Cambodians are dancing to celebrate the listing of Preah Vihear as a World Heritage Site

Translated from Khmer by Heng Soy

While Thai demonstrators are protesting in Thailand in front of the Preah Vihear temple to oppose the listing of Preah Vihear temple as a World Heritage site, on the Cambodian side, a report indicated that Cambodians are dancing in joy after they learned the good news about Preah Vihear temple. The Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper reported that Cambodian civilians and officials are gathering in solidarity not to curse the Thai protesters, but to dance in joy on the steps leading to Preah Vihear temple, and this dancing activities had been going on for several nights already, ever since they started to hear the good news from the UNESCO meeting in Quebec city. The Cambodian Council of Ministers indicated that to alleviate the hardships of Cambodian officials based in Preah Vihear temple, the council sent packaged noodles, sardines, fish sauce, MSG, cigarettes, raincoats, and several tents to them because of the constant rains in that area. Cambodian villagers in Preah Vihear also received large quantities of food donations from generous donors from Phnom Penh and other provinces after the border gate was closed in the past several days (preventing them to cross into Thailand to buy food).

With this UNESCO listing victory, and the previous 1962 World court victory, Preah Vihear is Khmer forever. These are the 2 famous World bodies. The Thai PAD and the Democratic party claim that they will go back to court again to reclaim Preah Vihear. These Thai lunetics will find out the hard way.

Many Thanks to H. E. Sok An (our 2008 UNESCO winner). And of-course Many Thanks to Samdech Sihanouk (our 1962 World Court winner case).

History of the Ah Nan Chao Siems. The Khmer should all condemn Ah Nan Chao Siems who invaded and took over Khmer territory.

"The Tai People: Origins and Migrations

The ancestors of the modern Thai were Tai-speaking people living south of the Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) on the mountainous plateau of what is now the Chinese province of Yunnan. The first Chinese records about the Tai as southern barbarians is dated sixth century B.C.

The state of Nanchao played a key role in Tai development. In the mid-seventh century A.D., it was the ally of the Chinese Tang Dynasty. However, Nanchao became a powerful foe of the Chinese in subsequent centuries and extended its domain into what is now Burma and northern Vietnam.

In 1253 the armies of Kublai Khan conquered Nanchao and incorporated it into the Yuan (Mongol) Chinese empire.

Nanchao's significance for the Tai people was twofold. First, it blocked Chinese influence from the north for many centuries. Had Nanchao not existed, the Tai, like most of the originally non-Chinese peoples south of the Chang Jiang, might have been completely assimilated into the Chinese cultural sphere. Second, Nanchao stimulated Tai migration and expansion. Over several centuries, bands of Tai from Yunnan moved steadily into Southeast Asia, and by the thirteenth century they had reached as far west as Assam in present-day India.

Once settled, they became identified in Burma as the Shan and in the upper Mekong region as the Lao.

In Tonkin and Annam, the northern and central portions of present-day Vietnam, the Tai formed distinct tribal groupings: Tai Dam (Black Tai), Tai Deng (Red Tai), Tai Khao (White Tai), and Nung.

However, most of the Tai settled on the northern and western fringes of the Khmer Empire.

The Thai have traditionally regarded the founding of the kingdom of Sukhothai as marking their emergence as a distinct nation. Tradition sets 1238 as the date when Tai chieftains overthrew the Khmer at Sukhothai, capital of Angkor's outlying northwestern province, and established a Tai kingdom.

A flood of migration resulting from Kublai Khan's conquest of Nanchao furthered the consolidation of independent Tai states. Tai warriors, fleeing the Mongol invaders, reinforced Sukhothai against the Khmer.

In the north, other Tai war parties conquered the old Mon state of Haripunjaya and in 1296 founded the kingdom of Lan Na with its capital at Chiang Mai."

Khmer History for all Ah Khmer Issan.

After the death of Jayavarman VII, his son Indravarman II (reigned 1219-1243) ascended the throne. He continued the legacy of successful temples builder, but as a warrior he was less successful.
In the year 1220, Indravarman II ordered the Khmer troops to withdraw from many of the provinces previously conquered from Champa. In the west, his Thai subjects rebelled, established the first Thai kingdom at Sukhothai in 1238 and pushed back the Khmer. In the following 200 years, the Thais would become the chief rivals of Kambuja. Indravarman II was succeeded by Jayavarman VIII (reigned 1243-1295). From the outside, the empire was threatened in 1283 by the Mongols under Kublai Khan's general Sagatu. The king avoided war with his powerful opponent, who at this time ruled over all China, by paying annual tribute to him. Jayavarman VIII's rule ended in 1295 when he was deposed by his son-in-law Srindravarman (reigned 1295-1309). In August of 1296, the Chinese diplomat Zhou Daguan arrived at Angkor, and remained at the court of king Srindravarman until July 1297.
There are few historical records from the time following Srindravarman's reign. The last known inscription on a pillar is from the year 1327. After 1352, another Thai kingdom, Ayutthaya, repeatedly assaulted on Kambuja, but the Thais were were repelled. In 1431, however, the Thai army conquered Angkor. There are indications that Angkor was not completely abandoned. One line of Khmer kings would have remained there, while a second moved to Phnom Penh to establish a parallel kingdom. The final fall of Angkor would then be due to the transfer of economic - and therewith political - significance, as Phnom Penh became an important trade centre on the Mekong. Costly construction projects and conflicts over power between the royal family sealed the end of the Khmer empire. King Barom Reachea I (reigned 1566 - 1576), succeeded in driving back the Thai, the royal court briefly returned to Angkor. By this time however, the Khmer penchant for monument building had ceased. Following the abandonment of the Angkorian sites, the Khmer established a new capital, Lovek, several hundred kilometers to the southeast on the site of what is now Phnom Penh. This new center of power was located at the confluence of the Mekong and the Tonle Sab rivers. Thus, it controlled the river commerce of the Khmer heartland.
Under the rule of King Sattha, the Thais conquered Lovek in 1594. The Thais marched thousands of Khmer peasants, skilled artisans, scholars, and members of the Buddhist clergy back to their capital of Ayutthaya. A new Khmer capital was established at Odongk (Udong), south of Lovek. Thailand installed Khmer king, Ang Eng (1779-96) was installed as monarch at Odongk by Thai troops. At the same time, Thailand quietly annexed Cambodia's northernmost provinces. In addition, the local rulers of the northwestern provinces of Batdambang and Siemreab (Siemreap) became vassals of the Thai king, and these areas came under the Thai sphere of influence.
By the early seventeenth century, the Vietnamese had reached the Mekong Delta, which was inhabited by Khmer people. In 1620 the Khmer king Chey Chettha II (1618-28) married a daughter of Sai Vuong, one of the Nguyen lords (1558- 1778), who ruled southern Vietnam for most of the period of the restored Le dynasty (1428-1788). Three years later, Chey Chettha allowed the Vietnamese to establish a custom-house at Prey Nokor, near what is now Ho Chi Minh City (until 1975, Saigon). By the end of the seventeenth century, the region was under Vietnamese control, and Cambodia was cut off from access to the sea. In addition, the Vietnamese annexed sizable areas of contiguous Khmer territory in the region of the Mekong Delta. Thailand and Vietnam renewed their struggle for control of Cambodia in the nineteenth century.
After two years of fighting, Cambodia and its two neighbors reached an accord that placed the country under the joint suzerainty of Thailand and Vietnam. In their arbitrary treatment of the Khmer population, the Thai and the Vietnamese were virtually indistinguishable. The suffering and the dislocation caused by war were comparable in many ways to similar Cambodian experiences in the 1970s. In 1863, French established a protectorate over Cambodia and contained the Thais and the Vietnamese.

You represent the mighty of ancient Khmers and the present-day Khmers forever.

We have always struggled under any circumstances to preserve you to be Khmers in face of the ambitions of expansionists, imperialists, hegemonists.

Justice and reality appear just the right time.

We dance and We laugh, but do not drop our vigilance.

UNESCO decision is just a small lesson to the THAIS and VIETNAMESE.

WE WILL GET BACK WHAT USED TO BE OURS IF WE REUNITE. Step by Step.

THAIS and VIETNAMESE always want to destroy Khmers politically, economically, militarily, culturally, and especially the Khmer race.

When Khmers are weak, Khmer will never have chance of reuniting the KAMPUCHEA KROM and part of the territory illegally occupied by the the THAIS.

KHMER REUNITE TO BE STRONGER.

PAD fooling the people
I cannot believe the lunatics at the PAD have actually got the Thai people and the Puea Pandin party fooled over the Preah Vihear temple.

The line was drawn by the French in 1904, the International Court of Justice ruled on it in 1962,

“and the new line agreed by the Thai and Cambodian government actually brings more land into Thailand than the old map.

If the Cambodian government is happy to concede some land to the Thais while retaining the temple that is, and has always been, on Cambodian soil, then it is a win for the Thai government.”

This is just another example of the PAD stirring up issues trying to validate its existence. The fact that Puea Pandin party has weighed into it is disappointing; you would expect them to know better.

As for the Democrats, I hope they find the same demise the Australian Democrats recently have. Throwing stones at the government is good fun, but if you are never going to get a chance to run the country then it's a choice you can make without fear of having to prove you can do a better job.

The last Australian Democrats were voted out in November from the Senate and, as of July 1, the Democrats will be dead in Australia. Hopefully, the Thai Democrats will become history in the near future.

---------------------
Nationalist bombast a little too late

I don't know what possesses the Thais lately who have started reclaiming the Cambodian Preah Vihear temple, 46 years after an international tribunal awarded it to Cambodia.

Anyone with more than a bird's brain will surely understand that this temple is clearly Cambodian (ever visited the site and compared it to Angkor?) and realise it is rather late to fire up their nationalistic bombast in order to get back the temple, as a spoilt brat would do.

By the way, the disputed 4.6 square kilometres around the site represents less then 0.01% of Thailand's territory.

As if common sense weren't enough to let the issue drop, just imagine the damage this whole issue could do to the relationship with Cambodia and the backlash from the international community, where Thailand already commands very little respect.

Wake up and don't politicise the issue to topple the government. The current administration hasn't done a lot lately, but their handling of the temple issue should probably be the least of the Thai people's worries.
