Thousands of Cambodians celebrated in the streets after an 11th-century temple was finally granted World Heritage status, even as a political row relating to the Hindu site continued to simmer with neighbouring Thailand.
Almost 50 years after an international court ruled that the Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia rather than Thailand, Unesco has decided that the complex that sits on the border of the two countries deserved the special status. When people awoke to the news yesterday morning, thousands poured on to the streets of the capital, Phnom Penh, to celebrate.
The Prime Minister, Hun Sen, said: "This is another proud achievement for our people, the people in the region as well as the whole world, that the temple is being recognised as the Khmer's greatest architecture. It resulted from a very long and complicated process and negotiations."
Cambodia started seeking special status for the temple in 2001 in the belief that it would help boost tourism and lead to additional international funding. Thailand had long opposed the designation because it feared the ruling would grant disputed land along the border to Cambodia.
But in May, Thailand's Prime Minister, Samak Sundaravej, threw his weight behind the application. His undertaking of support bypassed the country's parliament and his political opponents seized on the affair, stirring up a nationalist frenzy and accusing him of violating the nation's sovereignty. Just last month, Mr Samak survived a confidence vote that was brought by his opponents, who accuse him of acting as a proxy for the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Even as Cambodia celebrated yesterday, the political row in Thailand continued. The country's most senior court ruled that a communiqué approved by the cabinet in June which backed Cambodia's application to Unesco for the 900-year-old temple had required the approval of parliament. The opposition Democrat party said it would use the ruling to try to force out the country's Foreign Minister, Noppadon Pattama, who had created the communiqué.
"The Preah Vihear temple is part of a wounded history of Thailand and Cambodia," Charnvit Kasetsiri, a historian at Bangkok's Thammasat University, told the Associated Press. "It was used to stir up a nationalist movement in the past and is now threatening to inflame politics again."
The location of the temple has continued to serve as a defensive outpost until recently. In the spring of 1975, as Khmer Rouge rebels were seizing control of Phnom Penh, government troops continued to defend a base at Preah Vihear more than a month after the rest of the country had fallen.
In 1998, when the very last of the Khmer Rouge fighters agreed to surrender to the Cambodian government, Preah Vihear was the location of negotiations that led to the settlement.
Since Cambodia made its application in 2001 for special status for the site, both countries have increased security at their embassies amid fears that nationalist anger could get out of control.
But Unesco said that its designation of the site would not impact on discussions about the border. It said its ruling was based on a different application to the joint Thai-Cambodian communiqué which was criticised in Bangkok yesterday.

Corrections, Richie, Siam(Thailand) has always existed alongside Burma and Cambodia.Only they were paying tributes to the more powerful Khmer Kings, who had God like status.According to historians, the Khmer Kings spent all the country's wealth on the temples. Hundreds of thousands of them, till their coffers went dry.The Thai kings took advantage of their plight and ransacked all the Cambodian cities, including the famed Angkor Wat.In 1341.AD.
All the gold, precious materials, including, dancing girls were hauled to Thai cities and hence began the Thai Dynasties.This was in an era, when Khmers had already embraced Buddhism and adopted Pali writings.The Asparas you see in Thai cultures are are from the Khmer Culture.And Kick Boxing too. Though there's some controversy in this claim.
But visit the temples and inscriptions on the stone walls at the Angkor.And you'll get a better picture.These were built around the 10th century, long before Siam became a regional power.

The answer to your question is: NO. Thai is not a pure race and it was mixed before it came Thai. Thai government should revise the country's education system with regard to history. The wrong and fake history that is being taught to Thai younger generations will one day put Thailand and its people in danger, a giant danger. All Thais should learn to accept the facts. They are not superior than anyone else. They were just a small tribe that was expelled from China and came to ask for mercy from Cambodia (the then Khmer empire). However, they betrayed and fought until Thailand's existen in the 13th century. This is the fact and Thai people should not be ignorrant.
thailand is nothing without tourists, prostitution, both sexes. and plus they think they are somebody important when they are nothing in khmer view. they are known to khmer people as thieves who steal from cambodia everything. they are never a good friend of cambodia and cambodia do not trust them a bit. just look now, their true color comes out and they still have no shame. what a loser they really are in khmer view. i think of them as lower than any animal on the planet. god bless cambodia.
Khmers should thank THAI for allowing them to stay out of trouble when the khmer rouge and the vietnamese CHASE them out of their country .Of course there were some mistreatment but they were safe from Death.Without THAI'S kindness or if the Thai just killed them at the border,there will not be khmers OVERSEA period.So khmers oversea really owe Thai a big Thank you.
10:58: Thais did it because no choice. How would they have killed the khmer without any warning from the international community. They had to do it because of international pressure, no tby themselves. I speak generally. There were some thai individuals who were good with khmer.
Remember the Preah Vihear affair, when thai assemble all the refugees and dumped them other there to be killed by the khmer rouges or minefield. Those who ran back were shot by thei soldiers.
During the camps, thai made a lot of money by taking 60% of international donations . When a refugees escape or wanted to go to another camp, there were beaten and tortured by thai soldiers.
Even the Hmong, they suffer in the camps actually in thailand...That's what you call thia kindness?!!!
Ah greedy monkeys in Cambodia must return the Temple back to Khmer in Issan province. They are not the owner of the temple.
I think if SIAM can prove that they have capability to build this temple, you should bring it to international court before 1972. But almost 50 years already, Siam could find any evidence.

yes, i agree with you completely but if the Thai just ignored all international outcry and just kick us out regardless ,then there will not be khmers oversea,no khmers FUNCINPEC,NO KHMER SONN SAN at all, and perhap yuon still control Cambodia until today .Most or all of the khmers refugees took refuse in Thailand first before resettling in the third countries later .Well, there were savages and cruel treatments from Thai but at least we should thank them too.It's our khmers rouge motherfuckers that caused all kind of suffering to all of us.
I think Thais people never think Cambodian is competitor at all even never be in their eye to care so much. Cambodia has low quality people, low education, low civilization, too high stupid ego like dog barks the plane.

After reading this,
I think Khmers have great ancestors and they were very great in the past.
They think that Thais were low, thieves and everything negative you can imagine.
Personally, it's so funny to see that Khmers even think that the high rate of HIVs in their country originated from Thais.
When Khmers were slaughtered and saved by Thais, those who live now
still think that is what they deserved, show no sign of gratefulness to Thais at all.
Some even think that Khmers would have been better, greater, if they had a stability in the past.
I think if we don't fool ourselves and always "think" that the others are always bad or inferior, the World would be better than this.
I went to Thailand, and I like the place and their people are generally nice.
I've plan to visit Cambodia soon as well. And from what I've heard, I think I have to prepare more to visit there.

I'm Thai and I've visited Angkor Wat. I really admired your culture and ancient heritages and thought that Combodia is rich country.
I changed my thought since I saw that Combodia people have wrong perception about Thailand. We do not want the whole Preah Viharn but don't want to loose the rights to claim on our border, just litte piece of land that we have as judged by world court.
Khmer are under controlled of bad goverment just like Thai goverment. But Khmer people have less power to argue with the goverment than Thai people. Your country will never be developed as your government will not let their people be educated enough to have democracy power.
Khmer people should be opened mind and see what is really going on in your country and around the world. Don't just pretend that you have been badly treated by Thailand and ask for help from UN and other developing country.
You know what? Country, that gives you helps, will exploit your country more than they invest. Some country gives you scholarships or used property, but they took your forest and exploit your natural heritage that will never be recovered. You should know from your declining green area. Thailand has this experience before, why don't you learn from our country.
I really want to hate Khmer but feel pity to the Khmer more than to hate.
