Nearly 53,000 children in China have fallen ill from milk powder contaminated by the industrial chemical melamine, the country's government has said, dramatically ramping up its previous figures.
A total of 52,857 children had been brought to hospitals after falling ill, a health ministry spokesman said.
Most had "basically recovered" but 12,892 of them remained hospitalised, he added.
The health ministry says 104 babies show serious symptoms.
Four children have died after drinking the milk made by some of China's main producers.
Earlier, Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said authorities would tighten regulations on product safety.
"What we need to do now is make sure that this sort of thing doesn't happen in the future, and that's not just dairy products," he said.
"This kind of thing must not happen with any products. We must let the common people eat properly."

Some chinese media started to protest against Western media on the milk issue.
They said there is some secret issues behind this.
Cambodia government must take a closer look at domestic consumer products and also especially from neighboring countries such Thailand and Vietnam! Some of the consumer products are written in Thai or Vietnamese language and there is no way Cambodian people can understand which can lead to misuse!
Most dirt poor Cambodian people are looking for quantity not quality and many cooking oil to gasoline are mixed to get more volume to attract consumers at a cheaper price! There is no such thing as 100% pure of anything in Cambodia unless you get it trade from Mother Nature!
What happens in China is when bad businesses put profit before human life! Please let not allow this kind of incident to happen in Cambodia!
What can you do boy 3:10PM we are DIRT POOR?
Lucky we can live to net hour! we are hungry, fool!
How can u control this type products in Srok Khmer when the richer nations weren't able to control it? Everyone is all aware that most products in Cambodia are not 100% pure, but they still buy them anyway, cuz it's the only thing they can afford. A lot of them don't even have money to buy food for themselves, nevertheless, milk for their babies.
How many people went to Vietnamese Trade Exhibition at Mondial on Sat and Sunday?
Thousand and thousand Cambodians bought low quality Vietnamese product at a high price.
Just VN underwear cost $9 while Cambodian underwear is just $0.50.
One t-shirt cost about $5 to $15 dollars, while Cambodian cost only $ 2 to $3. But Cambodian products have very fewer opportunity to pay for Mondial exhibition.
We export to Vietnam just $250 million per year, but we import from Vietnam for $ 2 billion per year.
Now wonder how Vietnam is very happy that Cambodia and Thailand are fighting with each other?
Vietnam sell at very high price now for their very low quality product.
