Phnom Penh - Cambodian sex workers prayed for divine intervention at the ancient temple of Angkor Wat to draw attention to their objections to new laws they said equate sex work with trafficking, local media reported Friday.
The English-language Mekong Times daily pictured a group of more than 20 sex workers brandishing Barbie dolls and lotuses in prayer at the temple in Siem Reap province, more than 300 kilometres north-west of Phnom Penh.
The group chose Angkor, the largest religious monument in the world, 'because we want the spirit of our ancestors ... to make our leaders and local and foreign tourists listen to our voices,' the paper quoted Soo Sitheavy, one of the organizers, as saying.
Thousands of sex workers have been rounded up by authorities since a revised anti-trafficking act that made soliciting sex illegal went into effect earlier this year.
Cambodians consider Angkor Wat the birthplace of their civilization, and it is also featured on the national flag.

KI I have to disagree with you on this. And if Hun Sen is what causing this status, I will vote for Hun Sen for next term. Why should I vote a man out who is cleaning the streets and moral sewer of Cambodia?
He doing the right thing by classifying this as trafficking. Sex working is a legacy of popularize by the foreign democratization of our country. They corrupted our cultures.
I think if you meant to say that, these woman would not have been a sex slave, working in depraved and degrading condition if they have proper employment and skills, which the current government is a total failure to that development then I agree. But if your title is meant what you say, i think you our out of your mind and helping to degrade Khmer culture
Cambodian sex workers pray for divine intervention [-All they had to do is to vote Hun Sen out of power].
Socheat;
Well, it is another interesting title you have made it here.
So, you are really think that the Hum Sen administration is an obstacle to the legalize of this particualr business and have nothing to do with our tradition and culture.
I do understand that people in USA, they are opposing to any stauncy night club or adult shop located near by the school or community where are objecting to such a thing.
And I strongly believed and I would bet with you that all the current political parties, in particular the SRP will not publicly say yes "I will legalize the trade" as I know for fact that Mrs. Mu Sohua will not support such a move.
You fools above the issue here is not about allow to have sex business for business people and corrupted culture! It is about poor helples people that get no kind of help by goverment instead just to turned them to criminal just to be unlucky and poor!
This about the unjustice, iresponsible, and uncare of Ah Hun Xen CPP corrupted goverment!!!!
