Ruling Cambodian party whitewashes opposition at polls

Phnom Penh - The dominant Cambodian People's Party (CPP) extended its lead Monday after weekend national elections, claiming 90 of the 123 seats in the National Assembly - 64 more than its nearest rival.

Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said counting was ongoing but the CPP had good preliminary figures on which to base its estimate.

'At this stage, the CPP has 90 seats, the Sam Rainsy Party has 26, then Funcinpec has two, the Norodom Ranariddh Party two and the Human Rights Party three, but these are not final figures,' he said Monday.

The biggest loser appeared to be the royalist Funcinpec Party, which has continued a downward slide since winning the 1993 elections despite sacking its disgraced former leader, Prince Norodom Ranariddh, last year.

Ranariddh, in exile in Kuala Lumpur after being found guilty of making a private sale of Funcinpec's multimillion-dollar headquarters and being sentenced to 18 months in jail in absentia, set up his own eponymous party.

Funcinpec spokesman Ork Socheat declined comment on the royalists' terrible showing, saying he was out of town.

Before Sunday's polls, the CPP held 73 seats, Funcinpec 26 and the Sam Rainsy Party 24.

Prime Minister Hun Sen has vowed to keep coalition partner Funcinpec and swore never to form an alliance with the Sam Rainsy Party although with such a resounding victory, his party has no need to collaborate with any party.

The monolithic CPP, led by Hun Sen and structured on a Communist model, was always expected by analysts and the party's own pollsters to win handsomely, but the results surpassed expectations.

An estimated 8 million people were registered to vote in the first national elections in five years in the country of more than 14 million people. The CPP claims 5 million members.

Hun Sen has ruled for 23 years but is enjoying a new surge in popularity because of Cambodia's rapid economic growth, which the International Monetary Fund placed at around 10.5 per cent in 2007.

That's good for CPP and so bad for the country. The ruling party is leading the country to benefit the riches and elites, yet, most of poor people voted for them. The economic boom will see repercussion lying ahead if CPP would continue the existing pro-rich policies.

I was given two options when I went to the poll: ballot for Hun Sen or bullet into my heard; the choice was obviously clear. I had no other choice -- so did others!

Okay, now we need to continued with the progress. We need to settle with Thailand on Joint Development. That way Cambodia can continue to grow. We cannot get any investors to develop Preah Vihear if Thailand got a law suit pending on it.

Go Joint Development!

Now tell yourrelativews in cambodia if thjey want any help from their overseas relatives to go get it from Hun Sen. He knows how to make khmer people rich and get out of poverty.

With my relatives, not even one cent will be sent to them from now on.

Don't cry when your land, forest, lakes are taken over by the powerful, yuans.

You all low life had just fallen into Hun's trick again. Hun had spun everyone's head, in the country and as well as the oversea so-called "partriotic" individuals to focus more on the Preah Vihear Temple instead of the ballot boxes.

And now you are talking about the "joint development".

There will be no war with the Siam. Thaksin has been networking with the current Thai administration, and they're all offered a helping hand to their buddy "Hun".

To 1:43pm

No one could blindly blame Khmer citizens for voting for Hun Sen. They are the victims of exploitation. They are made poor and uneducated so that they are ruled easily. They have no access to internet and other news like you guys who post comment here. If you want to help the country, you should have not lived comfortably overseas, you should come here to help people as does Sam Rainsy. Without SRP, CPP would grap all 123 parliamentary seats.

My name was taken from the voting registration because I intended to vote for the opposition. Thousands more opposition voters were taken out of the voting registration by the ruling party (CPP).

HUN SEN, is the biggest taitor of all time, out of all races.

He make easy voting for the vietnamese, and suppress his own race to win the election. Cambodia cannot afford 5 more years of this regime. He is worst then pol pot.
