burma. Soon after that, tired Khmer was destroyed by Thai. Later wars, Thai said Thai help Khmer to protect Khmer land from Vietnam invasion. But, Khmer lost more and more land to Thai.

Now, Thai seem to play that similar trick with Khmer Leaders. Thai leaders are whining that they have a lot of problem to solve. But, their god sack of problems, they INVADE Cambodia. Thai already won the first round of their trick. Postpone the petition with UNSC and next bilateral talk is the expense of Cambodian Interest.

Current Cambodian Leaders seems to fall into that trick and repeat the history.

Thai the real savage race! Why are u comparing the UK with Khmer? You have no arguement that's why ur just talking out ur ass. Greed will destroy ur country and we will not help u to rebuild. I hope lord shiva makes Thai death long and painful so they can understand the reality. We will push u back down if u try to get back up just like how ur animal race push us down preah vihear cliff during pol pot. Thai are animal, the real savage race!

4:10 AM...It is my business too because I have business near the area. What do you have? I am running a tour company from the Cambodia side so that people do not need to go from the Thai side.

I have import/export business between the two countries and others for generations, but what does that type of businesses has anything to do with making decision on how should the Khmer Leu profit from the temple, and how should they profited if they have a Lao spouse or Thai spouse? Are you sick?
