Opposition leader Sam Rainsy said Thursday his lawmakers-elect would continue to boycott the formation of a new government, in the face of a verbal attack by Prime Minister Hun Sen that hinted at attacking the opposition's parliamentary immunity.
National Assembly lawmakers-elect are less than a week away from swearing in a new government, but elected lawmakers of the Sam Rainsy and Human Rights parties have said they will not attend the Sept. 24 event.
"I'm maintaining my position to boycott the swearing-in ceremony, even if Prime Minister Hun Sen threatens to take legal action against me," Sam Rainsy said Thursday. "I maintain my position against the unfair election and the lack of solution to my election complaints."
Hun Sen said in a public speech Wednesday the National Assembly had been "insulted," by being called "yuon," a racial slur for the Vietnamese, an Assembly of "ghosts," and an institution of "thieves." He was referring to a Radio France International interview with Sam Rainsy.
"If we take legal action against Sam Rainsy, we can easily strip his National Assembly immunity," Hun Sen said, during a graduation ceremony at Pannasastra University.
Sam Rainsy said in the RFI interview that the National Assembly lawmakers for the Cambodian People's Party had been elected by illegitimate or non-existent "ghost" voters.
Sam Rainsy told VOA Khmer Thursday the remarks by Hun Sen were intended to "shut up" and censure the freedom of expression and criticism of the opposition.
"I am not afraid of Hun Sen's threats," he said. "I have been getting such threats from the country's leaders for 15 years. I'm not afraid, and I'm not stopping the activities of the opposition, and the remarks of Prime Minister Hun Sen are baseless."
Human Rights Party spokesman Yem Ponhearith on Thursday said the remarks by Hun Sen were detrimental to free speech.
"The criticism during the election campaign did not constitute an insult," he said. "If Hun Sen takes action against Sam Rainsy, I believe our democracy is not enough and this will affect democrats in their expression."
Lao Monghay, a researcher for the Asian Human Rights Commission, said Thursday the remarks were not a good sign for Cambodia.
"The two sides should make a good compromise with each other," he said. "If Hun Sen complains to the court, the court has been criticized as being under the power of the government and Hun Sen."

No Swearing-in on the set date, no work, period!
I cannot see Hun Sen can remove immunity of the newly elected members of parliament. If he does, Cambodia will once again isolate itself from the world communities for breaking their own laws and human right. Areak Prey
I dare ah kvak to do it. He's above the law since birth.
Hun Sen has never learnt his lesson. He must understood that all criminals of all over the world cannot escape their crimes at the end of their lives. Most khmer rouge leaders have died with their own crimes. THerefore Hun Sen will not escape his crimes at all. THe more he has committed, the more messes he will be at his life. He should now start to discontinue his criminal activities against his people so that he can enjoy the rest of his life with his family. What the Buddha has said will not be wasted.
Cambdian People should remember 3 important events:
- Go to Prey Maki (Khmers killed Khmer)
- People left Phnom Penh (A hero used to be a top leader from 1975-mid 1976)
- Final decision to have two Prime Ministers in 1993
A current Hero is a traitor, he betrayed his people and nation.
The real history tell us.
Sam Rainsy is always crying his mother !
I will never accept to play a tennis game with this guy ! Too afraid of his reaction after loosing the game ! He will most likely tell the entire world he was cheated ! Hahaha...

Thank Mr.Rainsy you are the man of the year2008.
9:41, the referee has the last saying. If you don't like him, you have to demand a difference referee before the match, not after. That is how the world function.
What is Ah Scam Rainxy doing in Cambodia? He wasn't here when the Khmer Rouge brutally abused Khmer people?
Shut the fuck up, Ah Mai Chhoul Prey Phnom son-of-bitches!
This comments are used only by extremist who despise the country institutions.
Sam rainsy, like many politicians cambodians to the country exploits the democracy and the human rights to take power. In reality, sam rainsy has only contempt for the democracy and the human rights.
Sam rainsy contempts the new national assembly, it is necessary to reserve the same treatment of contempt to sam rainsy in the new national assembly.
Sam rainsy must deserve a special treatment adapted to his special case. All the rights and attached privileges to the functions of representative will not be recognized to sam rainsy in the new national assembly if he does not present his public apology and if he does not take oath at the same day with the other representatives.
And it is necessary to finish with the culture’s impunity.
Sam Raincy is a good leader.
11:34 AM who are you kidding? Who can you complain to? NEC, Constitutional Council, the Army, the Navy, the Police, most public servants if not all are CPP, the court, blanket coverage on TV and radio by the CPP ie media control by CPP…etc…you name it…..they all belong to the CPP, it's easy for you to say because you are one of the CPP supporter, just put yourself in the oppositions' situation then you'll know how fuck up Cambodia institutions are. Or think of the reverse situation, how would you feel? Is it a fair game?
If sam rainsy does not present its public apology , he penally will be followed. If sam rainsy does not take the oath at same day that the other representatives,he disciplinarily will be punished and the rights and privileges of the representatives will not be recognized to sam rainsy in the new national assembly.
If the other of the opposition's representatives do not take the oath at same day with the other representatives, they disciplinarily will be punished and will be deprived of their salaries and other reserved advantages to the representatives.
The people elects the representatives and not the louts!
well there's always go back to Texas!
ah Kwack fuck up!
hahahhaha if A kvuck mentally crazy You wanted me to swear and work with him? I prefer to go and ask the others country that has the ability to back me up and fight with ah Kvuck to get the righteousnesses.
Hahahahha hmmmmmmmmmm Pad Thai? oh delicious
Dear Sadam Hus Sen, My advise to you is that you need to know the limit of your power. It's reminded me your close friend with the U.S just like your twin brother Sadam Hussen did in the past with the U.S. The U.S is only side with you if you do the right thing respect other just like you want to be respected. If you ever cross the line, your fade in the future would be like your brother.
I hope you pay attention to my friendly advice.
Ah Scam Rainxy is in the wrong country. He doesn't belong here. He did not liberated Khmer people from the Khmer Rouge brutal abuse. He did not do anything but to cause more sufferings and deads to Khmer people (including 12 and 13 years old children) in Cambodia.
Ah Scam Rainxy must be deported back to Zimbabwe to save Khmer people.
