More talks planned on temple row

Thursday, 24 July 2008
BBC News

Cambodia says it will hold off referring a territorial dispute with Thailand to the UN, after the two sides agreed to hold further talks.

Foreign ministers will meet in the Cambodian city of Siem Reap on Monday to discuss the row over Preah Vihear temple, both sides confirmed.

Hundreds of troops remained camped out near the 11th Century hill-top site on their mutual border.

Previous talks between the two sides have failed to resolve the dispute.

"I talked with [Cambodian] Prime Minister Hun Sen a while ago and we agreed that our foreign ministers will hold a meeting in Siem Reap on 28 July," Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej told journalists.

"Prime Minister Hun Sen also told me that he will withdraw the issue from the United Nations," he said.

A new Thai foreign minister will be appointed for the talks, Mr Samak said. The previous one, Noppadon Pattama, was forced to resign over the issue.

Cambodian Information Minister Khieu Kanharith confirmed his side would "postpone the complaint to the Security Council".

Backlash

The troop build-up at Preah Vihear began on 15 July.

An international court awarded the temple to Cambodia in 1962 but land surrounding it remains the subject of rival territorial claims.

A decision by Unesco earlier this month to list the temple as Cambodia's second World Heritage Site triggered a nationalist backlash from some groups in Thailand.

Thai troops moved into an area both sides claim more than a week ago, after Cambodian guards arrested three Thai protesters there.

Since then, both sides have increased their military presence. Several thousand troops are now reported to be in and around the temple area.

But so far the stand-off has remained peaceful and the atmosphere calm at the temple area.

AH George Yeo fails to learn to from Cambodian history in the 1980! Cambodia was invaded in 1979 by the communist Vietnam with the support of the Soviet Union! Communist Vietnam has the fourth largest army in the world and it is Cambodian people who bear the brunt of the Vietnamese invasion for 10 years and nobody understand the issue of invasion more than Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people!

AH George Yeo and his ASEAN members including the Thaicong aggressor need to stop talking by showing some action now in trying to diffuse and to contain the Thaicong-Cambodian conflict as soon as possible because more talking won't lead to nowhere and the Thaicong government chose to act in defiant of international law and order!

The memory of invasion is still fresh on Cambodian people mind and Cambodian leaders will not take any invasion lightly because Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people had been through it all! So for the Thaicong-Cambodian conflict to be solved the ASEAN must change their mindset in trying to understand how the Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people perceive the world! It is no surprise that it is Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people who are the one that want to end this conflict as soon as possible that is why Cambodian urge to the third party(UN) to get involve and ended this conflict quickly before it is getting out of hand!

The are is no point of blaming Cambodia for being a victim of Thaicong aggression or even past Vietcong aggression which led to invasion of Cambodia in 1979!

Cambodia should be strong and dont be fault by Thai flipflop talking.
I believe that the next meeting will be just the same result. If we hold or withdraw the request, do you believe this shameless Thai again going to accept the ICJ's verdict.

Cambodians act like a crown.
They think they can do anything.
They accuse Thais of trespassing into their territory, while in fact, Thais are in Thai territory.

They ignore bilateral talks, and jumping over ASEAN to file a complaint to UN.

Cambodians only make themselves look like a baby, by falsely accusing other and don't respect the regional organization they are membered in (ASEAN).

Their childish act only disgraces themselves and ASEAN.

Again, they will re-elect Hun Sen (again??) on this July 27, that only confirms that the Cambodians are helpless, thoughtless, and can't act like a decent grown up.

They love to disgrace themselves helplessly.

To 12:33AM

Cambodian people were already on Khmer land since the begin of time including their temple and their monks and now the Thaicong government only begin to move the Thaicong troop onto Khmer land and demanded to have bilateral talk steal what belong to Cambodian people!

This show that Thailame is a terrorist country that wants to create war and instability in the world!

International community must not and will not accept any terrorist country in anywhere in the world because it is an act of a coward who is willing to force more than peaceful diplomacy!

No need to reason with the Thaicong terrorist!

Not to say that this will do any good in stealing the temple from Khmer People in Issan Province, but at least Cambodia doesn't look like wild animals by agree to bilateral talk.

Stupid Issan dude again. Well, at least you did your homework about the Issan region, which is in the north eastern of Thailand. Issan Province does not exist. Only Preah Vihear Province does. We Khmers don't want the dispute gets out hand either. So, the Thais solders should withdraw back the status quo before July 15. Of course, you guys will gain profits too from the listing of the temple. The secrete deal the Thailand and Cambodia did was to let Cambodia own the temple and the rich Thais can build hotels and Casinos to make money from tourists and gamblers. This is called joint development. You understand? You people living the region can come and visit as well. Don't worry, you have to pay the fee to get in.

From Khmer Issan living in Preah Vihear Province.

Cambodia no need a negotiation with Thailand because preas vihea is belonged to Cambodia from the past to present. Negotiation meaning the agreement point which Cambodia lost some of its land to Thaicong. Let the UN protect Camnodia rather the present government. Stop earning the benifit from Cambodian votes for losing Cambodian land.
THAILAND PLEASE STOP TEACHING THE FALSE HISTORY TO YOUR CHILDREN.
