[Editor's note: With two fractured royalist parties coming out of the national election, Prince Sisowath Thomico, a cousin of King Norodom Sihamoni, says he has a plan to revive the royal name. With Norodom Ranariddh running his self-named party from exile, and Funcinpec winning only two seats in July's election, Prince Thomico has announced he wants to established a unifying party. He sat for an interview with VOA Khmer at his cabinet office at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh.]

Q. You have a plan to set up a new political party, following the formation of a new government later this month. What is the main purpose of this party?

A. I have a plan to find a way not to disqualify the voice of the royalists. And I must set up a new party, but it is not clear how I can set up the new party.

Q. How will you set up the new party?

A. I want to remind people of the royalist stance. Currently, the principle of the royalists is not interpreted clearly. That's why the voice of royalists has been disqualified and there is disunity among the royalists. Because there is no clear ideology, no clear theory, no clear principle, and no clear stance. Right now the royalist side has only individual principles, individual theories, and individual stances.

Q. You set up the Sangkum Jatiniyum Front Party in 2006, but later you gave up on the party and joined the Norodom Ranariddh Party, and then Funcinpec. Why do you want a new party?

A. Because now Funcinpec and the Norodom Ranariddh Party have weakened, endangering the Cambodian royal family in politics. I recognize my political process failed in unifying the royalists. I also recognize I lost to [NRP Secretary-General] You Hockry and [Funcinpec Secretary-General] Nhiek Bunchhay, who are the leaders disunifying the royalists. I cannot let the royalists lose. I must find a way to put value to the royal family and royalists once again.

Q. How will your planned party help promote the honor and prestige of the royal family and the royalists in the Cambodian political arena?

A. When the Khmer royal family becomes the national symbol, especially in the political sense, and when the royal family serves the king to protect the national culture and works hard to show the big national problem. I hope to do so. I hope and believe all walks of Khmer citizens can unify together to protect the border, sovereignty and culture. My stance is that the royal family and the royalists can join in unity under the king and the government to show the national problem.

unity is a good thing, and a leader who advocate unity will be a good leader for cambodia. (leader could be anyone, not just someone from the royal linage or what have you. nowadays, education is more important than leadership by privilege and linage which is not cambodia need anymore. cambodia looks for good, well-educated leader for our country, not by privileges. god bless cambodia.

Have any idea who's behind this political motivation? My humble guess is from a BIG man in Beijing. This prince is a gong for the loyalist propaganda. He's a by-product politician. The loyal family popularity in Cambodia is gradually diminished. We, Khmer, have enough of pains and betrayals from the them. Khmer needs leadership change, now and fast before too late.Or is it!!!

Hello Mr. Thomico,

Would you please try to find other hobby to do i.e. charity, Humane socieity, civil service..., I know under the Cambodian constitution any one can creat a political party, but it's seem to me that you don't really serious about anything! Do you have a goal in your life Mr. Thomico?

Who is going to trust your party? Whether you are going to close it overnight or the next day?

Mr. Thomico, Pls try to understand Cambodia does not need another Party. Cambodia needs strenght, rebuild, morales, unity, education, and protection from agressive neighbors. You can achieve this goals without creating any Party at all, well if you smart enough.

I love you all Khmers and you
Mr. Thomico,

Regards,
KhmerNY

Royalists need to work harder and stay closer to Cambodian poor people.

Please don't be afraid of difficulty and get out of the aircon room.

Anyway, we are republicans no need to curse them too much. Otherwise, they will only have one choice is to subordinate the CPP even though CPP is really the one that abuse the Royalists.

6 millions of The poor here need more and more help.

It's so hard to help the poor. They often live in poor environment, poor education....sick and problems all the time.

It is better to have a new royalist party in 2013 than to have a new Cambodian Islamist 's party that presents candidates in 2013.

In China, in Vietnam, in Birmanie, this hypothesis is not feasible but in Cambodia and in thailande with the sick democracy , this hypothesis does his way.

The Cambodian Moslems in the first time ask only to practice their religion, do the trips to the Mecca, next these Moslems under the guide of the immams that come from their studies in the Arabic countries become politicized and taking advantage human rights and democracy present candidates to the elections, then ask their political autonomy otherwise this is the Jihad!

This is the new challenge politics of tomorrow for Cambodia!

Who knows if the Cambodian Moslems today are sunnites or Chiites?

Politic is not always Mikey mouse or Waldisnay!

Politics is not the wonderful world of walt disney.

And to do politics is not always for to have the strength, wealth, and the women.
To do the politics , is also to anticipate the risks, perils and other threats for better to manage them when they arrive. The failure of the politicians originate often on the fact that they do the politics to have the strength, wealth, and the women, of their mediocrity and of their inability to anticipate the risks that will weigh on their environment.

The political crisis thailandaise with this sick democracy, the violations of the territory khmer by the thais's troops and his current locking indicate the lack of anticipation by our khmer politicians.

Which does the prince Thomico is called political creativity. This is a good initiative in politics. Creativity and inventiveness, the innovation are alone means for not to stay sclerosed.
