Correction: Sompong, not Chavilit, is the new Thai FM

Sompong, New Thai Foreign Minister

By D.Arul Rajoo

BANGKOK, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Justice Minister and veteran politician Sompong Amornwiwat is set to helm the Foreign Ministry in Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat's Cabinet.

The deputy leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) told reporters today that Somchai had asked him to be foreign minister in the new Cabinet which is awaiting royal endorsement.

Sompong, 67, one of the front-runners to replace prime minister Samak Sundaravej after he was disqualified by the Constitution Court on Sept 9, said he woul d be ready to assume the post which was last held by former diplomat Tej Bunnag.

Sompong's confirmation today also ruled out former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh as speculated by the media or former ambassador to France Saroj Chavanaviraj who was nominated by Samak to replace Tej but was left out in the cold after Samak's departure.

Thai officials said Sompong, who hailed from the northern city of Chiangmai, was favoured over other career diplomats due to the party's close link with ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

"In the previous Thaksin government until he was ousted in the 2006 coup, his party was not concerned much with the foreign ministry. But now they need a politician in control as there are lot of issues about Thaksin, his exile abroad and his red (diplomatic passport)," said a government source.

Sompong's immediate task would be to reduce the border tension with Cambodia, as well as taking charge of the country's preparation to hold the Asean Summit in December.

Somchai, a brother-in-law of Thaksin, said the Cabinet line-up had been completed, including nominees from five other parties in the coalition government.

The former judge is expected to hold the Defence Minister post as well.

The new cabinet is expected to have several new faces, including for the coveted Finance Minister post where the current deputy finance minister, Suchart Thadathamrongvech is likely to replace PPP secretary-general Surapong Suebwonglee who declined reappointment due to an ongoing court case.

Suchart is the leader of the Puea Thai, a party formed recently with the aim of absorbing members of parliament from PPP in case the party is disqualified for alleged election fraud.

Sonthi knocked down Tasksin by coup d'état.

It is still Sonthi and his lieutenants who refused to the military to apply the measures of the emergency's state asked by Samak Sundaravej what entailed his resignation because he is in
impossibility to govern.

Sonthi Boonyaratglin is used by thai king to calm the thai-Islamist rebels of the South of thailande who are in fight for their autonomy only?
Sonthi Boonyaratglin can he be used by king thai to negotiate in secret with the thai-Islamist rebels to help them to create their Islamic state on the ground of Cambodia?

The thai's demand of the borders of Cambodia today is an act spontaneous after Cambodia asked the registration of the Preah Vihear temple to the heritage of Unesco or it is a deliberate plan prepared for a long time before to take back also Sisophon, Battambang, Siemreap, given up to the French protectorate by the former Siamese sovereign and that the thailande considered never as territories lost to the advantage of Cambodia because the French protectorate is finished today?
Is this significant that it is by the only one map that Thailande draws and not recognized by no country that thailande disputes the borders with Cambodia today?

Why the thailande privileges the bilateral discussion in this dispute and not the UNO or the international court ?
Because thailande knows that its will not win with the international law in this affair.
But in a bilateral way, the thailande can win with the strength if it is necessary.

what are you thinking about all of it?

I think that the thailande tries today to settle a territorial dispute which dates several centuries and which opposed formers Siam'skings and formesr kings Khmers by taking advantage that Cambodia is still weak after civil wars and auto-genocide.

The war French -thailande of 1940 1941 began in following manner that presents similarities with what happens today .

Prime Minister of this period M. Phibun, an ultranationalist thais began by provoking nationalist thais excitements in which were transformed into demonstrations against colonial France.

Then incidents of the borders occurred between Thailande and the French Protectorate.

Then military thailandaises raids were transformed into skirmishs with the French troops.

Then thailandaises air attacks against the French’s positions.

And finally, the war.

There was no official and preliminary declaration of war of the thailande
And until the war which burst the negotiations continued between the thailande and the representatives of French Indochina..
