BANGKOK - THAILAND'S premier on Wednesday accused his Cambodian counterpart of using an escalating border dispute as a vote-winner, and said talks should resume after weekend general elections there.
PM Samak Sundaravej said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen was capitalising on nationalist sentiment ahead of Sunday's polls, which are widely expected to return the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) to power.
'Let them play - they merely want a result for the election on the 27th,' he told reporters. 'He (Hun Sen) just wants to win elections.' PM Samak said the military standoff over a tiny disputed patch of land near the 11th century Preah Vihear temple will be 'less intense' after the polls.
'They (the Cambodians) will find it easier to talk ... After the elections, I will talk,' he said.
At least 500 Thai and 1,000 Cambodian troops remain stationed in 4.6 square kilometres (1.8 square miles) of land claimed by both sides after intense talks on Monday ended with no resolution.
The recent tensions between the neighbours began when the United Nations earlier this month granted Cambodia's request to have the Preah Vihear ruins listed as a World Heritage Site.
PM Hun Sen has portrayed the recognition of the ruins as a national triumph, organising huge public celebrations, but nationalists in Thailand - some of whom still claim Preah Vihear as their own - were outraged.
Troops were sent to the region last week after Cambodia arrested three Thai protesters who tried to illegally enter the temple, which the World Court said in 1962 legally belonged to Cambodia.

I believe war will not bring both countries any benefits. Who will win if both states decided to dive into war we already know but there is no hope of finding any solution to this. ASEAN? UN security council? Bilateral solution? I do not believe that bilateral would find a good solution unless we divide the disputed area into 2. Should we bring a petition to the international court for their invasion?

I said it is a game Hun Sen needs Samak to help him to win this election against the most popular Rainsy. Hun Sen already signed a deal with Thailand since 2000. He sold the 4.6km surrounding Khmer Preah Vihear to Thailand just to keep his power. Believe it or not Si Saket was also Khmer territory.
But don't dream to get it back from Thailand.

The majority of people want to live in peace both sides cambodians and thais. In my opinion the thai government is afraid of the vietnamization in both cambodia and laos. The thai goverment is geting support from china in this border dispute between thai and cambodia. China doesn't want the vietnames to colonize both cambodia and laos. Therefore, china and thai want to ignize the war between cambodia and thai now. If the war between cambodia and thai now, there are so many cambodians and laos want the vietnames out of their countries. So the chinese and thai have better posion to win the war. But if they wait for vietnames to fully colonize cambodia and laos in the 20 years. Then the vietnames become strong can take over thailand easyly and they're not afrait of china. The solution to this current problem, the u.n and the asian countries should declare that all countris have to be free from colonization.

In my openion, Hun Sen doesn't need to play this dangerous game because even he doesn't play this the possibility that CPP can get more than 50% of seats in assembley is very high. The military game with foreign country is very very dangerous. If arm conflict happens, it might take few years to resolve. In my openion, if Thailand doesn't move to do this, the possobility that Hun Sen government will negotiate to share something with Thailand is very high. Samak, with the pressure from all of corners in his country is just starting this in bad timing. It's Samak who wanted to play this card to make safeguard for his government life, but the situation became deadlock. You can see, now, Samak can sleep very well without confronting the insulting from PAD. One more thing, even Thailand can manage to get some of that 4.6km2 and in stead made Cambodia to reconfirm the legal ownership of that, Samak can blame PAD or anti-governement protesters who start this problem. He can say that if those protesters didn't provoke this confrontation, Cambodia might ease manner to share something. And due to this confrontation, Cambodia will not share anything by letting everything goes by international law. Of course, Thailand is afraid to go to ICJ, however, I'm sure they must have studied on this scenario too. So, even Cambodia won once in 1962, if Cambodia take the case to ICJ again, Cambodia has to be very careful to make detailed study on the legal process.
May Cambodia can manage to end this with peace without losing even 1cm of that 4.6km2.

PM Hun Sen will win the election regardless whether or not Preah Vihear is an issue.
I know why Samak said like that, because he doesn't want PAD bomb him anymore and also he needs more popularity with the military and the people to hold his current government.
It is very stupid for Hun Sen, if he just wanna play PV card to win the election since everyone in Cambodia except the stupid Thais (Or they know but they prefer to be ignorance) know that CPP will win majority again in the election. PV case would bring Hun Sen down, if he manages it stupidly after his party win the election.
Hun Sen knows more than the others that this kinda game is not good to play. I don't think he is stupid enough to fool with it.

PAD fooling the people
I cannot believe the lunatics at the PAD have actually got the Thai people and the Puea Pandin party fooled over the Preah Vihear temple.
The line was drawn by the French in 1904, the International Court of Justice ruled on it in 1962,
“and the new line agreed by the Thai and Cambodian government actually brings more land into Thailand than the old map.
If the Cambodian government is happy to concede some land to the Thais while retaining the temple that is, and has always been, on Cambodian soil, then it is a win for the Thai government.”
This is just another example of the PAD stirring up issues trying to validate its existence. The fact that Puea Pandin party has weighed into it is disappointing; you would expect them to know better.
As for the Democrats, I hope they find the same demise the Australian Democrats recently have. Throwing stones at the government is good fun, but if you are never going to get a chance to run the country then it's a choice you can make without fear of having to prove you can do a better job.
The last Australian Democrats were voted out in November from the Senate and, as of July 1, the Democrats will be dead in Australia. Hopefully, the Thai Democrats will become history in the near future.
To the guy above, there is no chance Sam Rainsy will win dude. Let's be realistic. I'm not here to divide our people but just stating the facts. Plus, if Sam Rainsy won, hypothetically, do you really think he is capable of this kind of situation with the Thais? Sam Rainsy has no military background. The only background he has is business finance or something. Hun Sen is the strong man to stand up against Thai. If Sam Rainsy wins, the Thais will walk all over us and Sam Rainsy won't know what to do because he doesn't have military advisers or experience for the Thais to fear.

It is unheard of for any country on this planet Earth to have bilateral talk with the aggressor in hoping to find peaceful settlement! So tell all you UN stupid motherfucker, did Kuwaiti people give bilateral talk a chance in finding peaceful settlement with the Iraqi army? Of course not!
If the international community forces Cambodian leaders to have bilateral talk with the Thaicong aggressor then the International community is condoning and rewarding Thaicong aggression and make the door open wider for the Thaicong to commit future aggression on Cambodia!
The international community must not and can not accept any aggression whether it is big or small and international community must send a clear message to the Thaicong government to withdraw their troop from Cambodia before any peaceful bilateral talk can take place! The present of Thaicong military force on Cambodian soil is an act of defiant and the Thaicong government is violating international map, international law, and disrespect international community! For these reasons there is no point for Cambodian leaders to talk, to negotiate, and to discussion the naked Thaicong aggression on Cambodia any longer and it is a waste of time and time is what Cambodia doesn’t have!
Right now the Thaicong-Cambodian conflict is very small and manageable and the UN has a greater chance of success in solving it by acting now without delay! But once the bullets and the bombs start to fly and there is no point of return and the war can't be stop and that why Cambodian leaders still insist on third party (super powers, UN, and International community) intervention! Otherwise there is no reason for Cambodia to have bilateral talk because the Thaicong government doesn't even respect international map, international law and international community!
Cambodian leaders must draw a line on the sand and say no to Thaicong aggression!
