Despite US opposition on the Thai side, France pushed the United Nations Security Council to interfere in the Preah Vihear temple issue on the side of Cambodia.
Singapore also backed Thailand. Foreign Minister George Yeo said on Thursday it was "premature" to bring the border kerfuffle to the UN Security Council and urged more bilateral efforts between the rivals.
The Thai permanent representative to the United Nations, Don Pramudwinai reported that the Security Council wants to consider how to handle the tense military standoff between Cambodia and Thailand as the two neighbours mass more troops along their border.
The request for the emergency meeting was made by Cambodia after it claimed that Thailand had deployed large numbers of troops along Thai-Cambodian border.
French UN Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert said on Wednesday the 15-nation Council "should meet as fast as possible" based on Cambodia's request.
The dispute focuses on an area that both nations claim as their own, adjacent to Preah Vihear temple, an ancient Hindu edifice built at the height of the Khmer empire in the 11th century.
The World Court awarded the temple to Cambodia 46 years in 1962, in a decision that Thailand was reluctant to accept. Nevertheless the only practical access for visitors from either country, or from abroad, is through Thailand.
On July 8, the temple was added to the World Heritage List maintained by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
Cambodia said earlier that it hoped the UN would help broker a solution to the standoff, which has essentially existed since 1962 when Thailand was essentially forced to accept a decision. Thailand holds that the two sides can resolve the matter without an outside mediator.

AH George Yeo fails to learn to from Cambodian history in the 1980! Cambodia was invaded in 1979 by the communist Vietnam with the support of the Soviet Union! Communist Vietnam has the fourth largest army in the world and it is Cambodian people who bear the brunt of the Vietnamese invasion for 10 years and nobody understand the issue of invasion more than Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people!
AH George Yeo and his ASEAN members including the Thaicong aggressor need to stop talking by showing some action now in trying to diffuse and to contain the Thaicong-Cambodian conflict as soon as possible because more talking won't lead to nowhere and the Thaicong government chose to act in defiant of international law and order!
The memory of invasion is still fresh on Cambodian people mind and Cambodian leaders will not take any invasion lightly because Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people had been through it all! So for the Thaicong-Cambodian conflict to be solved the ASEAN must change their mindset in trying to understand how the Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people perceive the world! It is no surprise that it is Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people who are the one that want to end this conflict as soon as possible that is why Cambodian urge to the third party(UN) to get involve and ended this conflict quickly before it is getting out of hand!
The are is no point of blaming Cambodia for being a victim of Thaicong aggression or even past Vietcong aggression which led to invasion of Cambodia in 1979!
It's IMMATURE of CAMBODIA to step over ASEAN and complaint to the UN.

I think the talk in Siem Reap on Monday July 28, will lead to nothing. The Thai is playing a delay tactic because they know they have no legal base to occupy Khmer land. We should have France, a member of security council push this early complaint about Thailand violating our sovereignity go through the Security Council. Note that France was the original signer of the 1904 and 1907 border treaty with Siam that the world court in 1962 relied on as a fact for court judgement.
The French is a Nazi. Stay away from them for the safety of Cambodia.
