Vendors and residents near Preah Vihear temple were fleeing the area Thursday as a standoff between Cambodian and Thai soldiers entered its third day, witnesses said, adding that more troops from both sides have been deployed to the disputed border area.

"People are leaving the area because they are scared," said Keo Vannak, a resident of Sa Em town near the base of the mountain on which the 11th-century ruins sit.

Sa Em has seen an influx of people coming off the mountain on trucks piled with their belongings, Keo Vannak said Thursday.

"I'm worried there will be a clash and it will destroy all of my belongings," said vendor Chim Nang. "I'm moving my stuff to another village for safety," he added, standing near a truck packed with household goods.

“Now I move my material to another village for safety because I’m worried there will be a clash and it will destroy all my belongings.” He had his most important household items packed with him in the truck.

Added Srey Leap, who works at Preah Vihear temple: "I will return to my hometown in Siem Reap province ... I cannot work here until there is security and this dispute is over.”

More than 600 heavily armed Cambodian soldiers have been deployed to the temple since Tuesday, when Thai troops first allegedly crossed the border following the arrest of three Thai demonstrators who jumped an international checkpoint to enter the temple.

Cambodia claims that at least 400 Thai soldiers continue to occupy Cambodian territory, while Bangkok insists that they are stationed on the Thai side of the border to conduct demining operations.

An area of 4.8 square kilometers around the temple remains in dispute after the World Court ruled in 1962 that Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia. The temple was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 7 after years of resistance from Bangkok to the inscription, further inflaming Thai nationalism.

On July 10, Thai Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama stepped down after the Constitutional Court ruled that he had acted illegally in signing an agreement supporting Cambodia’s bid to have Preah Vihear temple listed as a World Heritage Site without the permission of parliament.

Cambodian officials on Wednesday called for calm as tensions along the border escalated with the Thais's refusal to withdraw, but military officers on the ground say that more troops could be deployed to counter Thai reinforcements.

We sent more soldiers to the temple yesterday to stop the Thai troops from moving even further into the temple complex," said Kem Oun, deputy commander of RCAF Brigade 43, which was brought in as the crisis grew.

"Now, they are on our land, in our pagoda and violating our sovereignty, even after the threats of Cambodian soldiers," he told the Post on Thursday. "But our orders are to be patient and avoid fighting unless they start it first," he said, adding that Thai military officers had asked the Cambodians to meet with them later Thursday.

Thai soldiers have gathered at a Buddhist pagoda built on a slope about 200 meters from the temple, and slept Wednesday night next to Cambodian troopers, said Him Chan, deputy commander of the border police battalion 795.

They are occupying our land and last night they slept just a few meters away from us to show their aggression and provoke trouble," he said. "We’ve tried to push them away but they won't leave.... This is Cambodian land."

Cambodian officials have agreed to hold crisis talks with their Thai counterparts on Monday in a bid to defuse the standoff, but soldiers on the mountain say they remain at the ready if the situation worsens.

"I haven't used it in 10 years and it's gotten a bit rusty," said Srun Mao, soldier with Brigade 795, tapping his AK-47 rifle. "But I'm ready and I'm thirsty," the former Khmer Rouge fighter added.

Brother Chineses, please provide us more modern weapons, preferably air-to-surface missiles to combat the enemy combatant. More importantly, we can assure you, brother, that your assets with us will be secure, but this time we need your military assistance.

Thanks in advance.

Brother, thanks for your bravity. We're certain that you'll make our our country and ancestor proud.

The Cambodian Royal army and Khmer Rouge should be united to protect our sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Also, we're certain that the Thai will never forget our bitter medicine in which we just to administer to them.

May the Lord Buddha bless you all!

Everybody, Please cool down!!! Both side will not gain anything if there is a fighting. Let the laws and diplomacy take care this issue. Don't let a small group of retarded protesters fool both sides.

I, Khmer ultra-nationalist, would like to humbly and respectfully refute the Cambodian Royal army Brig. General's comment on the Thai soldiers that have more modern weapons, but we're (Cambodian) on the hilltop.

With all due respect, sir (Gen.), the former Khmer Rouge (during the Khmer Rouge era)only needed rubber-black sandles, hammock, and a AK-47riffle (or B-40 rocket launchers) will do the job just fine. Also, remember that we are fighting with the Thai soldiers with modern weapons with conventional soldiers. In fact, we have every advantage to defeat these egregious historic archfoes out of our sovereignty; it is our sovereign right to do so. More importantly, after the war (if hell broke out loose)we'll have the U.N. and the international community blessing. Or perhaps, better yet, our brother Burma will lend us a hand.

May the Lord Buddha bless Cambodia and our soldiers!

Among its neighboring, Siam considered as the luckiest country since it has never been under colonization of any countries which is unlike Cambodia, Vietnam & Laos. Because of that, Siam who changed its name to Thailand in 1939 has been able to develop the country quite better than some of its neighbors including Cambodia. However following the recent issues of Khmer Preah Vihear temples shows us that there are a lot of number of Thai people who are STILL ignorant and uneducated. It means that all their activities in invasion to Cambodia ARE NOT TACTFUL or with PROPER PLAN.

What the Siameses are doing like nowadays is like a face-to-face enemy. Therefore they are not so serious threat to our country. But what we should be cautious is:

Satrov mok pi mok, ngeay srol kapear. Ke khlach ter satrov mok pi kroy and that is the Vietnameses.

The issues of Preah Vihea and its adjacent land is not difficult for us since we have all evidences to claim what belongs to us (Siam-France 1904 & 1907 & ICJ 1962). Any agreements Hun Xen government going to talk with the Siameses on the next Monday have to be based on those facts.

United all Khmers, it is too late to provoke the war with the Siam since we are the nation of dignity. Let’s the world punish them according to the international laws if they dare to do any stupid things on us. Avoid the war if we can; every life of our people is valuable and I feel upset with the silence of Hunxen government in reaction to news of shot to death on our people by Thai army when they are trying to cross the border.

Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal Chalit Phukbhasuk said Thursday Royal Thai Air Force aircraft are on standby, prepared to fly out Thai nationals living in Cambodia if tensions flare over the disputed Thai-Cambodian border at the ancient Preah Vihear temple.

Meanwhile, over a hundred carloads of People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) activists attempting to demonstrate at the controversial temple early Thursday were prevented by police and military personnel from traveling to the site, being stopped outside the perimetre established some 10 kilometres from the site.

"If the situation worsens, the Air Force can assist on a 24-hour basis and can lift out Thai nationals to repatriate them within one hour. Officials are now well prepared for the operation," ACM Chalit said.

He said concerned Thai security officials -- including Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej who also serves as defence minister, military commanders, the supreme commander and the permanent secretary for defence -- have conducted an ongoing discussion on ways to defuse the tensions.

Referring to a plan by members and supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), an anti-government group, to protest at Preah Vihear on Thursday, ACM Chalit said that the people have the right to express their opinions but they "must be based on the truth" and that protesters must strictly follow orders issued by officials.

He said the PAD members and supporters, however, should refrain from intruding into the disputed area because it is dangerous.

ACM Chalit's remarks were made following reports that both Thailand and Cambodia had reinforced their troops at and near the competing claims to the approaches to the historic Preah Vihear temple, listed by UNESCO earlier this month as a World Heritage Site.

Both countries historically laid claim to the 11th century temple, which now sits on Cambodian soil following the action of the International Court of Justice which awarded the ancient temple to Cambodia in 1962. However, the temple can practicably only be accessed from Thailand.

However, the exact demarcation of the border around the ruins remains in contention.

The security situation around the temple deteriorated after three Thais, including a Buddhist monk, were briefly detained by Cambodian soldiers after surrepticiously crossing into the disputed border area on Tuesday. The trio were released the same day but refused to leave the 4.6 square kilometre disputed area adjoining the temple complex.

Thailand first issued a warning that travel to the vicinity of the temple be avoided, but later closed off access altogether within 10 kilometres of the temple.

Meanwhile, Si Sa Ket's provincial governor closed a nearby park on Wednesday, citing security concerns.

The park is expected to be reopened when tensions ease. (TNA)

Thai soldiers are only good for shooting people who have their hands tied behind their backs. The Khmers have been through more wars than a Thai who whores to the foreigners. If this war does start, the international community knows that it is the Thai who ignited it. They sent troops into our country and we are just defending it.

Courage brave khmer soldiers. We have shown the world we are not a violent and greedy nation. We are willing to negotiate even though they occupy our land.
but patince has a limit.
Cambodian sovereignty is non negotiable. Let the thai thieves know that.

I visited the temple once.
One thing I am sure of is that the stairs to the temple is in Thai territory, not Cambodia.

So I wondered if Thailand closes her border, the tourists cannot get into the temple because the stairs to the temple is in Thai territory.

I also wondered why UNESCO awared Cambodia the temple if Thailand and Cambodia still have a disagreement on the overlapping or not area.

The sure thing is the staris is in Thai soil.

How can Cambodia develop or preserve the temple if they don't have a way to reach the temple?

Will you climb from the Cliff to the temple? Is it cost effective for a tourist to fly to the temple?

Can anyone from Cambodia give me some lights?

"I haven't used it in 10 years and it's gotten a bit rusty.....But I'm ready and I'm thirsty,"

That is the greatest thing I've ever heard. Khmer people are bred to fight, we are warriors and through all the wars and suffering we've been through it makes us even stronger. Im surprised we're not already extinct. We fight like men while the Thai's and the Vietnamese fight like bitches. Look at how the Thai's are trying to provoke us, thats not a warrior thats a bunch of punks looking for a fight that they can't win. And look at the Vietnamese they always try to talk nice to our face and we fall for it but behind our backs they stab us and replace us with their own kind.

You still dont get it do you. Blinded by your stupidity.THE 4,6 SQ KM IS KMER TERRITORY SANCTIONED BY THE ICJ WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.

If you want to play the stupid game then we will cut off all access from thai side which is OUTSIDE that perimeter.

We can build cable cars infrastructure up to the temple, roads from Khmer cities. Hotel and leisure activities like golf etc all on the cambodian side.A new airport. International investors are just waiting for the opportunity to come and invest.

All you thais have left is looking at us with binnoculars, pooer for being so greedy and dumb.

Then you can build your stairs to heaven. Maybe you can sell a visit to God for the tourists.

We wont use a single thai material to build this infrastructure.

YOU THAIS ARE DUMB DUMB ANG GROWING DUMBER BY THE MINUTE!

Have you ever heard of monuments on a hill top. There dozens of that world heritage sites around the world.
Take for example the mont st michel in france.

The access is by winding road that leads up to the church.

Dotted with museums and restaurants. It all adds to the adventure and glamor to the site.

Roads, rail and arlines will converge on Angkor wat and Preah Vihear.
Going up in cable cars will add an extra thrill to the visit.

Isdipensable thais? Let me laugh. We dont need your roads and buses. We got our own and more.

What can you thais offer. A stairway to heaven by led zeppelin?

I've read the history of Prasat Preah Vihear and stated that during the peak of Khmer empire our lands was way inside Thailand and the border of Khmer was with Burma. Some retarded people still wondering that if the stair way is facing to the Thai and they consider that temple is belong to Thai. What a shame? Much of Thailand today was once belong to the Cambodian.

The reason Thai being ignorant was that the history is being twisted by their own historians.

Khmer will win with proofs and evidences and especially from regional and international support.

Believe me the Thai will look so shameful to the world.

We should present to the regional and international about our more than 10 provinces in Thailand and our Prasat (Temples) that we would like to reclaim them back.

We have the proofs and evidences and plus our people still live there.

Adds Thai PM, updates protest)

By Nopporn Wong-Anan

KANTARALAK, Thailand, July 17 (Reuters) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Thursday a border row with Thailand was "worsening" and urged the immediate withdrawal of Thai troops from a disputed ancient temple.

In a letter to Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, Hun Sen said the stand-off at the Preah Vihear temple was "very bad" for relations, but he still hoped to "resolve the problem through negotiations" at a border meeting on Monday.

"The situation is worsening due to a continuing increase in the numbers of Thai military" and the presence of Thai protesters, said Hun Sen, a former Khmer Rouge commander who faces a general election next week.

With hundreds of Thai and Cambodian troops facing off on the border, there are fears it could escalate five years after a dispute over another Cambodian temple, Angkor Wat, saw a nationalist mob torch the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh.

Cambodia's listing of the temple as a World Heritage site triggered a political uproar in Thailand stoked by groups seeking to oust Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's shaky ruling coalition.

About 2,000 Thai nationalists were stopped from rallying at the temple on Thursday, some clashing with Thai villagers angry at the loss of cross-border trade. Some protesters suffered minor injuries before riot police intervened.

"Go home, go home, you troublemakers!," one woman shouted at members of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), which is leading a nearly 2-month old street campaign against Samak, whom they accuse of being a proxy for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 coup.

In Bangkok, Samak said the protesters were "insane" and he accused them of trying to provoke a border confrontation.

LONG-RUNNING DISPUTE

The 900-year-old temple has been a source of tension for decades since the International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that it belonged to Cambodia, a ruling that still rankles Thais.

The latest flare-up was sparked by Bangkok's support for the UNESCO listing, which the PAD said was tantamount to selling out Thailand's heritage.

Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama quit last week after a Thai court ruled the joint communique he signed backing Preah Vihear's listing was illegal because it was an international treaty that required parliament's approval.

The PAD seized on the court ruling, vowing to go after the rest of Samak's cabinet and step up a street campaign that has worried investors. The main stock index has dropped 23 percent since the protests began on May 25.

"Political temperatures will rise inexorably, and Thailand will become increasingly ungovernable, in the interim," Chulalongkorn University professor Thitinan Pongsudhirak wrote.

Thailand and Cambodia have deployed hundreds of troops since Tuesday when three Thai activists were briefly detained on the Cambodian side for trying to plant a Thai flag there.

Despite the aggressive rhetoric from both sides, the situation at the temple has remained calm while diplomatic efforts get underway.

Defence ministers from the two countries will attend a border meeting on Monday "so that both sides can discuss issues together in a spirit of neighbourliness", the Thai Foreign Ministry said. "Now, they are on our land, in our pagoda and violating our sovereignty, even after the threats of Cambodian soldiers,"
"But our orders are to be patient and avoid fighting unless they start it first," he said, adding that Thai military officers had asked the Cambodians to meet with them later Thursday."

= What is the fuck is this? AH HUN SEN soldiers has the paitent for the fucken Thaicong thuggish soldiers to violate Cambodian sovereignty? And the fucken Thaicong even dare to ask Cambodian officials to negotiate with them on the land they illegally occupied according to international law?

No...No...No! The fucken Thaicong can't negotiate on what they don't have! If these fucken Thaicong still want to negotiate and show them International map or the United Nations map of the world! This is plain and simple!

So this is the most elite Thaicong army? I tell you what and the only thing that make the fucken Thaicong so elite is their fucken uniform because their skin and bone can still be penetrated by bullets!

Cambodian soldiers need to surround them cut off their supply lines and who give a fuck about negotiation and these fucken Thaicong thuggish soldiers don't need to negotiate on Khmer land!

Fear no Thaicong and drag these fucken Thaicong into hell!

Here AH HUN SEN the animal is willing to negotiate with the Thaicong aggressor but for ordinary Cambodian people, Cambodian opposition, and Cambodian monks and he is willing to kill them in a heart beat without any negotiation to show that he is the strongman of Cambodia!

AH HUN SEN glory day is over! If the Thaicong dare fire a single shot and it will be the present from God above and AH HUN SEN can no longer protect his power! Cambodia desperately need a new war to remove AH HUN SEN regime! And it will be the same way how the Vietcong remove POL POT regime!

Cambodia need chaos and out of chaos there will be ordered but this time Cambodia won't have AH HUN SEN to order them around!

I am a Khmer living in Issan region and a Thai citizen. I do agree with those Khmers living Preah Vihear Province. I think Preah Vihear Temple belongs to people living in Preah Vihear province. No body else who does not live in Preah Vihear province has a rights on deciding the ownership of the temple. Keep in mind the Preah Vihear Province do exist. It is in northern region of Cambodia. But, Issan do not exist. Only the region does. But, mostly Loas people live there. We khmers are small numbers compare to others in the region. I hope this is clear to my brother who claims to be Khmer Issan in Issan province. You don't represent all the Khmers living here. So, stop using the name Issan.

Depend on the agreement in 1904 and 1962 under France Govt., the temple in Preah Vihear belong 100% to Cambodia. Why Thai raise this issue right now? This Idea is absolutely falsh. The people of Cambodia were suffered from war for more than 30 years and we don´t want the war at all and the Thailand knew exactly what kind of suffering caused by war. We appeal to Thailand to resolve this issue by policy. In fact, we had the war more than 30 years with worste suffering but we have best experiences for fighting from this war, so Thailand must think twice about this. If the war be errupt, all Khmer will be very quickly united because this territory belong to Khmer.I wish for two countries look find a peacefull way. God bless both side. Khmer farmer

Well, the agreement with France were made with France. No one agreed to anything with Cambodia, did they?

What about Cambodia agreement with Japan (The Thai's Allied). Shouldn't that also be binding with Cambodia.

Because right now Thailand is in pretty deep shit, and you don't even realize it.
