A government official injured in an acid attack in Phnom Penh Sunday was sent for treatment in Thailand, but his condition is not critical, a top police official said Monday.
Ngor Srun, a Cambodian People's Party secretary of state for the Council of Ministers, was attacked Sunday afternoon as he had a flat tire changed on his car on Kampuchea Krom Boulevard, Phnom Penh Police Chief Touch Naroth said.
Ngor Srun was treated for several hours at Calmette Hospital and sent to Thailand around 4 pm Sunday afternoon, hospital officials said.
Police will begin an investigation, even though there has been no charges pressed by the victim or his family, Touch Naroth said.
Neither suspects nor motive have been identified, and no one has come forward as a witness, making an investigation difficult, Touch Saroth said.
Ngor Srun was injured on his face and chest, though the injuries were not critical, Touch Naroth said.
Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, confirmed the attack and the victim's government position, but he declined to give further details.
Prampi Makara District Governor Srun Sroan said he would push for further investigation, but he could not release more information because none had been provided by the family.
Kek Galabru, president of the rights group Licadho, said the case was likely related to a personal conflict.
The use of powerful acids to attack personal rivals is not uncommon in Cambodia. At least eight people, including six men, have been killed in such attacks since 1999, with about 90 men and 90 women reporting attacks, according to Licadho.
Sunday's assault was the first acid attack on a government official and came two days after the shooting murders of an opposition newspaper reporter and his son in Phnom Penh.

why prominent cambodian people have to seek medical treatment in thailand or vietnam is beyond any imagination. perhaps this is a wake-up call for cambodia to strengthen its healthcare system more to international standard like in thailand and vietnam. that said, however, medical emergency has no boundary or border. like in europe, they like to call that "medicine without border", or "friends without borders", or "business without borders", etc... my law, people in this profession, universally speaking, are taught to save lives, not take away lives. if they want to maintain good reputation, they better not do something that is against their medical profession ethics. god bless cambodia.
that's a separate issue altogether.

But for sur ah Scam Rainsy would not dare to hit our strong man PM!
Only group of Scan Rainsy can lift up morality amoung leadership of Cambodian. At present all leaders of Cambodian are compared to animal like species because they cannot distinguish between good and bad. They use killing as a game to scare their opponents. Therefore without group Scam Rainsy, Cambodian parliament would be a farm of animals.

I agree! Cambodia hospitals are substandard, dinky, and dirty!
This is the 21 century and Cambodia still doesn’t have a decent hospital to serve Cambodian people and it is such a shame on AH HUN SEN government!
I believe the reason AH Ngor Srun still want to go to Thailame or Vietname is because he thinks that he can afford the very best service for his money! Believe it or not and each year Cambodian people and officials spend a lot of money in Thailame and Vietname for healthcare! It is amazing to me when Cambodia is still a dirt poor country and yet Cambodian people are willing to spend so much money in Thailame and Vietname just for something that is not even life threatening!
I just hope that when AH Ngor Srun return back to Cambodia and he won't become the instrument of the Thaicong policy!
That is not good. Who's going to save the monkeys that is going to fall from the Preah Vihear's 600 meters cliff?
It means Cambodia:
Poor country, poor education,
poor politicians, poor people,
and poor hospital standard.
Got it?
this is a wake-up call for cambodia to have international standard of healthcare system, so its prominent citizens don't have to go to thailand or vietnam like in the past for seeking medical treatment. have it right here in cambodia! god bless cambodia.
