The Great Wall Of Preah Vihear

Opinion by Khmerization
25th August 2008
“Cambodia, as a sovereign nation, must plan the future of Preah Vihear alone for the good and the benefits of Preah Vihear and Cambodia, regardless of whether Thailand agreeing with the ideas or not. This includes the building of a Berlin-style wall or even the Great Wall of Preah Vihear that is comparable to the Great Wall of China.”

It was said that the Great Wall of China was built more than 2200 years ago (220-200 BC) to protect China from the invasion of Xiongnu- a confederation populated by the nomadic tribes which was consisted of the Hunnic tribes, who were said to be the ancestors of the present day Mongolian people. By the same token, with the Thai making a journey eastward by pushing its borders deep inside Cambodia, in particular around the Preah Vihear and Ta Moan temple areas, Cambodia’s plans to build a Berlin-style wall is a great idea indeed.
This is the 21st century and to some fair-minded people, the idea of building a wall to shut off foreign invaders or encroachers is too extreme. But with Cambodia’s borders being chipped away on a constant basis by our neighbours, it is imperative and appropriate for Cambodia to do everything possible to protect its borders from being encroached by our greedy neighbours, including going into extreme like building a Berlin-style wall.
The gate to Preah Vihear temple from the Thai side should be shut off permanently with the Berlin-style or the Israeli-style concrete walls which were built to fence off the attacks from the Palestinian extremists. Cambodia should encourage private and foreign investors to invest heavily in the Preah Vihear areas by offering them incentives and concessions in order to develop tourist facilities.
Road-building, proposals for cable cars and hospital buildings are ideas that are very encouraging. Access to the Preah Vihear temple from the Cambodian side is essential for the developments and the growth of Preah Vihear. If Preah Vihear remains dependent on access from Thailand, Cambodia and, to a larger extent, Preah Vihear temple will always be at the mercy of Thailand.
I predict a bleak future for the solutions of the Preah Vihear and Ta Moan temples that are favourable to Cambodia. The solutions to the Preah Vihear and Ta Moan temples can only be achieved to the benefits of Thailand. With four negotiations taken place and the status quo still remain, the solutions are nowhere in sight, the situation remain as volatile as ever and the status quo remained unpredictable, the Cambodian people can only be pessimistic. With this scenario in mind, Cambodia must not be too complacent and lethargic about the Preah Vihear issue. On the contrary, Cambodia must be forceful, vigilant and pro-active by taking the initiatives, and not waiting for Thailand to make an offer.
Cambodia must be mindful and wake up to the facts that, with three negotiations that have failed to produce any outcomes so far, the Thai tactics in successfully manipulating the negotiation processes toward their advantages by hijacking the agenda of the negotiations, are aimed at prolonging the Thai occupation until such time a solution that is favourable to Thailand can be reached. So, Cambodia, as a sovereign nation, must plan the future of Preah Vihear alone for the good and the benefits of Preah Vihear and Cambodia, regardless of whether Thailand agreeing with the ideas or not. This includes the building of a Berlin-style wall or even the Great Wall of Preah Vihear that is comparable to the Great Wall of China.

Anyway I'm supporting this idea. Like he said, the Thai has been prolonging the time to get the opportunity to wage war on us. So why not? Just build the wall all the way straight down to the sea as well.

Keep the invaders at bay.

I agree. The Thai are pushing their borders deep into Cambodia every day, so we have to stop them, especially at important areas such as Preah Vihear and Ta Moan temples. In particular at Preah Vihear we must shut the Thai off of the access to the Preah Vihear temples. In future, if they want to visit Preah Vihear they must come through Cambodia. If we open the border there, the Thai might send in their soldiers again.

We want to keep what we have now. Can't let it keeps loosing every meters.

Most of the times I agree with your opinion; but for this time, I completely disagree with you. You don't need a wall to protect Preah Vihear. You need good border demarcation resulting from a fair and just resolution from both sides. Will you put up a wall along the whole border of Thailand and Cambodia? Given the poor financial conditions of the Cambodian government who always needs foreign aids which end up mostly in the pockets of those corrupted top officials of the CPP, can we afford a very costly wall? Cambodia economy depends largely on its neighbors' cooperation. Can we fence off that cooperation too?
Nationalism without realism will lead us to a very dangerous path.

Khmerization, give up already. Most of what you said are impractical, illogical, and nonsensical. You are making us look bad with your insane comments.

what's wrong with just shutting the gate from the Thai side? Just let tourist from Thai side coming into Cambodia first before they can see the temple and it's done.

No need for F*** massive wall or any bullshit as KK suggested and you advocated.

They also need to take care of the porous border at Viet side and Lao's side too. The problem is no one is taking care of Cambodia and Cambodia's properties and sovereignty.

Please be a little more open minded and comprehensive when talking about Cambodia's international policies. Thinking like you people and the Communist CPP will only lead us to crazy ideas like the Khmer rouge.

No need wall...but need a new leader of Cambodia!!!!!!

Yeah, I totally agree. Let's make wall all along the Cambo-Thai boundary line so our Cambodians cannot escape to Thai's land as refugees again if Yuon invade us.

as a khmer person, i supported the cambodian gov't's initiative to build a berlin-style wall at all "complicated border areas" as to prevent thailand from trying to steal it again from us, especially when they violated the treaty of 1907 and the icj verdict of 1962.

9:20PM+1.02PM, I think what Khmerization is advocating is not the wall for the whole borders with Thailand. As he has put in his article he is only responding to a suggestion by Kanharith of building a wall in "complicated areas". Preah Vihear is too close to the borderline. In fact it is actually located on the borderline. Thai thieves or Thai invaders can sneak in any time. This wall won't cost much and it is a price that Cambodia must be prepared to pay for the protection of Cambodian sovereignty and territorial integrity. You are right, we need good demarcation. This is one of the demarcations. And you are right, no one is protecting our borders, sovereignty and territorial integrity, so I agree with Khmerization that this is one of the way to protect Cambodian borders, not the whole borders but only in complicated areas like Ta Moan and Preah Vihear temples. This can be done on the Viet side of the borders as well. I think that it is not impractical or insane, it can be done and it is appropriate considering what the Thai have done at Preah Vihear and Ta Moan temples.

I don't know what were/are the negotiations between Cambodia and Thailand relating to the territory dispute, based on. The Thais do not recognize the lawful map used by Cambodia and of cause Cambodia will not be stupid to recognize a "land grabbing map" drawn unilaterally by Thais.
So what will be used to find the border line by the border demarcation committee?
I am not sure whether the move agreed by the Cambodian government to clear the land mines along the border area to make way for demarcation without map is good. More or less, that mines are protecting Cambodia from the invasion, it would have been Cambodian current great wall. Don't say that the Thais will be so kind to responsible for removing the land mines alone. It will be the process of removing the land mines to make their military bases inside Cambodian land.

Guys:
This is 21st century AD, wall and moath defense is obsolete like an old oxcart. If I were a Thai soldier I would laugh until I turn blue in the face.
Look at the Gorgia/South Ossetia conflict, to take over South Ossetia the Russian tank columns rolled toward the outskirt of Tsibilis the heart of Georgia!
Do you get the picture?
We have the law on our side - use it!
On the other hand a fine equipped crack unit, well-trained, well-disciplined, blended-in the background out of sight but within striking distance can act as first response.
Last but not least, all the idiots in PPenh and their family should cease jumping on the plane to go socializing, shopping, partying, golf tournaments etc.. in Bangkok, and still pretending to be so worry about the homeland.
You dim wit in PPenh need to show the world some consistency, rationale, and genuine patriotism.
