Cambodia Plans To Build Hydro-power Plant On Mekong River

PHNOM PENH, July 5 (Bernama) -- The Cambodian government plans to build its largest hydro-power plant on the Mekong river in the country's northeastern province of Kratie, the Vietnam news agency (VNA) reported Monday.

The Sambo Chumrues plant, with a designed capacity of 2,600-MW, is also ranked as one of the largest in the southeast Asian region, Secretary of State to the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy Ith Prang was quoted by a local newspaper as saying.

Cambodia is pinning high hope on selling electricity to some neighboring countries as well in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region, if the plan leads to positive results.

Meanwhile, the news agency quoted Secretary of State Ith Prang as saying that the plan might help attract investors and help poor citizens have access to electricity at a cheap price.

The capacity of 2,600-MW is a blessing from God! Now it is possible for Cambodian people to switch to electric car and modernize Cambodia beyond the point of return!

That is a huge capacity, but we needed it, in order to control the price of electricity.

As a Cambodian people, I will never buy Thai products, I will never use Thai service or even visit Thai.

Thai is GREEDY to get Khmer Territory.

We had a very bad experience last year while we were visiting Thailand. Greedy and pretentious, the Thais are convinced of their superiority on Cambodia, even if they know very well that Thailand was wholly part of Cambodia and they owed everything to Khmer culture. Once the Sambor hydro plant will be built, we will have everything and Cambodia will rise once more and Thailand will ask to be part of a new Grand Cambodia again. The listing of Preah Vihear Temple as world heritage site by UNESCO is the first step in the right direction. Long live Cambodia!

what took so long already? if laos and others can do it on the mekong, why can't cambodia? this is most definately help to solve all the electricity needs for cambodia and surplus for sell to others outside of cambodia. yes, the kratie area stretch of the mekong river or tonle mekong or tonle thom in the khmer language is the largest of any along the entire length of the mekong river. plus, this stretch in kratie is the most shallow of has lots of rapids and tributaries and will make suitable place for a mega dam that will solve all electricity needs of cambodia. god bless cambodia.
