Phnom Penh - A Cambodian father murdered two of his infant daughters and badly beat his pregnant wife before killing himself after he learned she was having a fifth girl, police said Monday. Ou Em, the police chief of Siem Reap province, 300 kilometres north of the capital, said Youen Nil, a 37-year-old father of four daughters, became distraught when his wife told him their unborn fifth child was also a girl.
"He first beat the mother, who ran, and then slit the throats of his 3 and 4-year-old before killing himself," Ou Em said.
"The family was very poor and Nil was disappointed he was not having a son. Two other daughters were staying with their grandmother at the time or he would have killed them too."
The name of the wife and murdered children were not provided.
As in many cultures, in Cambodia sons are traditionally more highly valued because it is believed they can look after their parents in old age and take over the family business.
Police said Nil had "lacked an understanding of domestic violence issues and women's rights." They said the incident occurred Thursday.

I can't help but must response to your uneducated comment. You were and still are out of touch with the reality in the Cambodian game of pilitics played by CPP the CPP way. Your comment clearly proves you ignorant of the real meaning of poverty and its root cause. You may be short-sighted, or really short of insights.
SRP is not the reason that makes you poor. And voting for it is not either. In fact, you have made the right choice voting for SRP, but you need to be better educated so you'll be more informed of how and why things are the way they are now instead of the way they are supposed to be.
How sad and very cruelt for this guy to act barbarian way to his woman.
This is showing that Cambodian lacks of vision and deep thinking.

this is the case of mental illness for he committed suicide after he killed his small kids. what a low life this man is! yes, poverty seemed to play a part on this case. how common is this kind of problem in cambodia? not common at all. just an isolated incidence. still, people like this man need psychiatric intervention. it sounded like he wanted to have male children, but god only given his family girls. in cambodia, male children take on the family's name and can help with hard chore around the house like farming, orchard, fishing etc... this is why this man is frustrated and take it upon his helpless family. it is very sad for the family, of course. i hope some ngo group can help his family cope with this tragic. may god bless them all.
