Thailand, the Nation of Dishonesty!

It is Cambodian troops who invade in our soil”, said Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on Friday 18 July 2008.

If we observe the processes of the conflict we can judge who the righteous is and who the provoker and the invader is.

Legally and internationally, the sacred Khmer Preah Vihear temple was undisputedly recognized as Cambodian property and geographically, it is located in Cambodia soil both in the past and the present.

Historically, the sacred Khmer Preah Vihear temple was built in the 10th and 11th century by the august kings of former Cambodian Empire- Suryavarman I and Suryavarman II when the Tai tribe (present Thai) were still in Nan Jao southern of China who later moved southwards to resettle in the then Khmer Empire in the wake of the Mongol invasion of China and this tribe was forgiven and kindly allowed to live in our Empire by our benevolent kings.

However, our great Empire was weakened by the in-fighting politics and the war with other neighboring states. Taking this chance; the Tai built up its state, attacked and sacked us in the 1431. From then on we have been under the consistent attack and invasions by these neighbors for centuries.

Our country was able to survive under the French protectorate. Some provinces, Battambang, Preah Vihear, and Siem Reap, were given back by the Siam even though many are still under its occupation today, and the new borderline demarcation between Thailand and Cambodia was carried out drawn by the French. Thailand accepted the map and signed the treaties-1904 and 1907 which also used as the foundation for International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Hague in 1962 over the Preah Vihear case which favor Cambodia in the suit.

However, the Thai never give up their greed and honestly accept the loss proudly boasting that they are the superior people to all nations in South East Asia and why must they subject to the Khmer? The war continues. They rewrite their ultra-nationalist history, reject the existence of the Khmer political, cultural, and architectural influences in their society, create hatred and the look down on Khmer, Laos as well as Burma, and keep invading Khmer border both land and sea, and treat and kill Khmer like animal.

Now the wound becomes painful again to the Thai when it comes to Khmer Preah Vihear temple seek for World heritage status submitted since 2002 and finally granted its listing in 7 July 2008.

The Thai consider the loss of Preah Vihear as the unforgivable shame. They always think they are superior to Khmer. So how can they give it up easily and accept the loss? Then the frame over the border invasion and Preah Vihear control started. How could this have happened? The Thai know that it would be the loss again if they would contest with Cambodia honestly over the Preah Vihear unless they stage a long-term strategy and carefully frame over Cambodian weakness and the world’s soft politics toward them. Let’s observe the below process of the political frame of the Thai.

Firstly, they persuaded Cambodia to sign the memorandum of understanding (MOU) over border demarcation, esp., the 2000 MOU. Why do we need MOU? Why don’t we use GPS basing on the existing map of Siam-Franco treaty to demarcate the borderline?

Then, they published the fake protests, to Cambodia, published widely in media, sent them to international communities, that Cambodia is invading Thai territorial sovereignty, esp., the protests in 2004, 2005, 2007, and April 2008. Why are they the fake protests? Because have Cambodia ever invaded any country for these centuries? Is Cambodia capable to invade Thailand while she is trying to survive herself from poverty of decades of war and the internal conflicts? Thailand is a forever peaceful country and has its soldiers stationing everywhere along the border and how can the unarmed Cambodian civilian invade Thailand? We hardly believe this accusation of the Thai.

By using the 2000 MOU, the fake protests, and through its soft persuasion and the fake smile, the international communities listened to the Thai and asked Cambodia to negotiate with the Thai for their support in order to list the Preah Vihear temple. They successfully blocked Cambodia from listing the temple as World Heritage site two times 2006 and 2007 and hoped to achieve their greed, i.e., the Joint Management as they proposed. Their often and basic arguments raised as an objection to the listing of the Khmer Preah Vihear temple is that the borderline is not known, the stair of the temple is in Thailand, the temple is easily accessible only from Thailand, some important sites subordinates to the temple are in Thailand, etc., so we must have the Joint Management. How can these people claim that the borderline is not known? Do they lose their mind and forget the Siam-Franco treaty in 1904 and 1907 and the verdict of ICJ 1962 which they themselves signed and recognized? Basing on the ICJ 1962, geographically the borderline is clear and the demarcated distance from the temple stair to the Cambodian-Thai border is as far as 2.6km away. But why the stair is in Thailand now? Did the Khmer build the temple without its subordinate elements and the stairs? So who invades whom?

Boring with the Thai objection and the easy-tricked international community, motivated by the political interest, the Cambodian leaders fell into the Thai trap by redrawing the new map proposed by the Thai. Why is it the trap? Because with the new map redrawn, the Thai will have privilege to lay claim for the 4.6 km2 land surrounding the Preah Vihear temple which is the long planned strategy to get rid of taking over the temple or achieving the Joint Management plan.

We can see it clearly that it is really the bad frame of the Thai. After endorsing the Joint Communiqué, they then rejected it. They are playing with two faces flip-flopping daily over the Khmer Preah Vihear temple issues in order to provoke the conflicts and they will take the opportunity to invade Cambodia. With this, they intentionally ignore the daily protestors who claim over Khmer Preah Vihear temple. And they even allowed these protestors to go into Cambodia illegally and protest inside Cambodia. Who believe that dozens of Thai border soldiers can’t prevent these three protestors from entering Cambodia? Where on earth one can enter into another country freely, illegally and protest against it? Cambodia detained them only four hours and then released without harm. Do we believe the Thai would treat us the same as we did to the three Thais if we entered into Thailand in the same situation? The answer is absolutely “NO”, because we have seen and witnessed so much Cambodian civilian blood covering the ground along the Cambodian-Thai border inhumanly committed by these brutal Thai.

Now it is almost their last step. After having achieved their strategical frames-the 2000 MOU, the Joint Communiqué, and the latest bait of three Thai protestors, they (Thai soldiers) entered into Cambodia freely by claiming that they come to protect their people who were arrested by the Cambodian soldiers. If the Thai are really honest neighbor why didn’t they send their delegates to negotiate for the release? Why soldiers? And it is absurd for the claim because the arrested people were already released and why don’t they withdraw?

With the pressure of Cambodia side and the international eyes, they later on claimed differently as Thai army Colonel Chay Huay Soongnern said, “We all love peace. We are here, we don’t want anything. We came to offer protection in case Thai protestors come here … We came to help Cambodian troops and their people. I don’t think that we will stay here much longer.” Why don’t they station in their country to prevent their Thai extreme protestors? Does Cambodia ask for their help? Do they think Cambodia is incapable for such a protection? I think Hun Sen government is even more capable in prevention than the Thai for such a protest.

Now the Thai trick is clearly revealedwhen Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, on Friday 18 July 2008, said that, “It is Cambodian troops who invade in Thai soil”. He claimed this after his country has built up solid military base inside Cambodia and have observed the silence of international communities´s reaction against its invasion over Cambodia. Now they don’t withdraw as they said before but they keep building up their forces and at the same time they start to play diplomacy with the international communities in order to paint the bad image of Cambodia by summoning Cambodian ambassador to Bangkok to accept their protest against Cambodian invasion and inviting eight Asean members to receive their protests signed by PM Samak on 18 July 2008 and some others framed documents, 2000 MOU, the Thai protests against Cambodia invasion 2004, 2005, 2007 and April 2008.

It is even more clearly explained the dirtiness of the Thai if we reflect on the statement of the Thai Supreme Commander Gen Boonsrang Neimpradit who indicated that “Thailand could propose Phnom Penh withdraw about 500 Cambodian villagers from the disputed area as a condition for a Thai military withdrawal.” This statement is clearly referred to Sumak’s latest statement and the new redrawn map –the Joint Communiqué. It means that now they officially claim for the land and greedily want to completely control it.

They do know that if they don’t use forces to pressure Cambodia, the 500 villagers will not be removed and their dream to rob those surrounding lands of Khmer Preah Vihear temple will be failed and the seek for future Joint Management will be completely nonnegotiable and this will put the Thai for another shame.

What will happen if Cambodia doesn’t agree with the condition? I think the Thai will resort to other tricks. They might allow other Thai protesters enter into Cambodia and then provoke the war allegedly protecting their civilians. They might at night use Thai soldiers disguising as Cambodian soldiers and wage the war first against the Thai themselves and then accuse Cambodia as the first to wage war and then invade Cambodia. Or there might be more invisible tricks. So watch out!

They do hope they will win the war because they think they are always superior to us. Then the villagers will flee from their homes if the war would be erupted. They will control the land and pressure for the last bargain in exchange for the peace, i.e., the rightful control of the land surrounding the temple and it may be even the Joint Management of the Preah Vihear temple.

Do we hope the conflict will be solved easily? I do hope so only if Thailand can become the nation of honesty. For now I see that, “the conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand will not be easily solved if without international intervention, because Cambodia is trying to solve the conflicts basing on its honest, respectful, and friendly relationship with the Thai while the Thai is trying hard to solve it through its dirty political trick for long-term invading and dominant political strategy over Cambodia”.

My observation is that the Thai trick is easily revealed if we listen to their languages carefully. They always speak their languages flexibly according to the step of the situation development they have planned and achieved.

In Solidarity!

I would like to share my own opinion about the disputation between Thai and Cambodia. I have the pessimistic feeling for the meeting of the both country on monday next week in Sra Keo province. WHY? Because there are many reasons:
1) The General Anupong Padjinda, supreme commander of Thai Army said we must send more soldier to the disputed area to presure on Cambodia side for their negotiation. They don't have willing to deal this problem by fair and equality.
2) The prime minister of Thai, Samak Sundaravej said for replying letter to Mr. Hun Sen that The Kirisvarak Pagoda called ( Wat Pra Sat Preah Vihear) is locted in Thai sovereignty. But the real situation, it is in Cambodia sovereignty by legal of international law (ICJ decision 15 June 1962, The Franco-Siam treaties in 1904 and 1907, 46 years without proclaim this area belong to their country) and the historical area ( The Cambodian people have been living there too long year ago).
3) The representative of Thai for this meeting is Genaral Boonsang Niempradit. He is just a deputy chairman of Thai's GBC only, he does have the power to decide their decision and ordre to the thai soldier. the main powerful is in the hand of General Anupong Padjinda, a supreme commander of Thai Army.
4) The most powerful man is General Anupong Padjinda, not Prime minister Samak Sundaravej. Samak is hasitate to decide because he faces many enemies such The General of Army group, politicians of opposite party, King Phomvibol Adulyadeth, Adhisit Vejjajiva, leader of PAD and so on.
So it mean this meeting on monday in Sra Keo in null value for the both country.

According these points, we put the question how to deal this tension? the answer:
The firstly, the both country must try to find the solution by faithful negotiation. if no solution the both country must complain to ASEAN, UN's security council, ICJ(international Court for Justice) and UN because the both country are a member of ASEAN and UN. So the both country must respect the UN rule and UN's decision. if the any country don't respect the UN's desicion, The UN must kick out that country from the UN's member like UN has done on Taiwan and then UN must the UN's force to disputed area such KFOR at Kosovo in Serbia, UN's force at Darfu in Sudan and Estern Timor and so on. UN must protect the small and weakness country by international Law. I think it is the time for Cambodia follow this way to prevent the civil people and soldier life of the both country.

I hope the both will be glad to get this cool solution, they don't want to fight because of provoking of some small ultra-nationalist group. These small group don't represent the whole country. They are a just a small group who want to get power by using the extreme nationalist idea, they don't care the civil people, soldier life, economic in their country and whole area. They are the idiot people!!!

I enjoy reading this well-research article. I know it and I know it. Ah Siem arch Kri were originally from Nan Chao shitholes and got defeated and chased out by the Mongols. I know it and I know it. I feel very embarrassed right now that the mighty Angkorian defenders allowed these homeless treacherous Nan Chao Siems to rise through the ranks to topple us and even succeeded in detaching many of our provinces from Mother Cambodia. Dang it. Anyway, it won't happen again, you stupid hellish Siem creatures. We know what you ancestors look like from our Angkor Wat gallery walls, you ugly creatures. If you steal any of the Khmer terriotry again, we will go dance with you in hell itself and then we will come back and reclaim all of our lost territory. We will walk supreme in Southeast Asia once again, you stupid hellish Siem Creature. Cambodia stands alone just like Europe does when it comes to cultural heritage and pride, you crazy bastard. Go reclaim your ancestral natural Nan Chao culture and pride, you stupid. Hands off to Khmer territory and temples. Hahha.

Why Cambodia have to talk with Thailand? Thai invade Cambodia. Now their militaries stationed inside Cambodia soil. The meeting on this monday cannot bring solution. According to Hun Sen informinister,Mr:kanharith said that Cambodia did not ask for UN security council intervention. Why not Mr:Kanharith? Hun Sen cannot solve this this problem by his own. the current situation show that Hun Sen regime is very weak both economy and militaries. Everybody know that Hun Sen have no money to suport troops in conflict zone. Therefore this corrupt government should stepdown as soon as posible.

Hun Sen govt is very arrogant, Now lets see how arrogant they are with the thai. Or they will just keep quiet.

I only see and hear Hun Sen open up his mouth with his people, especially the poor and his opposition. That is all he is good for. In term of business growth, its not Hun sen work. Its the spirit and power of our ancient ancestor who are still protecting khmer and land today. Without it, We khmer can not rely on Hun SEn govt. Hun Sen can't even protect himself from the vietnamese. How can he protect his country and his people.

NOw, only khmer all together can reclaim what belong to khmer. Not this current government.

Samak you will have the chance to say whatever you want in front of the ICJ real soon.

I'm not sure than they want to listen to you.

what is thailand's claim based on? what evidence do they have? is it based on their disrespect or disagreement with the franco-siamese treaty of 1904 - 1907 and the contempt of court of the icj verdict and their unilateral redrawn of their own map? all of these are so unlawful in accordance to the international law that governs and protect international treaties and the UN which thailand is now violated all of the laws. at least cambodia has not only a lot of historic facts, we also won the icj verdict and we still respect the franco -siamese treaty of 1904 - 1907. thailand has no legitimate claim or new evidence that icj given them 10 years to appeal, and now it is 46 years. so, what can they say now? they can say that disagree with the icj verdict and the treaty of 1907 etc... and probably have more illegal excuses like khmer isan, japanese defeated in world war II, mr. hun sen duress or force to submit new map of preah vihear area ,etc... in order for thailand to claim preah vihear and area. still, when it comes to the law, thailand will always lose. so, cambodia will use the law to deal with thailand in this regards or this case. there is no hope for thailand ever winning in this dispute with cambodia. i mean they try the other method of force thinking they have superior military technology or whatever against cambodia, but the UN and the icj will see to it that thailand will always lose against cambodia for stealing or trying to steal and invade cambodia against the contempt of court of the icj order and the violation of the international law. god bless cambodia.

i hope from thailand failure to respect the icj and the internation law, the world diplomatic community will always question thailand with everything they signed internationally. this will forever humiliate them for their flip-flopping of international treaty and for contempt of court and violation of the interntional law.

yes, the article above is well written by a khmer scholar based on true evidence and from the khmer perspective and is so true. it hit the nail right on the head of the whole siem's pretexts on cambodia. thank you for putting it together for the world to read and see.

anyway, any deal with thailand from now on should have the UN as our witness as cambodia cannot and will not trust the siem dirty politics anymore as there are too much duress on the khmer part from thailand to sign something or submit a new map or whatever against cambodian own will as thailand is evidently only thinking of its own benefit and not being fair and respectful of the international law and the UN charter etc... cambodia should always ask the UN and use the international law when dealing with thailand, especially with boundary issue. we lost trust and respect for thailand already with their dirty trick on us since the time of their independence from our cambodian empire at the end of the great angkor civilization of cambodia in the late 1200s to early 1300s AD. since then, siem foreign policy was and still is as recent evidence has shown to use dirty political tricks to violate and rape and steal from cambodia as much as they can. they ought to be ashame of their country for doing so, especially when the world is now going global and the UN and international laws are the governing body of this kind of cruel ambition on another soevereigned nation like that of cambodia. thailand deserves punishment from the world community if she doesn't change her way about this. god bless cambodia.

DEAR COMPATRIOTS,
WE SHOULD ASK OURSELVES WHY HUN XEN IS EXTREMELY ANXIOUS TO NEGOCIATE WITH SAMAK AND DOESN’T WANT TO TAKE THE PREAH VIHEAR ISSUE TO the UN, the International Court of Justice or the Association of South East Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) Forum.
I AM TELLING YOU WHY!
THE REASON IS HUN XEN WANTS TO HIDE THE SECRET AGREEMENT THAT HE SIGNED WITH SAMAK AND GAVE SIAM THE 4.6 SQUARE KILOMETRES OF THE SURROUNDING AREAS OF KHMER TEMPLE PREAH VIHEAR IN EXCHANGE TO GET THEIR SUPPORT TO LIST OUR TEMPLE AS World Heritage site and further HIS OWN BUSINESS INTERESTS WITH THAI POLITICIANS (SAMAK, TAKSIN...) TO EXPLOIT THE TEMPLE.

HIS FIRST BETRAYAL WAS ON 11th NOVEMBER 2006
IN SIGNING THE SUPPLEMENTAL TREATY, HE HAD PAID TRIBUTE TO HIS YUON MASTER, OUR LAND, OUR ISLE KOH TRAL, OUR SEA!

PAD fooling the people
I cannot believe the lunatics at the PAD have actually got the Thai people and the Puea Pandin party fooled over the Preah Vihear temple.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The line was drawn by the French in 1904, the International Court of Justice ruled on it in 1962,

“and the new line agreed by the Thai and Cambodian government actually brings more land into Thailand than the old map.

If the Cambodian government is happy to concede some land to the Thais while retaining the temple that is, and has always been, on Cambodian soil, then it is a win for the Thai government.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is just another example of the PAD stirring up issues trying to validate its existence. The fact that Puea Pandin party has weighed into it is disappointing; you would expect them to know better.

As for the Democrats, I hope they find the same demise the Australian Democrats recently have. Throwing stones at the government is good fun, but if you are never going to get a chance to run the country then it's a choice you can make without fear of having to prove you can do a better job.

The last Australian Democrats were voted out in November from the Senate and, as of July 1, the Democrats will be dead in Australia. Hopefully, the Thai Democrats will become history in the near future.

"However, our great Empire was weakened by the in-fighting politics and the war with other neighboring states. Taking this chance; the Tai built up its state, attacked and sacked us in the 1431. From then on we have been under the consistent attack and invasions by these neighbors for centuries."

That is 100% fairy tale. The Thai doesn't take chance. Where do they get the spears, swords, bow and arrow, horses, ..., and elephants from? It is just impossible. The truth is (and as usual) while Khmer is fighting Khmer, one side asked the Thai for help and supported them with the neccessary arm and promised them land and permanent residency. And that is what gave birth to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and almost France too. You have to be blind if you don't see this pattern throughout History and still existed today.

"Our country was able to survive under the French protectorate. Some provinces, Battambang, Preah Vihear, and Siem Reap, were given back by the Siam even though many are still under its occupation today, and the new borderline demarcation between Thailand and Cambodia was carried out drawn by the French. Again, more fairy tales, the Thai (or Opposition Khmer faction and their Chinese allied) doesn't give back anything. The truth here is the French mighty colonial were asked to take back all those provinces and temples back that was occupied by the Thai long ago. There was no war then. Everyone was in dependent, but the greedy warmonger in Cambodia has to invited the French to ignited the flame all over again.

At any rate, since the French were defeated from the region, everything has to be return to the Khmer in Thailand, no excuse, especially calling Khmer People in Thailand, "Chinese".

sure, that is why the ICJ voted in cambodia favors. you and your fairy tales. the french was never defeated because the thai and french treaty is the sole documents.

the thai was defeated in the battles with the french, no excuse, no wineing,

Thailand: Beheadings, Burnings in Renewed Terror Campaign 07 Jul 2008 20:53:44 GMT

(New York, July 7, 2008) ? Leaders of the separatist insurgency in southern Thailand must end the targeting of civilians in their effort to establish an independent state, Human Rights Watch said today. "Insurgent groups continue to unleash brutality on civilians to demonstrate their power and weaken the credibility of Thai authorities," said Brad Adams, director of the Asia division at Human Rights Watch. "Retaliating against government abuses does not provide any excuse for killing civilians. Their tactics are illegal and cannot be justified in any circumstances."

On July 4, insurgents beheaded Khan Sangthong, a 55-year-old Buddhist, in Bannang Sta district, Yala province. He was shot, burned, had nails hammered through his hands, and was beheaded. His severed head was placed on a bridge about 60 meters from his body. Over the past four years, more than 20 Buddhist Thais have been beheaded by insurgents across the southern border provinces.

Thai officials told Human Rights Watch that Khan was the latest victim in a series of deadly attacks on government officials and civilians in Bannag Sta district, which have been carried out in apparent reprisal for the recent killing in a firefight of local insurgent leader Koseng Apibanbae and five other members of his cell by government security forces on June 23.

Similar retaliatory attacks took place in Yala's Raman district after Abdulloh Da-esor, younger brother of local insurgent leader Abdulroning Da-esor, was killed with other two insurgents in a gunfight with government security forces on March 28. Since then, insurgents have reacted by attacking civilians. On July 2, Veera Muenjan, the 54-year-old principal of Ban Ma Hae School, was shot dead by insurgents. This attack forced all 55 government schools in Raman district to close. Veera was the 99th victim of deadly assaults on government teachers since the outbreak of insurgent violence in January 2004. On July 5, three Muslims ? who allegedly worked as informants for the army ? were killed and three others were wounded when insurgents opened fire at a crowded teashop not far from where Veera was murdered.

Insurgents have killed and injured civilians in Narathiwat province in apparent retaliation for the death of a Muslim religious leader, Yapa Kaseng, who was tortured to death on March 21 while being detained and interrogated by soldiers from the Army's 39th Taskforce in Rue Soh district (see http://hrw.org/english/docs/2008/03/26/thaila18346.htm; and http://hrw.org/english/docs/2008/07/03/thaila19251.htm). For example, on July 2, Wanna Sisuan, a 27-year-old Buddhist woman, was shot in the head by insurgents in Rue Soh district after dropping her children at school. A leaflet was left next to her body saying: "Soldiers killed Malayu [ethnic Malay] people. So, we will kill Thai people." On June 21, heavily armed insurgents stormed a passenger train in Ra Ngae district and executed a Buddhist train police officer and three Buddhist train workers. Train services to the southern border provinces were suspended for six days after the attack.

"Leaders of the insurgency need to rethink their tactics, which are not only abhorrent, but also are alienating large sections of public opinion in the south, including in their own community," said Adams.

Human Rights Watch has repeatedly condemned violations of the laws of war by government forces and insurgents in southern Thailand. A fundamental principle of the laws of war is the distinction between civilians and military objectives. The insurgents claim that the civilians attacked were part of a larger group (Buddhist Thais) that is participating in the hostilities, but the laws of war allow no such defense or justification for attacks on civilians. Radical interpretations of Islamic law that would permit attacks on civilians in certain circumstances are also contrary to the laws of war. International humanitarian law explicitly prohibits insurgent tactics such as reprisal attacks against civilians and captured combatants, summary execution of civilians or captured combatants, mutilation or other mistreatment of the dead, and attacks directed at civilian facilities.

Although the Pejuang Kemerdekaan Patani (Patani Freedom Fighters), separatist insurgents in the loose network of BRN-Coordinate (National Revolution Front-Coordinate), have suffered major setbacks from security sweeps, they still maintain their presence in hundreds of Muslim villages. They use state-sponsored abuses and heavy-handed tactics to justify their campaign of violence and terror. According to Thai Journalists Association, there have been 526 attacks in Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat provinces and four districts of Songkhla province in the first six months of 2008, resulting in 301 deaths.

"Neither side in this devastating conflict pays enough attention to protecting the lives and rights of the local residents," Adams said. "People in the south are trapped between violently abusive insurgents and government forces."

Thailand, the Nation of Dishonesty!

Dear Ms/Mr.Pang Sokhoeun,

There is absolutely no need to resort to name calling. You may not like Thai people and some Thai people may not like our people either.

Your may call Thailand the "nation of dishonesty". Some Thai people may also call us the "nation of killers" with reference to the Killing Fields or the Khmer Rouge.

In Cambodia there were and still are killers. In Thailand there were and still are dishonest people. But in Cambodia there were and still are good, non-vioent people just as in Thailand there were and still are honest people.

We should remember how many hundreds of thousands of our fellow countrymen who had been given refuge in Thailand when they fled communism and war. How many more who had been able to go to third countries via Thailand? How many have gone to get medical treatment in Bangkok? How many have gone to work in Thailand as migrant workers? Hos many back in Cambodia these migrant workers have fed?

On our part, I would recommend you read below a story of at least six of our poor fellow countrymen who had helped Thai embassy employees to escpae to safety the night their embassy was ransacked and burned by our mob in January 2003. Those six were later nominated the Time magazine "Asian Heroes" of that year.

LAO Mong Hay, Hong Kong

Cambodia's Samaritans
On a night of savagery, they risked death to save life
By Kay Johnson

The village of squatter shacks behind the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh is so poor it doesn't even have a name. It's a desperate place, home to some 300 Cambodians, who have washed up here beside the fetid, garbage-strewn overflow of the nearby Bassac River. But one day in late January, as the Thai embassy burned and the chants of mobs grew louder, a handful of these forgotten squatters became heroes.

When Yun Ry heard the mayhem, she was only vaguely aware of what the anti-Thai riots were about. But the 45-year-old cake-seller knew enough about Cambodian mobs to know what to do in such a situation: run away. As she rushed toward the main road, Ry barely noticed a group of five men milling along one junction. Only when she heard one of them speak in a language she didn't understand did she glance back and realize they weren't locals. Decked out in dress shirts and suit trousers that were rumpled and torn, they looked dazed, terrified and hopelessly lost. Ry realized the men must be Thai embassy employees fleeing for their lives.

The prudent thing for her to do was keep running. Instead, Ry spun around and dashed back. "Stop speaking in Thai! Do you want to die?" she cautioned in Khmer. The shouts of the rioters were getting nearer. Ry knew the Thais might not find a way out before the mob reached them. In an instant, she made her decision. "Come with me," she said. In the darkness she led the men down the uneven catwalks until they reached a ladder leading to the river. Then she pointed the way through the reeds to a boat and safety. Sitting some weeks later in her one-room shack, Ry seems taken aback when asked why she stopped to assist these privileged foreign diplomats: "They needed help and they were human beings. I could not ignore them."

Cambodia is a brutally violent society, where strongmen thrive and the rest suffer. That's not surprising, given the horrors of the Khmer Rouge rule in the 1970s. A recent study by the Dutch-funded Transcultural Psychosocial Organization estimates that one-third of all Cambodians suffer post-traumatic stress disorder from the Pol Pot regime that left a quarter of the population dead. Violence erupts daily, from families settling disputes by throwing grenades to the common practice of neighborhood vigilante gangs beating accused thieves to death. The rampage that led to the wrecking of the Thai embassy and more than a dozen businesses on Jan. 29 was equally senseless and vicious—triggered by nothing more than a false rumor of an insult against Cambodia by a Thai actress. But many Cambodians have summoned the courage and humanity to rise above their past horrors.

When Yu Samoeun was 13 years old, the Khmer Rouge forced her to watch them drown her uncle for being lazy. They tied stones around his neck and to his wrists and pushed him into an irrigation canal. "I wanted to help, but I couldn't. They told me if I cried, I'd be the next one," recalls Samoeun. Twenty-seven years later, on the night the Thai embassy was attacked, she found herself hiding behind a plywood partition in her tiny wooden home when four desperate Thai women ran in, carrying their high-heeled shoes. They were shaking and couldn't speak any Khmer, but their frightened eyes pleaded for sanctuary. This time, Samoeun could help. Quickly, she hustled them behind a curtain. A few minutes later, a gang of a dozen Cambodian youths came to her door. "They asked if I had seen any Thais trying to escape," Samoeun says. "I lied and told them no." One of the Thai women took off her gold earrings and offered them as a reward. But Samoeun, who earns barely $1 a day selling candy, refused to accept them.

That night at least half a dozen squatters from the village with no name helped desperate Thai embassy officials escape—this despite the long-standing friction that has existed between the embassy and the slum. When the embassy was built in 2000, Cambodian authorities blocked off a narrow alley that the villagers had used for years. Samoeun, for example, now has to walk 20 minutes instead of five to get to the main road to buy the candy she sells to passersby. Any lingering bitterness about the embassy was put aside during the riots. "We could never think of that dispute at such a time," says Sam Piseth, 34, who fetched a ladder to help Thais climb down the embassy walls.

Since January, life has returned to normal in the squatter village behind the gutted embassy. The stench of festering garbage still fills the air, and money is as scarce as ever. But the rescuers know that for one night they made a difference. "I don't know how to stop the violence in my country," Samoeun says. "I can only do what's good myself."

Why is it that the stupid monkey in Cambodia keep claiming parts of Issan Province belong to them due to some nonsense Franco treaty?

Has anyone seen any French soldier within 1,000 km or so from Issan Province? They got to be on drug and hallucinating. They need immediate medical attention.

LOL, are you blind 8:50AM?

HUN SEN is still in control of Cambodia and you said vote for CPP.

Now you want to play this political card? Ok so here's the scenario: Perhaps you know you will gain some part of the territory coz you have
know that based on the ICJ'S VERDICT AND THE FRANCO-A SIAM BASTARD-TREATY, YOU MORON STUPID THAIS WILL NVER HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE. Or coz you base your invasion on any treaties signed by FOOLISH AND CORRUPTED POEPLE IN CAMBODIA GOVERNMENT, SO THAT'S WHY YOU ARE SO SURE TO WIN THE CASE. OR YOU WILL RELEASE THE SECRET THAT THE GOVERNMENT OF CAM DOES NOT WANT THE PUBLIC TO HEAR AS FOR YOUR WINNING TOOLS? OR TO PROVE THAT SAMAK GOVERNMENT HAS MADE WRONG DECISION WITH THE PREAH VIHEAR TEMPLE AND TOPPLE THE GOVERNMENT?

Now WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY AH THAI CHKOUT?

KHMER EMPIRE

It is a mistake on part of Cambodia not to strike the Thai invaders up to now. It shows that we are weak and helpless. Our leaders should seek help from our closest allies China and North Korea and take immediate steps to retaliate.

To LAO Tse Mong Hay, Chiang Kang

Although there are good and bad people in any country my experiences as a refugee in Thailand were very negative.

We were shamed, mocked and treated in a disgraceful manner. They continually extorted money from my family and we ultimately ended up in a refugee camp. The harrassment never stop until the day we left Thailand

The Thai's refer to Cambodian's as dark people. They say we eat aligator meat and express continual pejorative terms that they attach to individuals from my culture.

This is ludicrous since the Thai culture is built on the ancient Khmer culture. Both the Thai language, culture and customs are similar to those of Cambodia.

The Thai invasion is not to protect Thai land. The land has an existing physical border predicated on the Franco/Siamese treaty of 1907. Additionally the world court decision in 1962 recognized the temple and surrounding land as sovereign to Cambodia.

The recent Thai invasion is an imperialistic act of aggression to rob Cambodia of the temple and it's adjacent land.

What are you talking about, 10:41? Cambodia is weak and helpless. Stop pretending to be something that you are not, fool.

How to settle Preah Vihear Dispute ?
No Problem with Preah Vihear issue-- we will win-win
Because-
1. We have much more Army Generals than Thailand has( we have a lot of Generals from 1 stars to 4 Top Gold stars
2. We have more Excellencies than Thailand has
3. We have more Samdachs, Oknha, Bandits (Phd.), Prime ministers (in 1995), Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Deputy Prime Ministers, provincial Governors.... that Thailand has/ or than other counties world wide...
4. We have a lot of Military equipment such as Military trucks which are used to Transport illegal Loggings and Military Vehicles used countrywide to anywhere such as to restaurants and Bars...... We have a lot of Guns/pistols which are used every day in the cities and county sides to fire on people in ladies affairs disputes.
5. We have much more Luxury Cars-Lexus Landcruisers with Army & Police Plate Numbers that represent Our Top Generals and Excellency countrywide.....

6. The best way to settle such a problem is to send some hundreds of Cambodian Generals to the Disputed Borders.....Thais will be afraid of our numerous Multi-Generals which increase from day to day.

7. Send the so-called Development Army (the main Army troop playing Roles in Land dispute in Kampong Speu to Preah Vihear... they have experiences in illegally Occupying people's Land ... now let them to occupy our Preah Vihear.

8. But is the National Embarrassment that our Army (Royal Cambodian Armed Forces) have used a lot of forces to fight with Local unarmed-Cambodians in Land grabbling... so our Armed forces (Army, Police Economy Police, and military Police-PM) may be too weakened now...

9. It is a National Embarrassment that most of our Generals just attack in the Cities and with Local Cambodians in Land disputes, small Disputes in Night Clubs, Traffic Accidents, Karaoke and any unnecessary Fire shots.

Note: when I saw the Cambodians army in Dispute with Thai Army ..It reminds me about the Royal Cambodian Army disputing with Unarmed People in Land Disputes in Cambodia; They can protect their land But for Preah Vihear how will it be going on....?
"Thai uses the same Trick as Cambodia uses in Land dispute with Local Khmer People-- as of when the empowered men deploy army to illegally occupy people's land... ".

From Excellency Phd. Bandit, General 7 Diamond Stars, Oknha Achar Knoy

Dear all,

Let's not fighting with each other, khmer and khmer. This is the time that we should together as one. Let's focus on helping our troop who are protecting our land at the border around the country. We should ask ourselves, are we contributing enough to our heros who stand along the border to protect our motherland from all invaders... Are we doing enough to keep those hero healthy? are we providing enough food for them? Are we providing them enough weapons and moral and psychological support to face with invader's psychological warfare? Let's be as one... One khmer, one nation and one spirit!!!!

Dear Louk Pou Lao Mong Hay,

It´s been along time that we haven´t met. I am thankful for your advice, but I do hold with my stance because what I wrote is not about the "internal politics" but about the "inter-state politics".
