Ly Yong Phat, the businessman behind the major developments planned on Koh Kong, is no stranger to controversy having been criticised by several human rights agencies for forcibly removing villagers from their land in 2006.

Also known as Phat Suphapha, he is a senator in the ruling Cambodian People's Party and one of the wealthiest men in Cambodia who counts many of the country's most powerful people as his close associates.

Mr Phat came under fire from the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) for the forced eviction of 250 families in the Chi Khor Leu commune in Sre Ambel district of Koh Kong province on Sept 19, 2006.

According to the AHRC report, military police were involved in the eviction, destroying the villagers' crops and bulldozing houses. Seven people were injured in the confrontations, including two villagers who suffered bullet wounds.

The Cambodian government granted Mr Phat's Agriculture Duty Free-Shop Development Company two 10,000-hectare concessions in the commune, which the villagers had been living in since 1979, the report said.

Human Rights Watch, Global Witness, FORUM-ASIA, the Asian Human Rights Commission and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) issued a joint statement in Oct 2006 condemning the evictions.

He offered compensation of $50 per hectare when human rights lawyers were asking for a fair market value of $500-$1,000 per hectare, human rights workers later discovered.

Why Cambodian people have allowed this animal to destroy them (250 family with one man ). These 250 families should work together to chop this animal to pies-mince. Cambodian overseas

Soon? when? Can you let us in on it. I mean, so far, it has been over 30 years, and things seem to get better and better, not worse.

It takes utmost effort and time to become a real competent with conscience and value to live in dignity as an individual. Sadly and disastrously, it takes just pleasing words, lobbying skill to satisfy certain characteristics of people, say boastful, too-high self-pride and power-addicted people even with little standard work done! Too partial, too bureucracy, rampant corruption, too self-power and conflicts of interest ..etc

What a pathetic!

Only stupid Khmer overseas who are apparently out of touch with what is going on in Cambodia always have stupid mindset that Cambodia is going down while in reality it's the opposite. Khmer overseas think Cambodia is a piece of shit but when they come lurking around, they are always surprised because of their own ignorance. And when they want to sound better than everyone else, they always say stupid shits like how in America, this is better or how we do it in America. You know what? Fuck you! We don't give a shit what you do or how you do it in Australia, America, France, Canada, etc... This is Cambodia and we have our own ways of doing things. It's called cultural difference.

Khmer overseas need to stop your ignorant mindset of today's Cambodia and lose that pretentious egotistical attitude about how better you are than anyone in Camboida. You are not. You're not superior than anyone in Cambodia. Your education is nothing compared to some Khmer in Cambodia who have gone through an even higher level of schooling than you.

Your self-righteous thinking mind is your own problem, buddy.

No need to fight between Khmer inside and oversea! Because this sight now have been reviewed by Vietnamese and Thai as well.

I myself spent long time in Cambodia and studied in the West for a couple time.

So, I belong to both sides of you as inside and oversea!

Should we accept the fact that we have 6 millions poors or more than 40% while U.S. has about 15% of poor?

Some experts said that 6 millions of unhappy poor could lead to instability itself. No need to blame critics.

Khmer proverb saying that "No one understand their own mistake, but someone else mistake could be seen as big as a mountain no matter how small it is.
" Peak Chas Peak Pi Preng, Tos Kluon Eng Meul Min Yus! Tos Ki Touch Sot Sal , Romes Yul Pun Tang Phnom.

Don't compare Cambodia to the US. Two very different countries, culturally and socially. US has a shit load of list of wrongs, civil rights and so on. If I remember it right, it wasn't until the 60 with the African American movement for freedom and quality that they were able to vote. Still today in America, there is still major racism. Cambodia has its own problems just how US and any other country has its own. You are dead wrong if you think you are better than anyone else, buddy.

BTW, your so-called freedom is just an illusion. Ever heard of Patriot Act? lol do your research and see how free you really are. In the US, you CAN'T own shit, not even your house. Try not paying your property tax and you'll see who really owns it. Your ass would be evicted by the IRF before you can scream freedom lol.

As the earth speak, the stupid always speak and conflict with the stupid. Me too born as in Khmer, Chinese and Vietnamese blood, educated in Japan, most documents are read and written in English and even cultures of the world, but my soul belong to those who bore me. Yes the land of our motherland.

Blaming the government--> you are too young or not civilized yet. you must learn more about society in progress. All nations suffer from the poor blaming government, but if you have chance to stay in government you will have different sense. If God let you create a new world what should it looks like? Fair, no corruption. please give me an example of such from its existence of earth.

Those who live outside---> you must back and learn what the poor teach you. You live abroad but your existence is lower than subhuman or shortly animal if you short, not well-born body, not blond or blue eyes. You are forced by the nature of competitions of the strong and worked to death by getting the money that cant buy happiness. Sometimes you want war to happen and ugly things rather than struggling life. sometimes you blame the world and when nothing to blame you raise yourself up and curse those in Cambodia and such Mr. Hun Sen a person who news and other talked about him. It's time of your choice.

My word of advice is one must speak a different language of only suffering and happiness together. If you see those who are poor, help! if you see the rich, make business with them. Then your life will expand and getting smart. Otherwise, you will be stupid not only problem in politics but you will get things such too populated, too modernized like all capital city, too primitive as caveman.

Learning or accepting one's life is like to expand our own life of one hundred year but unfortunately man on earth is more millions of year. Everyday one must expand it to the mother earth. From rock, bacteria to making or becoming human is Godly impossible for human itself to make even though we have known DNA. But when human body to become soul, not only individual soul but soul of all is our task and duty.
