An Indian tycoon has reportedly put in an order to buy 100,000 tons of Cambodia's rice for distribution in his own country and various other countries.

The provincial governor of Banteay Meanchey, Ong Oeurn, says the unnamed Indian tycoon will buy the rice from the province at the end of this year.

The buyer wants another 500,000 tons in 2009-2010 and about one million tons in 2010-2011.

Ong Oeurn says Banteay Meanchey province produced a surplus of about 190,000 tons of rice in 2007, so it can fulfill India's request.

The Mekong Times quotes the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Chan Sarun, as saying India's request to buy the rice is not a problem.
