U.N. Tries to Ease Border Dispute

July 24, 2008

The United Nations Security Council will convene a special session to try to prevent a border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia from escalating into a military confrontation. Cambodia had appealed to the United Nations for help and diplomats said the session probably would be held next week. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, declined a Cambodian request to help resolve the dispute after Thailand objected. The conflict focuses on an area each nation claims and that is less than two square miles around the Preah Vihear temple. Its listing this month as a United Nations World Heritage Site stirred tensions in Thailand.

Cambodia was a victim of invasion before in 1979 by the communist Vietnam supported by the Soviet Union and the memory is still fresh! I just hope the UN take the Thaicong-Cambodia conflict very seriously! The UN will have nobody to blame except themselves for not containing the conflict soon enough!
