If ASEAN is not willing to help mediate the border dispute with Thailand, why couldn't Cambodia push for UNSC resolution?

Asean Chairman told Cambodia not to push the border dispute with Thailand too far beyond bilateral and regional forums since it could harm the Asean stand.

Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo said in a letter to Cambodia's Foreign Minister Hor Namhong that the issue should not be push to the United Nations Security Council.

"The parties concerns are too quick to resort the matter to the UN Security Council. This would do harm Asean standing and actually make the resolution be more difficult," Yeo said in his letter.

Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said in Phnom Penh that at the request of Phnom Penh, the UN Security Council plans to hold an emergency meeting next Monday to discuss measures to help the two countries resolve a military standoff over the Preah Vihear and its vicinity.

The meeting is scheduled after the Cambodian ambassador to New York asked in his letter to the presidents of the U.N. Security Council and the General Assembly for the UN to organise the meeting.

Hor Namhong earlier wrote to Yeo, who is the current Asean chairman, asking him to activate a contact group to help mediate row with Thailand on the border stand off in the border area near the Preah Vihear.

"The proposal (of contact group) found favour with a number of Foreign Ministers, but there was also a general view that the bilateral process should be allowed to continue, and there is still no consensus for the formation of such a group," Yeo said separately in his statement.

I don't give a fuck about ASEAN standing in the world when the ASEAN can't even talk about some of its member who is breaking international law and violating sovereignty of other ASEAN members and who are readily willing to use military force more than peaceful diplomacy!

Hey! If Cambodia has ATOMIC BOMB and Cambodia wouldn't even ask the ASEAN or United Nations for help!

Any resolution to the Thaicong-Cambodian conflict must involve third party and through the third party involvement will ensure Cambodia endless supply of weapons to fight the Thaicong aggressor until they withdraw their troop from Cambodia!

ASEAN is a joke

ASEAN is a paper tiger. As a group, they will never be affective in managing the regional conflict because of their "non interference" policy in the members state. In her effort to try and avoid war, Cambodia is within her legal right to go the UN becuase of the blatan and arrogan vilation of Cambodian territory by the Thai. Cambodia need peace, but the neigbors such as Vietnam and Thai keeps on causing trouble for us. As a nation, going to the UN is the correct course of action. We have nothing to loose in this regard.

thailand can't tell cambodia what to do or not to do. the bottomline is thailand violated the treaty of 1907 that forms the borderline of cambodia and siam.

all the bias thai reports i read, as always, fails to mention the lawful treaty that was signed by both party. instead, their bias reports often tend to distort the this fact saying unlawfully like thailand disagree with the treaty. well, of course, thailand will disagree with any treaty if it not benefiting them directly. however, that said, don't choose to ignore the law, because in the court of law, when one chooses to ignore or disrespect the law or rule of the treaty that was officially signed into law, then the court will rule against you. that's the reason why thailand lost the icj verdict because, like i said here, thailand chose to ignore or disrespect the law. and the same pattern is still continued by thailand as we see things unfold today right in front of our faces. nothing new, my dear!!!

again, thailand ignore and disrespect the rule of law; and forget the thai map of the preah vihear borderline area. for one, it is so unilaterally redrawn as they said they disagreed with the icj verdict that used the 1904 -1907 treaty with siam, the map of that era was clearly lawful as both countries signed and officially ratified it. and siam chose to disrespect it because not all their siem thugs people agree with it, however, their gov't i.e., the people in charge of their country, signed it and ratified it into lawful treaty with cambodia. and they later chose to ignore this same treaty and disrespect it to the point of unilaterally redraw the map to make it look like their border is at the gate of preah vihear. how illegal can that be? again, thailand is now afraid of the scrutiny as cambodia pushes the offensive by using the law. watch, thailand is very wary of this as they know they will lose again, this time in a big, modern way. cambodia will prvail. god bless cambodia.

I agree that took the issue to UN are the right place and the right thing to do. Supalak Ganjankhundee as a bias Bangkok Post continue not to report the fact that Thai army are on Khmer soil and Thai officials, time again and again they want to negotiate bilateral. First of all there is nothing to be negoniate. We talked and fail because they used their self drawing map.

Thai is not happy we took the issue to the UN. A criminal doen't want who rob doen't the owner take the issue to the polce-it is bad for them.

For ASEAN, forget about this organization. A do no good, it is a waste of time and money. Name one thing of this organization that do something worthy. One of its member, Thailand, sent its troop to Khmer soil, invaded Khmer temple, violated Khmer land and Buddhist teaching (no one allow to bring arm, less alone riffles, hand grenard to the temple), and what is that telling you about ASEAN. Burma, killed its own people, jail the nobel price peace winner for ages, what has the ASEAN done-nothing! Their whole principle charter: "Non-interference...Internal mater..." What is the point of having this organization anyway? If you are not step in when one of your member committed astrocity on any human being, step in and if one of your member steal the land, send arm soldiers to another country, step in and say-no no no, that is wrong, pull out now. And what has this ASEAN has done for this Thai invasion on Khmer land? Nothing, but whinning!!! Wah wah wah...Show some teeth, do something worthy as an organization. The world is watching you. Khmer is waiting... and waiting...and waiting...

Supalak Ganjankhundee, I am sorry that I stated on previous comment that you were from Bangkok Post. I should have stated that you were from "THE NATION"

Sincerely yours,

Fuck the UN. And fuck the ASEAN. Both of these clowns are useless.

Why the Cambodia bothered to join the ASEAN club. I've never seen a loser club like this one.

I think it's time for the Cambodia to enlist military recourse from Vietnam and China. After all, we all brothers.

Warning: watch out invaders.

The Siam government want Cambodia territory and the ASEAN want us to reason with them.

It's easy to say when it's not they territory that is in jeopardize. The Siam has nothing to lose, we do.

Hun Sen keep push on the UN, we don't give away our territory.
