Thai and Cambodian officials have failed to resolve mutual claims over land near an ancient temple along their border.
Both sides said that troops would remain in the region, after talks in an eastern border town in the Aranyaprathet district of Thailand on Monday.
Tea Banh, the Cambodian defence minister, said that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed not to use force in the confrontation over land near the Preah Vihear temple in Cambodia.
Tea said: "The temperature ... hasn't been reduced."
The closed-door talks lasted nearly eight hours.
No troops increase
It was decided that troops on the border would not be increased and that negotiations would continue at an unspecified time.
Thailand has more than 500 and Cambodia about 1,000 troops on the border.
General Boonsrang Niumpradit, the Thai supreme commander, said that both nations' troops would "not use any violence or weapons".
"We both have legal problems, which we have informed our superiors to discuss."
Cambodia maintains that Thai troops are trespassing on its territory.
Last week, hundreds of Cambodian and Thai troops massed at the border and came close to a shootout as the confrontation escalated over the territory near the temple complex.
Hun Sen, the Cambodian prime minister, said on Saturday in a letter to Samak Sundaravej, his Thai counterpart, that a previous international court ruling showed that Thailand did not have a claim to the territory.
The letter said the map used in the 1962 ruling by the International Court of Justice shows that the temple "is legally located approximately 700m inside Cambodian territory".
"Nonetheless, I have full confidence that our joint efforts will result in a mutually satisfactory solution to [our] current problem," Hun Sen said.
The conflict over the territory surrounding the ancient Hindu temple escalated earlier this month when Unesco, the UN cultural body, approved Cambodia's application to have the complex named a World Heritage site.
Thai activists say the status undermines Thailand's claim to the compound of a nearby Buddhist pagoda.

To have the fucken Thaicong army on Cambodian soil is a disgrace and all of them should be fired upon by Cambodian army! The fact that the fucken Thaicong army are on Cambodian soil already and now they even ask for a place at the table to negotiate for something that they don't even have is unspeakable!
These fucken Thaicong are a fucken terrorist and the free world have an obligation and the responsibility to help Cambodia with weapons to kill these Thaicong terrorist motherfuckers!
Fuck the UN, ASEAN and ICJ
we will deal with Cambodia with force to reclaim our sovereignty
it was a big mistake for the temple to be listed with the UNESCO
we can destroy Cambodia in less than one minute if war broke out.
Sure, okay though guy @ 2:33 AM, sure u can destroy cambodia, but the truth remain the same, the temple belong to cambodia whether you like it or not.
try and we will wipe out you fucking thai worms from this earth in one second
Why mediate? The Khmers were deliberately stolen our temple in broad daylight. Also, it was imperiously brazen and audacious of the Khmer government to have the ruined temple listed with the UNESCO.
To avert the regional war, the Khmer government must unlist the temple with the UNESCO, or have joint developments -- or -- we'll teach the Khmers a lesson that they will never forget.
Don't ever think of waging war with us. Look at your pathetic Khmer soldiers who are barely have nothing on, and not to mention of using dilapidated weapons, to go against us.
Again, take our offer, or face the destruction of your nation. Once your nation destructed, you'll become our slaves.
Oh! Tell your prime minister that we already had agreed on a specific stipulation when he signed the agreement, and we think he should honor it. In fact, we deal you to take the issue to the UN.
Mis. of Inter.
I hope we khmer care about our people in the country. War doesn't make us live well, but it kill us and make us suffer. Both country try to built better relationship for long time. Why don't we start the peace? As I know, we send troops there first and more than troops in neighbour country. What did we do? It's not for our people's life! It's just for leading-to-death people and soldiers and for the grave! It doesn't solve both country's feeling! I'm so sad to see our cambodian being like this!
How about our children ? How about our people in our city? Anyone care?
To have peace in Asia the international community should know who is the most powerfull in thev region!
And we Thai the most moderned and strong nation in asia demand the international court to reverse the verdic and reenlist the temple fron Unisco list! If you do not want to see war!
The talk just talk, but Thai military continues to hauled their 105mm and 155mm facing to the area.
At the Cambodian side have only few of old Soviet made Machine guns 17.8mm, B41 1/2, Ak47.
The Cambodian look fears to Thai's Army. they are only strongest with Khmer inside without arm. If the war broke out Cambodian's Army will run for their lieves. And Siam will advance their forces as quick as to Sisophon in 1Hr., then to capture Battambang in the next Hr. Hello!!!
"Nobody wants to see this dispute escalate," says a Thai military officer, who requested anonymity. "We are doing our best not to let anything happen.... Cambodia understands that the problem arises from domestic political problems in Thailand."

Cambodian and Thai are like brother! Why you try to kill your own blood? All temples are heritage of your own ancesters. Keep it in good shape and love your brother!!!
I had noticed during the 1997 coup of AH PRINCE RANANRIDTH from power by AH HUN SEN military thugs and AH HUN SEN military thugs were well equipped and well dress up to fight any war! Since 1997 to 2008, Cambodian military are falling into disarray and they are ill equipped and poorly dress up as a soldiers due to corruption within the Cambodian military! I have no doubt AH HUN SEN will BE overthrown by a foreign power just like King Sihanouk!
Check it out!

I agreed with PM Hun Sen. What everyone wants is Joint Development. The Khmer on both sides have live together peacefully for decades. There is no need to spoil that for them by cutting off one side.
Guys just forget about the siem stupid comment.
Push for the stupid Hun Sen to ask for the UN assistance. Obviously CPP is gone fall for the siem stupid tricks again.
Fuck Hun Sen just file the UN assistance and them you can do the clown as long as you want with Samak. This is your lifeline against the siem hypocrisy.
On behalf of the Thai people I feel sorry and ashamed of my government for having caused this problem to Khmer. We have interited a lot of things from Khmer, from language to to culture and land and temples.
It is about time we accept history. The temple and land around it belong to Cambodia.
Waraporn
Don't worry, mate. Our Khmer people in Issan and throughout Thailand will appreciatef what we are doing for them.
