The Cambodian Election: It Is A Travesty Of Democracy

Opinion by Khmerization
28th July 2008

“The premature claim of victory by the CPP has a sinister connotation. It was a psychological war and was designed to divert the attention of the electoral observers in order to whitewash the electoral fraud, irregularities and vote-rigging.”
The yesterday’s election can be considered as smoother and better than the previous ones in the sense that politically-related violence is down, but it cannot be said that it is any fairer and freer when it comes to electoral rolls and vote-counting.
The opposition parties, non-governmental organisations and the people themselves have complained that thousands and thousands of eligible voters, a large majority of them are opposition voters, have been prevented from registering to vote or have been deleted from the voting lists just before the election. Half way on the election day, the opposition leader, Mr. Sam Rainsy, held a press conference to declare electoral irregularities when he claimed that more than 200,000 legible voters in Meanchey district of Phnom Penh were not allowed to vote because their names had been deleted from the electoral rolls. If Sam Rains’y claim is true, and those 200,000 people came forward, then this is a serious blow to the credibility of the election.
What should surprise many people is the premature claim of victory by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). Just less than two hours after the polling stations closed Mr. Khieu Kanharith, the CPP spokesperson, claimed that his party had won the election by gaining at extra 8 seats. This means that the CPP will win the 2/3 majority of 81 seats, exactly the numbers of seats that Chea Sim and Hun Sen had predicted nearly a year ago that the CPP will win. Mr. Chea Sim’s and Mr. Hun Sen’s prediction was so accurate, even more accurate than Nostradamus’s prediction, the famed French astrologer.
The premature claim of victory by the CPP has a sinister connotation. It was a psychological war and was designed to divert the attention of the electoral observers in order to whitewash the electoral fraud, irregularities and vote-rigging. But to many seasoned observers of the Cambodian elections, this premature declaration of a victory by the CPP should ring the alarm bell- that there might be a hidden agenda behind it. No one will doubt the CPP’s victory this time, but many people should doubt the CPP’s claims of a majority of 81 seats.
Up to this moment, many NGO’s had claimed that the CPP had just won 70 seats and the Sam Rainsy Party had won 50 seats. Mr. Yim Sovan, the MP from the Sam Rainsy Party, had claimed just 40 seats for his party.
Let’s hope that at the end of today, the trends would go the way the NGO’s claim, and not the CPP’s claim. If the CPP’s claim is to be believed, it would be a travesty of democracy in Cambodia. And I hope, whoever won the election, it should not affect the Siem Reap Talk today with Thailand to resolve the Thai occupation of the Preah Vihear's so-called "disputed zone".

Dear compatriots,

BRAINLESS RAVEN HUN XEN HAS FALLEN INTO THE FOX SIAM TRAP.
HE STARTS TO RENEGOCIATE WITH SAMAK.
WE MUST KNOW WHEN HUN XEN NEGOCIATES , HE ALWAYS NEGOCIATES FOR HIS OWN INTEREST BUSINESS, NEVER FOR OUR COUNTRY.
MORE HE NEGOCIATES, MORE WE LOSE OUR LAND.
KHMER PEOPLE OUTSIDE OR INSIDE THE COUNTRY MUST MAKE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT THAT ANY NEW LINE DRAWING OF THE MAP BY ANY NEW GOVERNMENT WON'T BE ACCEPTABLE AND WILL BE CONSIDERED AS A TREASON TO KHMER PEOPLE AND THAT GOVERNMENT MUST BE FORCED TO STEP DOWN.
STAND UP TOGETHER TO INVADER SIAM!

DEAR COMPATRIOTS,

AS I HAD GUESSED, HUN XEN HAS WAITED THE END OF THE ELECTION THAT HE IS SURE HE WILL WIN,TO RESTART THE NEGOCIATION WITH SAMAK THOUGH THE FUTURE NEGOCIATION IS BOUND TO FAIL IF KHMER GOVERNMENT DON'T MAKE SOME CONCESSIONS TO SIAM.
DEAR COMPATRIOTS, HE WILL SAY THAT THE AGREEMENT WOULD BRING US MORE LAND THAN BEFORE. (HE HAD CLAIMED THE SAME THING ABOUT THE SUPPLEMENTAL TREATY WITH YUON IN 2006, AND PUT OUR PATRIOTS IN THE PRISON FOR PROTESTATION AGAINST).

THE PTRIOTS WHO WILL DARE TO PROTEST THE NEXT AGREEMENT MUST EXPECT TO BE IN PREY SAR AGAIN.

HE SOLD OUR LAND TO SIAM TO EXPLOIT OUR TEMPLE WITH THAKSIN, SAMAK FOR HIS OWN BUSINESS INTEREST and let us starve to death..

HIS FIRST BETRAYAL WAS ON 11th NOVEMBER 2006
IN SIGNING THE SUPPLEMENTAL TREATY, HE HAD PAID TRIBUTE TO HIS YUON MASTER, OUR LAND, OUR ISLE KOH TRAL, OUR SEA!
THIS MAN IS A TRAITOR TO OUR NATION! WE WILL BE SOON CHAM AND KAMPUCHEA KROM.

REMOVE HIM BY VOTING OUR HERO SAM RAINSY IN THE 26 JULY ELECTION!

PAD fooling the people
The line was drawn by the French in 1904, the International Court of Justice ruled on it in 1962,

and the new line agreed by the Thai and Cambodian government actually brings more land into Thailand than the old map If the Cambodian government is happy to concede some land to the Thais while retaining the temple that is, and has always been, on Cambodian, soil, then it is a win for the Thai government.

6:48 Pm, you are very right. Hun Sen has no national conscience, only his own interests.

TO HUN XEN,

ANY JOINT DEVELOPMENT WITH SIAM WILL BE CONSIDERED AS THE BIG TREASON TO THE KHMER PEOPLE!

What is a sore losers? Everything has been won fair and square. Some irregularities has been expected as usual. In any case, you only need a few millions to determine the winner.

Your ever winner Hun Xen knows any tricks to win and to crush his own people,

but appears foolish and brainless facing yuon and siam.

FOUR MAJOR POLITICAL PARTIES REJECT ELECTION RESULTS

The undersigned political parties call on the Cambodian public opinion and the international community not to recognize the results of the July 27, 2008 elections which were manipulated and rigged by the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP).

The main illegal and fraudulent practices are related to deletion of countless legitimate voters' names and artificial increase in the CPP votes associated with 1018 forms issued by CPP-controlled authorities to illegitimate voters to cast their ballots for the CPP.

We call on the public opinion to condemn the tricks and maneuvers of the National Election Committee which is only a tool for the CPP to organize a sham election and present a façade of democracy.

FUNCIPEC PARTY: SISOWATH SIRIRATH

NORODOM RANARIDDH PARTY: MUTH CHANTHA

HUMAN RIGHTS PARTY: KEM SOKHA

SAM RAINSY PARTY: SAM RAINSY

My beloved Khmers!

Forgive me for once again speaking the same insane stupidity!

All major opposition parties, especially SRP, predictably have knew better that if they are united as one biggest party, they won't win the election from CPP. Why ain't they wanted to repeat their same mistake?

victory by deception is a dishonor; only fools like Hun Xen and his clique enjoy it.

there is no victory you just need to watch CCTV to see the many people who were turn away because they had no names. Most of them were elderly people who made this time to come far to vote. Shame on Hun Sen!

as you have known all along that they are living a country run by a dictator; those people are powerless.

In Mexico, it took almost a 100 years for democracy to prosper. I will take Cambodia about the same time to prosper. When all the old crook dies and the new arise.

Khmerization shut up. You aren't even in Cambodia and write a comment on how the election went using second-hand information. You are, like many of the people on KI-Media, just a sorry little aneke chooun KHmer who watches things from afar instead of taking things into your hands and do something. If you guys love your home country so much, why don't you go back?

The numbers of projected seats and the landslide victory that the CPP are is boasting is attributed to the success of the CPP and the failure of all the opposition parties.

I am not a CPP supporter nor an I am activist for any the opposition parties. I make decision based on an educated guess that are best for my Khmer nation.

As I see it, I don't agree with everythng that the CPP does, but you have to give them credit for holding their party together over time and stabilize the country, which is crucial for any development to proceed. If you recall, the 60s was a time that Cambodia prosper becasue it was stable and allow development to take root before the Vietnam war spilled over.

For there is as much success for the CPP, there is an equal part of failure from the oppositions. They have the same goal of challenging the CPP, but they failed to united for long term good of the country.
They still have not learn from their past mistake with the Son Sann party, FUNCIPEC, SRP, etc... All are a little too arrogant that they alone can challenge the CPP machinery.

I am not happy on how the CPP dominated all the media outlets and to some extend manipulated the ballot boxes where some voters cannot vote, but becuase the oppositions failed to have united front, they lack the resources to convey the messages accross the country.

Since Khmer have so many recent bad experiences, they will vote for whoever has given them better lives from the previous years/terms. They see this as progress and that's how most people see things in this world.

For now, I will support whoever is running the country as long as we as a country can take care of the people and protect out national interest. For a regime like the CPP,facing them heads on is a loosing proposition. You have to work from within to make the changes.

8:51PM what the fuck your educated guest with no knowlede at all! you fucking Vietnamese PHD!

Anonymous said...

In politics, there's no such a thing as 'God help'. The practical method is doing bad gets good while doing good loses.

Anonymous said...

You don't need to be that arrogant at what I said if you are well educated; you know how fast the media spreads the news worldwide today? And I don't claim to have a PHD.

Anonymous said...

Oh and what level of knowledge do you have? You come up talking arrogantly just like Hun Xen does. Are you related to him by blood?

Anonymous said...

I'm not a Vietnames PHD. This is where one failed to realize that because you criticise an oppsitions and praising the CPP a little, then you are Vietnamese. This is nonsense. Educated guess is where one start and that's the base of our knowledge to build on. Grow up and pay attention and you might learn something in the process.

Why Mr.Bush Win the Election for the section term? and Why the CPP Win again? Please think!!!
It's time to build strong Foundation of our Nation,Please let's the light shine every corner of our land.Let's show the World that the Kingdom of Cambodia has magic....

I completely got lost right here; I answered to 9:44PM who fucked me earlier. I just told him that I did not claim to have a PHD; and he does not need to show his arrogant gesture to me. I am one of the supporters of the SRP or HRP, but I'm not an active member of either party, and I never praise Hun Xen for the rest of my life. What the hell is wrong, dudes?

Anonymous said...

My beloved 8:51PM!

Forgive me for only agreeing with you that all the oppositions parties repeatedly failed to unite for the long term good of the country...

During 40's to 60's regime was not entirely different from CPP, one man show... that was exclusively brought the nation into the earthly hell.

CPP win but by cheating at registration and at vote-counting. Cheating at counting is the most easy way to win and that's what the CPP and NEC did.

Guys,

Top be fair to voters,
