Opposition Seeks Help of Former Monarch

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy has sent a letter to former king Norodom Sihanouk requesting his help in resolving "serious problems" within and outside of the country.

The continuing border standoff over Preah Vihear temple and an impending deadlock between the ruling party and the opposition over the next administration are both damaging the country, Sam Rainsy told reporters Wednesday.

The former king's past involvement in winning Cambodian ownership of Preah Vihear temple and reputation for reconciliation were both reasons for the request, Sam Rainsy said.

Then-king Sihanouk helped devise a power-sharing deal between the Cambodian People's Party and Funcinpec following a political deadlock after the 1993 elections. He also helped negotiate a coalition between the two governments following elections in 1998 and a CPP putsch in 1997.

CPP lawmaker Cheam Yiep said Wednesday the former monarch will not resolve the problem. It was up to the government to resolve, he said.

If the Sam Rainsy and Human Rights parties do not participate, "it is up to them," he said, but the CPP would continue with the formation of a new government at a swearing-in ceremony Sept. 24.

"We have a government that is able to solve the problem, so we must have confidence in the government," he said.

One thing I never understand this idiot SRP. How can anyone goes to cpp'POOP and complain about CPP ...what do you expect from the POOP to say? well I guess SRP is so so dumB! If someone pray to his father's assassin ...what do you expect from a man like him to run the country...

He does it in respect to the man who we all call & consider him King. What would you say or call him, if he goes to some one else? A jumbo jerk? Poop or not poop, you read the article. King had experience in both fields. 1. is dealing with the conflict that our country men have with each other. 2. with foreigner and you know..who went to court and got Preah Vihear for Khmer? or don't you? Thanks God King still have his breath left to talk to SRP and let's hope so that his advise will be best. Let's keep our former King important and forget about who killed who.

SRP is dump!!! Leave the retired King alone. Retire means " no involvement." Go to the current King who has constitutional obligation to address such issue.

Or better yet, don't waste your time.

The margin of victory for CPP is way too large to make any difference.

Try to work with all of the opposition parties next time. I means unite before the election not after the election.

Good luck and thank you for loving your country.

The former king is the only sole survivor of the past politicians,e.g, Ho, Mao and Stalin.

China and North Korea considerably heed what the former king has to say, because the former king is a person with 60-some-year experience with politics.

Look at what what happen to China and North Korea; the former king is the principal advisor to these countries.

What do you mean no involvement? Oh, yeah, the former king has aplenty of involvement.

Our August retired King Sihanouk is our four aces we can use to get the Thais out of our territory. It's up to our government to use these aces.

When facing such an aggression, a wise government would moblise all the nation's resources available to respulse it.

Perhaps Sam Rainsy is right in calling for help from our Auguast retired King.

In South Africa, the white regime had to succumb to its prisoner, Nelson Mandela, to put an end to a protracted war.

I think SRP is too polite to give the former King the most prestigeous Honour Responsibility for his remaining life in dealing with Cambodian territory disputes with our neighour. But I doubt that our Ex-king will dare to take this responsibilty without asking opinion from Hun Sen. His former association with Pol Pot has given him a lifetime problem. If Hun Sen is not happy, our former king will not dare to make any voice otherwise, his son will be kicked our from the trone by CPP. Areak Prey Prey

What are this people doing? Kick and curse when see no advantage from the former king and when need his help just can remember about his achievements.
Before the election, they curse and blame each other publicly but after becoming loser, just come to unite. These acts just make people think that these people do not do anything base on their conscience but base on the occasional interest.
Honestly saying, I could understand why Khmer people vote for a corrupt government. At least this government can secure a development (even little) and stability, it is better than vote for a flip flop policy party(ies). I pray that the right man will appear soon for being a Khmer leader.

Gambling, prostitutions and lands grabbing.
