Border dispute a 'hard lesson' for Thai PM

07-25
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said he is optimistic that a border dispute with Cambodia will be resolved in high-level talks between the two nations next week.

Speaking to reporters as Thailand launched its 18-month chair of regional bloc ASEAN, Samak admitted the border dispute had severely tested his premiership. "My hardest lesson so far has been the Preah Vihear problem but I think we can defuse it somehow,'' Samak told reporters.

Thousands of Thai and Cambodian troops remain stationed on the border close to the 11th century Preah Vihear temple and talks held last Monday failed to resolve the dispute.

mr. samak, how else are you suppose to solve this problem if thailand chooses to ignore the treaty of 1907 and the icj verdict. i think if thailand play by the international law, then cambodia would have any problem with that. but no, thailand have their own self-interest and want cambodia to bend to that. i don't think so! it is in violation of the icj verdict and the treaty of 1907, to say the least. stop dreaming about owning cambodia's preah vihear already, then there will be no problem, then we can talk about solving bilateral issues etc..., however, before any talk on bilateral issues, thailand need to respect the icj verdict and the treaty of 1907. case closed.

what i think mr. samak can do to help this situation is to educate the thai people about the international law i.e. whether thai people agree with the law or not, they still have to accept the fact and respect the law, period. thailand can't just take international matter into their own hands like this. that is so unlawful and thailand will lose in the court of law. i'm telling you, thailand, stop this wishful, emotional ranklings because nothing you do will convince the UN, the icj, unesco, and cambodia to think like you. really!! get with the program already! god bless cambodia.

mr. samak, please educate your people that it's not just about thailand anymore; it's also is about cambodia as well because cambodia has the international laws in our hands and you don't. so, please educate you people because your are their prime minister and a public figure; don't just wait for your king to do it, you, mr. prime minister of thailand can do it as well to educate your people who otherwise had shown the world their ignorant in dealing with cambodia. the world has laws now, and thailand must respect the laws, irregard whether thailand agree or not. it's still is the law, hello!!!!

The Cambodian government should make the Thai government that the Treaty in 1907 is there to stay. Not respecting this treaty will result of Cambodia losing territory. This will be considered by Cambodia as declaration of war.

For example the US is not invalidating the treaty of Canada-US border because the British is not there anymore.

So the Siam should start act as a civilized country, because Cambodia will not tolerate any occupation of its territory mentioned in 1907 Treaty.

The ASEAN could not be nutral in helping to solve the tension on Preah Vihear and Thailand. Surin Pitsovann, who is now the Secretary General of the ASEAN, will of couse deal the current conflict with Bias. Other ASEAN members need to pay attention to and has to follw up each step and word of Surin Pitsovan if they don't want to lose credit of this Association. I don't understand the US position on this. Thais said at the ASEAN that this is the conflict of two brother countries that is not true at all. Thais tacticis just to avoid multi-lateral involvement which will be based on the legal approach which give more avantage to Cambodia. So they try as much as they can to avaoid or delay this approach by trying to fake evidence for international communities including the USA. Cambodia did asked ASEAN asssitance to help in this matter but it was blocked by Surin Pitsovann, who himself would become the Serectary General of ASEAN. The USA wgo push this matter back to the regional efforts have to help to ensure no bias in the solution so that you can maintain your leading roles in the world. Otherwise, you will face another way of losing credit again at this region. If you do not provide a fair comments for over 14 million of Cambodian people w\you will never able to convince Cambodia to respect your roles again.

I hope the world will have justice. Usually, the powerfull countries have never been based on the justice but based on their political, military and economy interest on the small country such as Cambodia. As the world has seen the recently historical lesson in Afganistan, Iraq and so on. If you need us you have to be fair.

It's obvious that the US is siding with Thailand, they have in interest there. But this should not matter, because it up to Hun Sen not to bow down from their pressure.

As long as it is against the verdict of ICJ in 1962 and the Treaty of 1907, there is nothing the Thai can do.

They just have to stick to these two things and the Thai has no choice but to withdraw.

Hun Sen should not do any compromise that might cause Cambodia to lose territory.

If they are not happy we go to the UN. If the UN still bias we go to the ICJ.

In fact it all come down to Hun Sen if he has already arrange thing with Samak behind the scene.

The game is over.

Unfortunately we have a guy that is ready to sell anything for money as leader.

It didn't surprise me a bit to see Thais respect no law. These former Khmer Rouge fighters are no joke, they are the cut throat, and they even dare to blow themselves up like the Muslims.

Khmers should fight the Thais and our Muslim brothers at South of Thailand should also attack Thailand at the same time.

I don't know why wait? Do it once and for all, teach these arrogant bastard Thais to learn the history.

Your comment really show who idiot you are.

If the next talk don't give any results.

The Thai government better have some pretty solid proofs to present to the UN.

This is you last chance to justify you invasion on Cambodia territory.

You don't even realize who deep the shit the Thai government is right now.
