Cambodia plans to send laborers to Qatar

Cambodia plans to send unskilled Cambodian workers to Qatar as part of a labor agreement reached with the diminutive oil-rich state, the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training said yesterday.

“We are examining a memorandum of understanding [MoU] on manpower that we will implement immediately if it ensures our laborers’ safety and wellbeing,” said Labor Ministry Under Secretary of State Oum Mean.

He added that the workers will be able to learn new skills in Qatar, which has a population of just over one million. “And when they return, they can work towards building our nation.”

According to a recent Labor Ministry report, there are over 21,800 Cambodians working legally abroad, with 7,375 in Thailand, 11,852 in Malaysia, and 2,599 in South Korea. Cambodia and Qatar’s foreign ministers are still discussing how many workers would be sent to Qatar, according to the Labor Ministry.

Son Chhay, the chairman of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Commission, said he is concerned by another nation seeking unskilled Cambodian labor. “This kind of deal will not improve people’s living standards or the national economy,” he said.

The government must attract investors and create more employment domestically, he said. The Philippines sends almost half of its laborers abroad each year, said Son Chhay. “Yet it is poorer than Thailand and Malaysia.”

Minister of the Council of Ministers Sok An appealed June 12 for all universities to teach students skills appropriate to today’s demanding labor market, as the development of human resources is the backbone of national development.

Son Chhay is right when the government send unskilled workers to foreign countries, then tend to work less hard to make Cambodia an attractive country to invest or brush under the carpet. Cambodian people and children's future are not to be slaves or prostitutes for other countries.

To see Cambodia exporting their cheap labor to other countries showed that Hun Sen domestic economic policy is failing Cambodian people miserably!

I suggest that instead of sending dirt poor Cambodian people around the world and why not the factories from around the world to come to Cambodia encourage!

The other best suggestion is to create job market inside Cambodia through government, private, and public sectors and give the incentive to the employer to help train dirt poor Cambodian worker on the job or through apprenticeship and internship, or through private and public school!

Dirt poor Cambodian people don't need to travel a thousand mile away just to learn to do some manual labor just to learn some shit!

Oh well! What can I say because Hun Sen government is too corrupted to do anything right!

In Qatar they can learn skill pertaining to oil and natural gas industries.

If Cambodia is planning to have oil refinery (they should), we need these skills.

Bullshit! Do you even know what the hell you are talking about?

So what if these dirt poor Cambodian workers got the skill but Cambodia still doesn't oil and gas refinery and what is the use of the skill?

Tell you what! For any dirt poor Cambodian worker to acquire any essential skill to do the job the right way is through training facilities such as school! The fact is even after all these years of Hun Sen so called progress and Cambodian schools still produce students with third world education!

Cambodia is a third world nation lead by a leader who has third world education with a third world mentality and proudcing third world quality people! This is so sad for dirt poor Cambodian workers the more I think about it!

Cambodia doesn't have to have everything in order to catch up with the rest of the world! But what Cambodia must have is the right leaders with the first world mentality in order to catch up with the rest of the world!

i thin this is a good bilateral exchange program as those khmer people get to learn and gain much needed experience, not to mention they also earn a livelihood at the same time. remember, qatar is a rich country, and khmer who get to work there get paid, i'm sure.

look, cambodia is now starting to do this while many countries in the world like the philipines, thailand and many others have always send their people overseas to work in order to make some money. in turn these people send money home to help their family back at their home countries. so, it is a blessing in disguise for cambodia to be able to start doing this. plus, it is a bilateral agreement, so these workers are protecte by the laws, i'm sure. so, don't be so afraid to go and earn a good living, khmer people. do it for your self and your country, too. be smart and learn as much as you can while there because our country may someday look up to all of you to help it to develop and prosper further and further. so, travel and go see the world and learn and study hard. god bless cambodia and all our beautiful khmer people.

Obviously you guys didn't go to school for very long.

Because if you did you should know that student don't learn high tech. skills at school but in a company.

You don't become a master in a particular field by only going to school, but again in a company.

Don't be cocky, because your ignorance really show!!!

Are you saying that big Companies or corporations would hire any fool off the street to work for them without basic education? Ahhahhahahhah

It is up to the people (workers) go to school to learn the skill and if the Companies are kind enough and they will give the people (workers) an entry level position which is a grace period about 3-6 months on the job training to learn what on the job and other than that the people (workers) are fired if they can't perform on the job! It is funny to know that the job training with the Company is less than 6 month!

By the way, it would take people (workers) about 4-5 years to really master and specialize in their field!

Do you really think that big corporations or Companies have 4-5 years to train these people (workers)? You got to be kidding me!
